The site was discovered in 1985 and was also tested in that year. In 1987, the Midwest Archeological Center conducted archeological excavations at the site in advance of a planned campground redevelopment program which will impact portions of the site. Important information on site age and artifact assemblages was obtained. The site is multi- component, with evidence of repeated prehistoric occupations over both the Middle and Late Woodland Periods in addition to late historic Euro-American uses. Platte River watershed, last surveyed July 2010 Mark A. Tonello Environment Platte Lake (Fig. 1) is 2,516 acres in size and located several miles northwest of the city of Honor, in northwestern Benzie County, Michigan, in the northwestern Lower Peninsula. The maximum depth of Platte Lake is about 90 feet, with the average depth being about 25 feet. Approximately one third of the lake is shallower than 15 feet. Platte Lake is in the Platte River watershed (Fig. 2), with the Platte River flowing into the southeastern shore of the lake and flowing out of the northwestern shore; there is no lake-level control structure. Platte Lake is accessible to migrations of fish from Lake Michigan, although a seasonal salmon weir is operated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on the lower Platte River. The weir is used to temporarily block migrating coho and Chinook salmon so that they can be counted, and in some cases, harvested. The weir is operated annually during September and October. The shoreline of Platte Lake is heavily developed with homes and cottages, except for the southeastern shore where the Platte River flows into Platte Lake. Shallow, near-shore areas of Platte Lake are predominately sand, with large stretches of gravel shoals in 2 to 10 feet of water. The remaining deep water areas are marl, or a muck/marl combination (Seites 2010).

    MI/DEQ/WRD-11/002 MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY WATER RESOURCES DIVISION JANUARY 2011 STAFF REPORT BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE BETSIE AND PLATTE RIVERS WATERSHEDS BENZIE, MANISTEE, GRAND TRAVERSE, AND LEELANAU COUNTIES, MICHIGAN JULY-SEPTEMBER 2008 INTRODUCTION Staff of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), Surface Water Assessment Section (SWAS), conducted qualitative biological and habitat surveys in the Betsie and Platte Rivers watersheds from July to September 2008. This assessment was designed to qualitatively characterize the biotic integrity of macroinvertebrate communities with respect to existing habitat conditions at selected sites throughout the Betsie and Platte Rivers watersheds. Surveys were performed according to the MDEQ rapid bioassesment protocol, Procedure 51 (MDEQ, 1990; Creal et al., 1996), at 11 stations in wadeable segments of the mainstem, and tributaries to, the Betsie and Platte Rivers, as well as coastal tributaries to Lake Michigan in the Northwest Lower Peninsula (Table 1). Two site selection methods were used to assess northwest Lower Peninsula streams in 2008: stratified random and targeted. A probabilistic monitoring approach, using stratified random site selection to address statewide and regional questions about water quality, was used to select stations within the northwest Lower Peninsula region (MDEQ, 2006 draft). For the purposes of probabilistic site selection, the northwest Lower Peninsula consists of the Betsie River, Platte River, Boardman River, and Elk River watersheds, and the many small watersheds that flow to Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay. The biosurveys east of the Betsie and Platte Rivers (including coastal tributaries north to Mackinaw) were conducted separately from the Betsie and Platte Rivers watersheds and are addressed in a separate report (Holden, 2009).

Many of the logging or mining communities of the 1800s are ghost towns today. In some cases you may find abandoned buildings or ruins of infrastructure that tell a story of past cultural and economic activity. In Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, little evidence remains of many of the little towns that were once the center of economic activity in the area but couldn’t adapt to meet changing economic conditions.

    MI/EGLE/WRD-20/009 MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT, GREAT LAKES, AND ENERGY WATER RESOURCES DIVISION MARCH 2020 STAFF REPORT Biological and water chemistry surveys of selected stations in the Betsie, Platte, and Crystal Rivers, and Herring and Bowens Creeks watersheds; Benzie, Leelanau, Grand Traverse, and Manistee Counties, Michigan; June-September 2018 Introduction Biological and physical habitat conditions of selected water bodies in the Betsie, Platte, and Crystal Rivers, and Herring and Bowens Creeks watersheds; Benzie, Leelanau, Grand Traverse, and Manistee Counties, were assessed by staff of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Water Resources Division (WRD), Surface Water Assessment Section (SWAS), from June-September 2018. Water bodies include those listed in Table 1. The primary objectives of the assessments were to: 1) Assess the current status and condition of individual water bodies and determine if Michigan Water Quality Standards (WQS) are being met. 2) Evaluate biological integrity temporal trends. 3) Satisfy monitoring requests submitted by internal and external customers. 4) Evaluate the effectiveness of the Nonpoint Source (NPS) Program. 5) Identify NPS of water quality impairment. Watershed Information Platte River Watershed The Platte River is a coldwater designated stream (Michigan Department of Natural Resources [MDNR], 1997) that originates approximately 30 miles upstream from its confluence with Lake Michigan. There are only three designated warmwater tributaries in the Platte River watershed (Table 1). The Platte River starts as an outlet of Long Lake in the western portion of Grand Traverse County.     Swimmer’s Itch Assessment Analysis 2018 – Platte Lake (Benzie County, MI) Page 1 Platte Lake (Benzie County, MI) Swimmer’s Itch Assessment Report 2018 Introduction/Background Swimmer’s itch is a dermatitis caused by the group of parasitic flatworms (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda) called avian schistosomes. These parasites naturally infect a variety of waterfowl species, and all live as larvae in a snail intermediate host species. Because the life cycles of avian schistosomes reQuire the alternation of living within a bird and snail host, successful swimmer’s itch control strategies have focused on trapping infected waterfowl and relocating them to areas devoid of the suitable snail intermediate host species. This approach breaks the parasite’s life cycle for one year, and dramatically reduces swimmer’s itch cases on affected lakes. Throughout lakes in the northern US, the most common avian schistosome affecting humans is Trichobilharzia stagnicolae, which uses the common merganser (Mergus merganser) and a lymneid snail as its definitive and intermediate host, respectively. In February of 2018, The Michigan Natural Resources Commission approved a new Common Merganser Control Policy for lake associations that want to combat swimmer’s itch. As part of that policy, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reQuiring that permit applicants conduct swimmer’s itch assessment work as the first step in the permitting process.
