In 1842, Matthew and Phillip Schwerer returned to Germany and the business was sold to Augustine Kleiser and Andrew Kleiser who continued to trade as P. Schwerer. In 1846, Matthew Schwerer returned to York and resumed business, firstly at 18 Stonegate and later at 14 Stonegate. Returning to the Kleiser 's, by 1857, Augustine seems to have left the scene and Andrew was joined by his brother Joseph. Earlier the 1851 census shows the visit of another brother from Germany, Martin. Martin decided to stay and by 1861 had purchased the business of Matthew Schwerer at 14, Stonegate. The 1871 census has the firm of M. Kleiser & Co., under the management of Bernard Tritschler. By 1881, Matthew Wehrly was the owner of M. Kleiser & Co. as the senior partner, the junior partner was Severin Heine.” Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks & Maker’s Marks George Chapman: 1885 – 51 Coney Street – George Chapman, Silversmith, Jeweller, Electro- plater, Gilder, Watchmaker (York) 1895 – 51 Coney Street – George Norman Chapman – Watchmaker, Clockmaker, Goldsmith, Jeweller, Chaser (White’s Directory) 2 Orlando Wright: 1885 – 53 Stonegate – Orlando Wright, Silversmith, Jeweller, Electro-plater, Gilder (York) 1895 – 29 Blake Street – Orlando Wright, Jeweller (White’s Directory) 1913 – Bland’s Court, Coney Street – Orlando Wright, Jeweller (Kelly’s Directory) J.C. However the land had an earlier association with aviation, when on 27 May 1933 it was used by an air circus. Up until WWII the airfield was managed by Yorkshire Air Services and Country Club Ltd., running a flying club and air taxi. In September 1939 the airfield was taken over by the RAF and used as a relief landing ground for RAF Linton-on-Ouse. Two months later it came under Army Co-orperation Command, and in August 1940, Westland Lysanders were stationed with 4 Squadron. In 1941 a complete RAF Station was built and accommodation for 500 personnel. Three runways were built for a Halifax heavy bomber repair unit (No. 48 Maintenance Unit). The airfield was badly damaged during a Luftwaffe airstrike in April 1942. In December 1942 169 Army Co-operation Squadron and 613 Squadron were based her, then between March and April 1943 the Fleet Air Arm used the airfield. It was then transferred to RAF Fighter command with 48MU remaining. Following the end of the war 48MU were tasked with stripping down over half of the remaining Halifax bombers which had been flown in from all across the country, this took two years. Although the RAF left in 1946, the airfield was not decommissioned. Yorkshire Aviation Services were to return, but closed in early 1950’s. In the 1980’s York Corporation sold the site for housing, and the Clifton Moor Retail Park built.
