These to him are two complementary things that are both negative and positive. In the negative sense, Wiredu’s conceptual decolonization is the process that seeks to avoid and reverse “through a critical self-awareness the unexamined assimilation” in the thoughts of contemporary African philosophers those conceptual frameworks that are found in western or other philosophical cultures that have influenced African ways of life and thought. On the positive side, conceptual decolonization to Wiredu involves the exploitation of the vast “resources” of African conceptual frameworks in philosophical exercises or reflections on all the basic and crucial problems of contemporary philosophy. This establishes Wiredu’s conceptual decolonization on historical foundation of the African problems through the process of colonialism. This historical trend in Africa has significant impacts on the whole of African system, which include education, politics, culture, science, technology, religion, culture, language, and thought patterns. -

Black Excellence in School Psychology
Black Excellence in Psychology: Past and Present Pioneers in Psychology ALBERT SIDNEY BECKHAM (1897-1964) Dr. Beckham is considered to be the first African American school psychologist practicing in the Chicago Public Schools. He founded the first psychological laboratory at Howard University and published over 20 articles on the effect of counseling on high school students, childhood behavioral problems, intelligence testing and life satisfaction. Dr. Beckham brought together ministers whose parishes included families of students he was working with, allowing for the first time a church-neighborhood- school relationship in the community that benefited African American youth. Learn more about Dr. Beckham here FRANCIS CECIL SUMNER (1895-1954) Dr. Sumner was the first African American to receive his Ph.D. in Psychology. He helped establish the psychology department at Howard University to train African American psychologists. Dr. Sumner completed a vast amount of research that counteracted racism and bias in psychological studies of African Americans. Some of his students went on to become leading psychologists, including Dr. Kenneth Clark. Learn more about Dr. Sumner here INEZ BEVERLY PROSSER (1891-1934) Dr. Prosser was the first African American woman to receive her Ph.D. and the first black female psychologist. Her dissertation examined the academic development of African American children in mixed and segregated schools. Her findings showed that African American children fared better socially and academically in segregated schools. Specifically, Dr. Prosser found that African American children from integrated schools experienced more social maladjustment and felt less secure, a barrier to their learning, reaching controversial conclusions in the decades leading to the Brown v. -

Black psychologists grounded in a Black/African psychology tradition have long challenged the hegemonic paradigms and racist beliefs perpetuated by Eurocentric approaches to psychology. However, in the absence of teaching about the important contributions of Black/African psychology, many individuals remain unaware of its historical and contemporary impact on the discipline of psychology. Using the three methodological approaches of deconstruction, reconstruction, and construction as a framework, the authors identify the many ways in which Black/African psychology has challenged prevailing beliefs in psychology about Black behavior and culture and forever changed psychological research on Black people. (Head of Department) Signature Date ii Abstract The present 2012 Akuapem-Twi Bible had been the labour of several revision exercises from its existence as fragments of Bible books till the New Testament was completed and later the first full version published in 1871. Over the years the task of revision work had aimed at eliminating ambiguous phrases and words in the Akuapem-Twi Bible that are not translated in accordance with the thought pattern and worldview of the Akuapem people. However after the 2012 publication of the Akuapem-Twi Bible, there still exist a number of translation and exegetical problems in the translated text; clear examples are 1 Timothy 6:10a, 2 Timothy 1: 10b, 2:20b, Titus 1: 7, 11b which are in focus for this study. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract That Most Perfidious Institution is a study of Africans - slaves and slave owners - and their central roles in both the expansion of slavery in the early nineteenth century and attempts to reform servile relationships in the late nineteenth century. The pivotal place of Africans can be seen in the interaction between indigenous slave-owning elites (aristocrats and urban Euro-African merchants), local European administrators, and slaves themselves. My approach to this problematic is both chronologically and geographically comparative. The central comparison between Senegal and the Gold Coast contrasts the varying impact of colonial policies, integration into the trans-Atlantic economy; and, more importantly, the continuity of indigenous institutions and the transformative agency of indigenous actors. -

volume 19, no. 41 1. The Heterogeneity Problem september 2019 On May 6 1643, Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia picked up her pen and wrote her first letter to René Descartes. The question that she poses to Descartes is one of the most devastating critiques, if not the most, of his metaphysics: How can a thinking substance, the human mind, bring about voluntary actions in a material substance, the human Amo on the body? This was not the first time that Descartes had heard this ques- tion.1 Pierre Gassendi, in the Fifth Objections to the Meditations, raises just this worry, asking Descartes to explain how “the corporeal can communicate with the incorporeal,” and, moreover, of “what relation- Heterogeneity ship may be established between the two” (AT VII.345/CSM II.239). The objection raised by Elisabeth and Gassendi has come to be known as the “heterogeneity problem,” which arises when we wonder how Problem two wholly heterogeneous substances can causally interact in any meaningful way.2 Descartes’s response to Gassendi is that the whole problem contained in such questions arises simply from a supposition that is false and cannot in any way be proved, namely that, if the soul and the body are two substances whose nature is different, this prevents them from being able to act on each other. Kwate1 This paper contends that African-centered models of psychopathology represent a heretical challenge to orthodox North American Mental Health. Heresy is the defiant rejection of ideology from a smaller community within the orthodoxy. African-centered models of psychopathology use much of the same language and ideas about the diagnostic process as Western psychiatry and clinical psychology but explicitly reject the ideological foundations of illness definition. The nature of the heretical critique is discussed, and implications for the future of this school of thought are offered. KEY WORDS: African Americans; African-centered psychology; cultural psychiatry; heresy; nosology. For some time, African American scholars have written about the need to incorporate issues of race and culture into the practice of psychology. 2 In addition, some psychologists have applied cultural concepts to specific groups within the Diaspora, such as Caribbean Americans.3 Initially, there was a great deal of resis- tance to accepting these ideas. Indeed, psychological models of theory and practice that emphasize cultural concepts regarding African Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans, and Native Americans are still not considered “mainstream,” but rather, “ethnic minority psychology.” However, over time, these challenges to the orthodoxy have been tolerated within what Wolpe calls a controlled cultural space for noncomformist thought.4 1Address correspondence to Naa Oyo A. Griffith1 Abstract Aggregating and interpreting available qualitative data is a necessary next step to understanding the mental health needs and experiences of Black men. This study describes the findings from a meta-synthesis of qualitative research on Black men’s mental health and well-being using Paterson, Thorne, Canam, and Jillings’s qualitative meta-study approach. Though previous studies have reported various forms of racism as salient concerns for Black men’s mental health and well-being, findings from this meta-study revealed seven themes that present an initial step toward advancing the knowledge pertaining to how Black men perceive and express their mental health and well-being. -

This is an assumption that I have never doubted. If you are reading this, you too are a person. Or so I have been taught to assume. But why have I been taught this? What makes us PeoPle, and why can I be so sure of these “facts”? These questions came to me as I reFlected on the different ways we treat other PeoPle compared to the way we treat non-humans.
