NEWS FROM THE OFFICE - MR. LEIBEL, PRINCIPAL Home of the Bears!!! December is here and with that, we are well into the second term. Term one nd report cards were handed out on Friday, November 2 and Parent-Teacher Horizon School Division #205 interviews took place on Wednesday, November 7th from 5:30pm-8:00pm. Thank you to all the parents who attended this evening. Fall extra-curricular activities have quickly come to a close. The senior girls’ volleyball team competed at the provincial championship on November 16th and 17th where they finished with a silver medal. Congratulations girls and coaches. Thank you to the numerous volunteers and community organizations that have supported our sporting events. This type of generosity is going above and beyond and certainly helps create positive experiences for our student athletes. On Thursday, November 8th, WCHS hosted its annual Remembrance Day service. On this day we honored those who fought for our freedom, we reflected on the Inside this issue: price they paid, and we acknowledged the benefits we gained through their sacrifice. NEWS FROM THE BEAR DEN - SR. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL, MS. JORDAN The Bears claimed their fourth medal in four years by bringing home the silver at Provin- cials on November 16/17th in Carrot River. A second place finish at both Conferences and Regionals qualified the Bears for provincials along with 9 other teams from around the province. In Wynyard's pool were Kipling, Macklin, Pierceland, and Carrot River. Pool A fea- tured Wakaw, Preeceville, LCBI, Il-a-le Cross, and Lampman. The Bears finished round robin play with a record of 3-1, first in their pool. In the quarterfi- nals they faced off against Lampman, defeating them in straight sets. In the semi-finals the Bears defeated to LCBI in straight sets. After the win, the Bears moved on to the gold medal game against Wakaw. The Bears came out playing well, with an answer for everything Wakaw threw at them. They took the first set 25-16. The second set was just the opposite with Wakaw getting off to a fast start and not looking back, winning 25-10. The third set was a battle from the first point to the last. In the end, the Bears dropped the third set 17-15, to win the silver medal. The hard fought provincial weekend capped off a successful season for the WCHS Bears Sr. Girls’ volleyball team. The girls played in seven tournaments, with three tournament finals, winning their home tournament for the second year in a row and qualifying for provincials for the ninth straight year. The silver medal that the girls captured, following their silver medal in 2015 and their bronze medals in 2016 and 2017, is the first time the Bears have won medals at four provincial volleyball tournaments in a row. It is also a medal haul that is unmatched by any other team in their category during that time. Congratulations on a great season, Bears! Page 2 DONOR AND VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION - MR. LEIBEL, PRINCIPAL I know you have all heard me use the old adage “It takes a village to raise a child”, but it could not be truer this year. I am always afraid to publicly recognize local businesses, organizations and individuals for fear of forgetting someone, but it would be remiss if I did not try. I would like to thank the Wynyard Composite High School Community Council for the creation, promotion and dedication towards our school nutrition program. This program is organized by Iris Erickson and Murray Proznick but also includes countless community volunteers. Those who have not been able to volunteer their time have donated in other ways, by providing food and monetary funds to this program. The Wynyard Kinettes is a big supporter of this initiative as they have donated $2000 this year. Kari Zemlak was instrumental in finding and donating countless plates, cups, bowls, etc. to support the nutrition program’s “green” initiative. Using washable dinnerware and utensils has not only saved the school money, but it also demonstrates to our students the importance of environmental stewardship. Last but not least, I would like to thank the Wynyard Co-op for their financial support, food donations and providing volunteers for our program. Your efforts have helped support our students tremendously and it would be difficult to run an initiative such as this without your support. In addition to the WCHS Nutrition Program, we have also had support from other businesses and organizations around the community. Napa Auto Parts has sup- plied bottled water to many of our events, The Peppertree has provided gift certifi- cates for SRC rewards, the BMO has supported our school in various ways, and the Wynyard Advance is always available to report on the events happening in our school. Every year the Wynyard Kinsmen reaches out and asks for ways they can support the things we do for our children. This year the Kinsmen donated over $14,000 worth of technological supplies to our school. This included 32 Chrome- books plus a Chromebook cart. With these additional resources, we have now met our school goal of providing our students with a 1:2 ratio of Chromebooks to students. Thank you, Wynyard and area, for helping us raise our children to be intelligent, creative and giving members of society. - Mr. Leibel, Principal

