Generally, people migrate to cities for various reasons such as limited employment opportunities in their place of origin, freedom from poverty, and socio-political unrest to the place of destination. An International webinar was organized on June 20 th , 2020 on topic “The Post- Panademic World order: what can you do to ace the new game?” by Department of Botany, Ganga Devi Mahila College, Patna.

Pandemic has cast its spell all around but the spirit of teaching fraternity of our College remains undefeated. An international webinar under the aegis of Department of Botany was held on 20 June ’20 to understand the effects of the pandemic, the changes it is likely to bring in the methods of formal learning and in the job market. The webinar also discussed the way forward, especially for the younger lot, to equip and align better with the new eco-system.

The topic “The post pandemic world order: what can you do to ace the new game?” could not have been titled better as it was intended to ignite a resolve to win over the present day challenges. And the speakers, Prof. Sankalp Pratap from IIM Trichy and Ms. Deepa Miglani Sinha, VP from Babbel, Berlin, Germany hit the bull in the eye by their incisive narration. To extract maximum from these two speakers, Ms. Anshika Sinha, an investment associate from Lightbox Venture, Mumbai played the role of a moderator to near perfection. She acted as a bridge between the speakers and the audience.

Prof. Sankalp Pratap explained that formal education had already moved more towards online learning and he cited the present webinar as demonstrating that trend. But he also cautioned that online learning was not the end, it has to be tempered by doing it personally/practically to ingrain the knowledge fully. He also said that the job market was changing its contour and permanent jobs were getting replaced by jobs of temporary nature which were more need based or more contractual in nature. Hence, it

21

was imperative, that job aspirants hone their skills as the market place will respect those who are more skilled and who can deliver.

Ms. Deepa Miglani Sinha also talked about the necessity of skill development. She emphasized on the need to build one’s own brand and reputation to remain relevant and thereby in demand. By branding she meant one should devote time to develop those skills intensively which he/she wished to acquire and practice. The entire persona needed a look-up to survive. Therefore, it was necessary to find out how much time one was devoting in the desired area and this could be easily tracked by maintaining a journal of daily activities.

The webinar was organized by Dr. Punam Sinha, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany and it witnessed introduction of “online” registration and feedback forms and issuance of e-certificates. At the beginning, Prof. Mani Bala had set the tone of the discussion in her welcome address by highlighting the relevance of the topic and emphasizing that one had to win over fear to win the game. The webinar came to an

22

end with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Bimla Choudhary, Head of Department of Botany.

In conclusion, it can be summarized that Darwin’s theory “survival of the fittest” continues to remains relevant and one only needs to develop and upgrade his/her skills to ace the new game.

23

Webinar-12(International Webinar by Department of Mathematics)

A one day international webinar was organized by Ganga Devi Mahila Mahavidayalaya, Kankarbagh, Patna on “Numbers, the ultimate tool: interpreting numericals data to analyse the development of COVID – 19 crisis” on June 24 th 2020 on zoom app.

Background: COVID-19 presents one of the most serious health threats. Though it is primarily a health crisis, it is to a great extent a social and economic crisis as well. In order to understand the true impacts of COVID-19 crisis, we can analyse numerical data emerging from different parts of the world to comment on how the health, behavioural, social and economic ramifications of this crisis are panning out and further use this knowledge to frame effective planning policies and programmes in these diverse development sectors. An underlying feature of the rapid spread of this disease is its urban face, building on high-speed and fast global, regional and mobility. We present some highlights from across the globe to highlight ways in which the COVID-related vulnerabilities intersect with the already present health, mobility, digital and socioeconomic inequalities.

Highlights: Numerical data analyses has been so far employed to extract information on the following aspects: Effects of the built environment and socio-economic factors on epidemic vulnerability in urban neighbourhoods and across cities. Short term implications for people's practices of mobility. Mid- and long-term impacts on daily urban mobility, residential characteristics, and spread of COVID-19.

26

For example, the case of Malta highlights the socio-economic and geographic variations in spread of COVID-19 virus. The northern island, housing a population with relatively high socio-economic status, was less affected than the southern island. Further, the southern island with higher rates of pollution also exhibited higher rates

Figure 1: Map of infections in each locality and by region in Malta source: https://www.tvm.com.mt/en/news/map-shows-area-with-highest-number-of-covid-19- infections -is -in -the -centre -of -malta/ of infection.

Further, there are important differences in transport modes used by different socio- economic groups, and by simply plotting the numerical data on mode usage, we can highlight important differences between the rich and the poor, and the formal and informal sectors. This enables us to comment on why a flat lock-down policy might not be the right solution in future shock-events like the COVID-19 episode.

