Steers to £1370 Heifers to £1225

The post-Easter high trading levels were generally maintained for another good entry of store and finishing cattle with outliers and best conformation types noticeably selling at premium levels to another packed ring of buyers.

Once again cattle from Robert & Janet Legg, Dunchideock topped the market with a pair of 24m Simmental steers that realised £1370. Other front running steers saw 25m outlying Charolais bullocks from Graham Tancock of Broadclyst to £1290, 22m South Devon steers from David & Mary Stark of to £1270 (x2) and £1235 (x2). 21m British Blues to £1240 (x2) from John & Jenny Squire of with others from the same consignors to £1170 (x3). 24m Charolais steers to £1215 and £1125 (x3) from the Palk brothers of Collaton St Mary, while Phil & Peggy Keast of sold 19m Charolais to £1210 and 23m Limousin’s to £1205. A super run of twenty smart 17-18m Limousin steers from Messrs Govier & Son of sold in matching groups at £1160, £1115, £1065 and £1045. A further run of seventeen Limousin bullocks all in the 20-23 month age bracket from Rob Davies of Diptford sold in bunches to £1090, £1070 and £1060. 23m South Devon’s to £1135 for Richard Weekes of and £1125 for a group of four 20m South Devon’s from the Cuming brothers of Moretonhampstead. 18m Aberdeen Angus from Michael Wonnacott of to £1120 (x4) and £1060 (x4). Yearling continental steers looking a good price with Charolais to £1050 for Andrew Hawkey of Wadebridge and Simmentals to £1020 (x4) for Jeremy Brown of . Strong Friesians 26m to £895 for from David Withers of . Top female on the day was a shapely 25m British Blue from PM & JE Kitto, Widegates at £1225 with others of the same breed to £1130 also David & Michelle Wootton of saw 18m sorts to £995. 24m Simmental heifers to £1100 (x4) from R Simpson of with Yearlings of the same breed to £815 for Jeremy Brown. Best Limousin’s to £1040 for David & Michelle Wootton and 21m to £1000 (x3) for Crispin Harvey of Moretonhampstead. 24m South Devon’s to £1100 for Clive Timms of , also £1010 for John Reddaway & Son of Newton Abbot.

Steers to £900 Heifers to £850

A tremendous entry of over 250 youngstock once again met a strong trade for all types on offer despite a few faces missing. Best steers saw the finest of a cracking run of Charolais bred cattle from David Skelley Snr of rise to £900 (10m) with steers of a similar age to £850 and a bunch of five (averaging 8m) to £840. Eye catching Blonde & Charolais steers (9m) from Andrew Johns of Newton Abbot hit an impressive £880 followed by his pair of smart heifers with the same comments which saw £800 apiece. Michael Scott, always brings some smart sorts and didn’t disappoint with a pen of four nicely muscled Blonde bullocks (9m) reaching a notable £865 a head and a couple of quality heifers of the same age and breed to £775. Yearling Charolais steers off the high ground of from Phil Hutchings rose to £795 for a group of four whilst five heifers of that breed (10m) fetched £670 for Phil, also his trio of Angus steers (10m) made £680 apiece. A decent run of young calves from SR & SM Crocker of Lewdown sold well and to £750 for a pair of Charolais steers at just 7m as Simmentals steers (8m) off the same farm reached £740, close behind was a mixed lot of Simmental and Hereford bullocks from Debbie Twigg & Matt Selley of Ottery which attained £735. The heifer section was headed by Peter Heard of Okehampton who saw groups of very well bred and turned out Limousin females (8-11m) to £850 whilst slightly older sorts of that breed sold to £740 for Mark Martyn of Boyton and £710 for Martin Daw up from . A run of late 2016 born Simmental calves from John Hill of Clyst sold readily and to £705 for steers (5m) with his heifers (4m) to a decent £560 for a trio. A massive entry of Dairy sold to a decent trade throughout a nd attracted buyers from all over the South West. Once again Crossbreds and strong Friesian types prove to be popular at Exeter, there were no outstanding cows or heifers forward to achieve high prices but top of the day was £1580 for a smart British Friesian second calver from Ken & Cathie Cottey of Whimple. A strong Fleckvieh heifer yielding 38Kgs for Andy & Olly Reed of Cullompton who also sold a Norwegain Red heifer to an exceptional trade at £1400. Holstein heifers sold to £1550 & £1500 for GCB Davis of Tiverton and British Friesian heifers to £1320 & £1300 for David & Sherrie Turner of Torrington. The final consignment of 45 crossbred cows from Butler Farms of Dorset sold to a strong trade topping at £1450 for a Swedish Red third calver with Jersey crosses to £1280 x 3 and £1200. David Mortimer sold the first consignment of all year round calving cows to disperse his herd and topped at £1280 for a British Friesain second calver which had calved back in January and others sold to £1200 for a second calver due in September. The South West Ayrshire Sale saw a small number of in milk cows which topped at £1220 for Messrs AL & PA Cooke of Honiton with “Bremimi Elegant Damson” a second calver by Haresfoot Elegant due in October. The same vendor sold another December calver cow at £1150 whilst a fresh heifer by Palmyra Calimero Blackjack from Courtenay Walters “Lyner” herd sold at £1150. Also from the Lyner prefix was the top priced in-calf heifer at £1200 for a daughter of Palmyra Reality Brazil from the Fairystory Family due in Septmeber with others from the same home at £1100. Other Autumn calving Ayrshire sold to £980 for Mr NLJ Trevethan of Truro. Ayrshire bulling heifers sold to £720 (x2) from Courtenay Walters who also sold a smart bull by Ayr-Phoe Ideostar at £1100. Jersey x in-calf heifers topped £1180 for Messrs Hart of the Isle of Wight who also sold Holstein heifers to £1150 (x3), £1120 & £1100 (x3). Organic served heifers sold well to a top of £980 (x2), £880 (x2) & £850 (x2) for Christopher Carr & Family of Cheriton Fitzpaine. Smart nine month old yearling heifers sold to £620 (x3) for Messrs Gibbins Agriculture of whilst Grazing type Bulling heifers sold well to £600 for a smart group of five Norwegian Red heifers heifers from Messrs Lynch Farms Ltd of Thorverton whose consignment of 28 averaged just shy of £500. The sale commenced with a massive entry of 120 heifer calves which saw a packed crowd looking to source calves and three smart Holstein Friesian heifer calves from Gibbins Agriculture sold at £310 apiece. Three beautiful Roan Dairy Shorthorn calves sold to a tremendous trade at £280 apiece for GCB Davis who also sold three Holsteins at £240 apiece. A large consignment of 80 grazing type heifer calves from Messrs Butler farms sold to a flying trade with the best Black & Whites to £280 a piece with the crossbreds selling between £140-£180 and they averaged £187.