The 2018 Jr. Football Season wrapped up on Tuesday October 2nd with an exciting Blue vs Gold scrimmage. The game was followed by a delicious pizza and rib supper catered by the Pepper Tree restaurant. A short awards program followed to honor the players for their commitment and dedication throughout the year. A huge thank you to Dean Heu- chert for stepping forward to help supervise and coach this year’s team. A huge thank you to our Grade 12 player-mentors who did another fabulous job helping with this year’s program. Jr. players are reminded to clearly mark their helmet and shoulder pads and have them returned to the football room for our annual Football Sask equip- ment inspection which occurs during the offseason. The 2018 Sr. Bears team finished the season in third place in Confer- ence 3 2A six man with 4 wins and 2 losses. The Bears travelled to Lani- gan on Saturday October 20th to take on the 2nd place Lazers in the first (L-R) Tanner Remenda, Levi Gudnason, Kyle Tarry and Shane Newberry (Grade 12 Wynyard Bear players) with a sample of the canned goods that round of playoffs. This ended the Bears 2018 season. The coaching staff would like to thank the graduating players for their time and commitment over the past 6 seasons. We wish you luck in all your future athletic and academic pursuits. Players are encouraged to continue their football growth by attending Football Saskatchewan camps and by using our weight room during the offseason. To conclude the 2018 season the WCHS football program would like to once again thank the Wynyard Co-op for the wonderful sponsorship during Fuel Good Days. We would also like to thank all patrons who supported our team finan- cially by buying our progressive 50/50 tickets. LINDAL This year, the junior girls team consisted of: Ella Madarash, Cindy Singkala, Kiyra Kletzel, Emma Nichol, Jocelyn Hilts, Anne Dela Cruz, Amelia Both, Addyson Boylak, Maggie Tomblin, Hayley Bodnar, Emma Gudmundson, Laina Salter, Olivia Gillespie, Jessica Peesker and Olivia Stephaniuk. Since we had an overwhelming number of girls wanting to play this year; we decided it would be best to split the girls into a league team and a tournament team to give everyone an opportunity to play. The fall was a very busy time for the girls. Our season started with practices, going 2 times per week, as they prepared for league and 5 tournaments. Tournaments began with the grade 7/8 girls travelling to Bruno to attend a grade 7/8 tournament. After an outstanding performance in Bruno, our girls attended tournaments in Wynyard, Watrous, Foam Lake, Wadena and finally Pre-districts in Watson. The girls played great at each of their league games and tournaments. The growth and development of these young ladies was immense. So much has happened with and around this program, and I am very grate- ful for all of it. First of all, I would really like to thank our senior girls for coming and helping out at practices. Their passion for the sport has inspired our junior players to work harder and emulate their successes. I need to thank, of course, all of our parents and fans who have supported us both on and off the court! We couldn’t have done this without you. The junior soccer season started the 1st week of September. There were 22 students signed up, several who had never played organized soccer before. Team members included Jessi- ca Peesker, Parker Lalach, Caleb Reeve, Thomas Salter, Haven Dela Cruz, Jade Murphy, Matthew Christensen, Zachary Magnusson, Emma Gudmundson, Addyson Boylak, Laina Salter, Callum Maksymovitch, Keegan L’Heureux, Carlos Lamber, Gage Joynt, Jack Chor- ney, Leif Burns, C’Jay Valenzuela, Kevin Gimena, Matthew Jackson, Tony Laszlo and Renzo Vallejo. The season was short so not much time for practice but the players picked up the sport quickly. We only won one game this year but everyone had an opportunity to play at least one game and they seemed to enjoy the sport. Most of our games were played away which gave the team a chance to bond while travelling in the school van. Hopefully the practices, games and travelling together as a team will create positive high school memories that will last a lifetime. Hunter Hrushka, Korsen Maksymovitch and Kyla Salter advance the ball for WCHS. There was a strong push from a large group of grade 10 students to have senior soccer this fall so we started a team. Team members included Christin Peesker, Alyssa Mozel, Mi- chael Siton, Kyla Salter, Hunter Hrushka, Emily Mamer, Korsen Maksymovitch, Walker Bolt, Quinn Burns, Emerson Chorney, Aaron Mozel and Jacob Gillespie. We added some grade 9's and 11's to the mix to form a co-ed team that competed in the boys division. Several of the players had never played organized soccer before. They improved greatly and turned out to be strong soccer players. We played in a snowstorm that may have turned out to be the most fun we had all fall. We did not win a game and only one game was even close, but the players still played hard, displayed excel- lent sportsmanship and represented WCHS very well. I was very proud of this group of

September and October were busy months for the SRC. Everyone was getting back into the usual routine. This year the SRC had a lot of planning to do to welcome back the students for another fantastic year. From September 19th to 21st, the annual Saskatchewan Student Leader- ship Conference was held in Langen- burg Saskatchewan. SRC members Olivia Stephanuik, Madison Gud- mundson, Delsea Erickson and Raya Erickson attended the conference. They had the opportunity to listen to motivational speakers, meet new people and attend various sessions focusing on different aspects of life and leadership. Overall it was a great experience for everyone and all members came back with tons of new ide- Gymblast 2018 - Team Green as to make this school year a great one! We also had three students go to Canadian Student Leadership Conference in Edmonton, Al- berta starting their journey from Jasper. This conference offers a more extensive view on leadership and the benefits of leaders in your school. Every Friday in September students and staff were encouraged to dress in school colors on blue and gold days. This helped create an atmosphere of support for school teams and students. Over the past months all of our sports teams have done a fantastic job representing our school and all events. Our school participated in the Terry Fox run on September 21st. Our students raised $1,352.70 in donations and pledges. On October 2nd, we started fundraising for the magazine campaign. The last collection day wrapped up on the 23rd. Thank you to all the students who have Gymblast 2018 - Team Red sold magazines. Your hard work and effort in this fundraising program will help support the various activities the SRC provides for the student body.

