Prvé telefóny boli čisto mechanického prevedenia. Veľmi často používaným telefónom bol trubkový telefón. Prvý známy opis takéhoto telefónu sa zachoval v Číne z roku 968, podľa jeho vynálezcu Kung – Foo – Whing, ktorý využil rúru na hovorenie do diaľky. Typ trubkového telefónu sa rozšíril do rôznych činností, všade tam, kde bolo potrebné prenášať informácie na väčšiu vzdialenosť. Ako príklad nám môže poslúžiť lodná doprava, kde umožňoval relatívne spoľahlivé zvukové spojenie v oddelených častiach lode. Ďalším typom telefónu je lankový telefón. Tvoria ho dve membrány spojené napnutým lankom, niťou alebo strunou. Chvenie jednej membrány sa strunou prenáša na druhú membránu. Tento typ telefónu si môže vyrobiť každý z dvoch plastových pohárikov prepojených niekoľko metrovou niťou.