A quieter day in the sheep pens with only 27 orphans selling to a top of £26 for a pair from Michael Ayre of Thorverton, £24 for a Jacob from Kerry Morish of Bratton and £21 (x3) for well looked after sorts from Lyn Loosemore of . Plenty of others from £14 to £18 and nothing less than £11 to average £16.04.

Only 248 store hoggs were headed by a fantastic run up from Paul Turner of Camborne who sold forward sorts to £76.50, £76 (x2), £75, £74, £72.50 & £66 to average over £73 of 74 hoggs. Elsewhere a very much tail ender show saw Peter Gibbons of Colyton reached £68, Roger & John Dennis of made £66.50 and other medium sorts were £55-£62.

70 BREEDING & GRAZING EWES

A handful of pens of breeders sold to £83 for Suffolks from J Bostock of , Dorset’s to £71 for Corrienne Hall of Burrington and organic mixed aged Lleyns to £70 & £68 for J & J Rider of Lezant. Grazers sold to £80 & £75 for decent ewes from Keith & Shirley Wotton of Dittisham and £52 for Whiteface Rams from Marguerite Ashman of .

COUPLES ( 297 EWES & 426 LAMBS)

A reduced number of couples were a similar trade overall although as last week, third quality or those with a fault are becoming increasingly harder to place. The sale today was topped by a pen of NC Mule Hogg doubles at £176 from Peter Tucker of Cadeleigh who also had singles at £162 and £159. Other hogg singles to £160 & £156 for Tony Pickard of South Molton and strong ewe doubles from Michael Vooght of to £174 and £170 (x2) whilst large lots of old mule ewes with young lambs looked well sold at £162 & £154 for Phil Rogers & family of Noss Mayo and £160 for Steve & Sarah Cole of Calverleigh. Old mule singles from Steve Palmer of Bovey Tracey sold at £124, matched by Michael Vooght with a BM Dorset and only bettered by Robert & Janet Phipps of Exbourne with younger Suffolk cross outfits at £128. Three strong consignments of Whiteface Dartmoor couples saw doubles to £132 and singles to £94 again for Robert & Janet Phipps whilst mixed bunches sold well at £105, £90 & £86 for Peter Vooght of . Averages are back slightly due mainly to quality at £126 an outfit £52 per life.