Page 8 School pictures were October 9th and retakes were on the 29th. Students had a fun afternoon on the 18th, participating in Gymblast. Halloween week started October 29th, pumpkins were brought in for activities and painting. On the 30th we painted pumpkins at lunch with the winners getting bragging rights. On Halloween we had games in the gym and through an app called Goosechase. Winners of the costume contest received Subway gift cards. November went by in a blur with our month consisting of a Movember “Money Stache” competition between our participants, Wear the Bear day, fruit and cookie dough sales, magazine wrap up, blue and gold day and the beginning of basketball season. Fruit and cookie dough sales ended on November 8th. Thank Gymblast 2018 - Team Yellow you to everyone who made this fundraiser a success! The SRC and Mrs. Fisher organized a Remembrance Day service on November 9th. Thank you to all those who participated in the service. It gave us a chance, to reflect and remember those who have given so much for our freedom. There were 15 students/teachers that participated in Movember this year (an annual fundraiser that recognizes men’s health issues). The winners of the Movember competition were - Mr. Adam Jordan ($93.50), followed by Carson Froehlich ($91.20), Carson Fisher ($55.05) and Mr. Ryan Peterson ($43.00). Our monthly Wear the Bear day was on the 14th. Pizza was given out to all of the students who participated. Our magazine assembly took place on November 23rd. Students participated in different activities as a reward for selling a certain amount of magazines. There were two blue and gold days this month. These days recognize our students and sports teams and allow us to show our support towards them. Gymblast 2018 - Team Blue Another event that started this month is our colour team competition. Students and staff were divided into four colour teams that will be used until the end of the year. The more that students and staff participate in school events, the more points they earn for their team. Nineteen members represented WCHS in cross-country during the 2018 season. They included Laina Salter, Gavin Bodnarchuk, Addyson Boylak, Elyse Latoski, Denton Bow- en, Evan Fisher, Parker Lalach, James Neal, Daniel Babut, Derrik Prisiak, Caleb Reeve, Triston Panchuk, Matthew Chris- tensen, Jesslyn Leibel, Julian Fitzgerald, Mary Latoski, Jessie Froehlich, Wyatt Bolt, Carson Fisher and Tristan Bergquist. The team trained intensely and the results from the meets they competed in illustrate their dedication to their sport. The Pre-district meet was held in Wynyard on September 26th. Our runners competed in six categories. Laina Salter earned a 2nd place finish in the Wee Pee Girls’ 2km race. Gavin Bodnarchuk placed 25th in the Wee Pee Boys’ 2km run. Four athletes competed in the Pee Wee 3km category. Ad- dyson Boylak and Elyse Latoski crossed the finish line 3rd and th 7 place in the Girls’ run. Den- Laina Salter - Wee Pee Girls’ 2km race. ton Bowen earned a 3rd place finish in the Pee Wee Boys’ run while Evan Fisher followed close behind in 4th. Five runners competed in the Bantam Boys’ 3km run - Parker Lalach (4th), James Neal (6th), Dan- iel Babut (7th), Derrik Prisiak (9th) and Triston Panchuk (10th). Matthew Christensen was the sole WCHS competitor in the Midget Boys’ 3km race and crossed the finish line in 8th position. Jesslyn Leibel competed in the Jr. Girls’ 4km category and earned 1st place while Julian Fitzgerald placed 4th in the Jr. Boys’ race. In the Sr. Girls’ 4km race, Mary Latoski placed 1st and Jessie Froehlich finished in 4th position. The Sr. Boys’ 5km category saw Wyatt Bolt in 2nd place, Carson Fisher in 3rd and Tristan Bergquist in 4thth position. The top 10 runners in each category advanced to Districts. The Derrik Prisiak - Bantam Boys’ 3km race. Cross-Country District Championship was held on Thurs- day, October 4th at Watson. Sixteen WCHS runners competed in six categories.

Page 10 In the Wee Pee Girls’ race, Laina Salter placed 2nd. Addyson Boylak finished in 3rd place and Elyse Latoski crossed the finish line in 13th position in the Pee Wee Girls’ category. The Pee Wee Boys’ race saw Denton Bowen finish- ing in 7th position while Evan Fisher earned a 17th place finish. Five of our athletes competed in the Bantam Boys’ race. Parker Lalach placed 13th, James Neal finished in 14th place, Daniel Babut earned a 15th place followed by Derrik Prisiak in 16th place and Triston Panchuk in 18th position. Matthew Christensen crossed the finish line in 13th position in the Midget Boys’ category. In the Jr. Girls’ 4km race, Jesslyn Leibel placed 1st while Julian Fitzgerald finished in 12th position in the Jr. Boys’ event. Mary Latoski and Jessie Froehlich ran the Sr. Girls’ 4km race and finished in 2nd and 13th. One competitor ran in the Sr. Boys’ category. Wyatt Bolt earned an 9th place finish. On Saturday, October 13th four of our runners competed in the provincial meet. There were 565 athletes competing in six categories.