Figure 2: Workplace during the week of March 16 -22, 2020, in Santiago de Chile source: Tirachini et al. 2020

As is evident in figure 2, the case from Chile highlights that it was the higher-income groups which had the privilege of working from home (WFH) and lower-income

27

groups, often working in the informal sector, simply did not have the luxury to WFH. This result is consistent across the world.

A number of facets can be explored by employing numerical analysis in this manner. For example, rise in unemployment (example case of India presented in figure 3), decline in tourism, delineating high-risk spaces, operational and cost effectiveness of protection measures, predictions based on mathematical modelling exercises etc. are some critical factors to be constantly developed and monitored.

28

Webinar-14(International webinar organized by Department of History and Dalit Aadivasi Professors scholars Association (DASPA)

A one day international webinar was organized by Dalit Aadivasi Professors scholars Association (DASPA) in collaboration with Ganga Devi Mahila Mahavidayalaya, Kankarbagh, Patna on topic Rising gender based violence during COVID-19 on June 27 th 2020 on zoom app.

Ganga Devi Mahila Mahavidyalaya in collaboration with DAPSA had organized its International Webinar on the topic “Rise in Gender-Based Domestic Violencce during COVID-19” which is a crucial issue to address during this panademic. Ganga Devi Mahila is a constituent unit of Patliputra University. It is a premier Girls Colleges which imparts Senior secondary and Undergraduate degree in Arts and Science. The rise of domestic violence is a major concern all over the world. We addressed an issue, which has only heightened during the lockdown but otherwise prevalent in society.

During the COVID-19 panademic, there has been a surge in the cases of domestic violence. There has been a global slowdown, massive economic dislocation, shut down of businesses, a spectra of looming unemployment often accompanied by the threat of hunger, poverty and a general uncertainty regarding the future. Keeping in mind the discourse around current debates and sensitization about the intersectionality of the society and how various identities of an individual subject him/her/them to different lived experiences, we need to recognize representation with respect to social identities. Understanding gender-based exclusion of women requiresone to look into the problematic aspects rooted in history. Customsand social practices come together

31

to create social images and solidify hierarchical structures. The nature of patriarchy in India is a complex interaction of religion and these societal norms. Patriarchal power structure have always strived to control women, using customs and rituals working against women at both structural and systematic levels. These subjugation and control have deprived women of their autonomy and agency further causing them to be in the dark about their own rights. The violence against women is deliberated upon to express power relations against a section of people in the gender spectrum. The webinar aimed to discuss the nuances of the hindrance women face at the onset of the COVID-19.

Our speakers are achievers in many different fields, Mariam Diallo Drame, President AFLED and President Obama’s forum with YALI, Natalie Kostus, V.P. International Alliance of women, Nayana Sahasrabuddhe, Vice President –BSS and our Guest of Honour was Prof. Mani Bala, Principal, Ganga Devi Mahila College. It was an immense honour to have an all-women panel as part of this webinar. Our discussion was thooughtful, analytical and inspiring.

Miss Natalie voiced about a very important case of cyberbullying and how teenagers are more vulnerable especially young women to such crime which has seen a surge during COVID-19. She expresse her opinion on women in the informal sector who aren’t paid during these times and this has worsened the situation. As her position is from economic point of view, she gave a well-defined view on finances being one of the causes of domestic abuse at home duriing COVID-19.

Nayana Sahasrabuddhe spoke about shift from feminism to familism and how men are more aggressive, and they need to perform bettter with their partners and work on themselves. She highlighted the narrative of the Indian Society in particular and the lack of gender sensitization in our culture. And lastly, Miss mariam spoke about the African perspective about how traditionand culture bind women and make them more susceptible to gender-based violence at home which has increased during COVID-19. 32

The Webinar was organised by Dalit Adivasi Professors scholars Association (DASPSA) in association with Ganga Devi Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Patna. DAPSA is a new, independent, non-partisan think tank which brings forth discourses of the marginalized by the marginalized.

The welcome note was delivered by Prof. mani Bala, Priincipal, Ganga devi Mahila Mahavidyalaya,Patna and Mayalu Boro, Joint Secretary, DAPSA delivered the introduction of the session. The webinar came to end by a thank you note by Dr. Pramanshi Jaidev, Associate Professor,Ganga devi Mahila Mahavidyalaya,Patna who made a point that “Women Power” has cut across all the spectrums of life from being successful doctors, engineers, academicians from being on war front also and lastly Miss Aditi Narayani Gen. Secretary, DAPSA was the moderator of the session and connected the audience to the speakers.
