Stuartfield and Crichie: an Historical Relationship - Which She Originally Presented During a Conference in the U.S.A
The Friends of the Book of Deer arranged their 32nd Seminar for the afternoon of Saturday the 24th September at 2 30pm in the Kemp Hall, Old Deer. Laura Dorantt ,a researcher currently working in Mintlaw library delivered her paper - Stuartfield and Crichie: an Historical Relationship - which she originally presented during a Conference in the U.S.A. The Conference was “ Dimensions of Political Ecology “ and the talk featured in the Rural –Urban Interfaces Session and was well received. “Between 1725 and 1850, some 450 planned villages were founded throughout Scotland of which 100 or so were built in the northeast. The planned village of Stuartfield is in the Buchan district of Aberdeenshire and is surrounded by the Crichie estate, which in the 21 st century continues as a working farm estate. The lands of Crichie and Dens have been owned and managed by the Burnett Stuart family since around 1700. The Mack Walks: Short Walks in Scotland Under 10 km Braes of Gight Circular (Aberdeenshire) Route Summary A very scenic walk through farmland and forest on the banks of the River Ythan in the depths of rural Aberdeenshire. Gight Castle is an interesting highlight of the route, as are the ancient broad-leafed woodlands that surround it. Be aware that you may encounter farm animals. Duration: 2 hours Route Overview Duration: 2 hours. Transport/Parking: Check Stagecoach service between Ellon and Methlick. Return walk from Methlick to walk start-point adds 6.5 km. Small fishers' car-park at start of walk. Length: 6.780 km / 4.24 mi Height Gain: 169 meter Height Loss: 169 meter Max Height: 93 meter Min Height: 28 meter Surface: Moderate. Generally good walking surfaces but some sections may be muddy after wet weather. Child Friendly: Yes, if children are used to walks of this distance and overall ascent. Difficulty: Medium to easy. Dog Friendly: Keep dogs on lead near to any cattle and sheep encountered. Pick up, bag and remove any mess! Refreshments: Can recommend the Ythanview Hotel in Methlick - good food and real ales. Description This is a very pleasant and scenic rural walk on the banks of the River Ythan, near Methlick. The main focal point on the route is the ruin of Gight Castle, ancestral home of the poet, Lord Byron, who spent some time there in his youth. The castle sits in isolation high above the river and has been abandoned for a very long time. It is unsafe to enter.

By ALEX. BREMNER, M.A., D.Sc, F.R.S.E. (Read 17th January, 1917.) THIS paper is a contribution towards the solution of one of the problems in the glacial geology of north-east Scotland, mentioned in a paper published in our Transactions (vol. x. p. 334), viz., the relations in space and time of the ice that distributed the red clays from Strathmore along the coasts of Kincardineshire and Aberdeenshire with that which brought the Upper Grey Boulder Clay. The latter we shall speak of in this paper as the Dee Valley Ice : the former we may call as before the Strath more Ice. In addition the paper may be interesting per se as a contribu tion to the study of the surface geology of a district to the solid geology of part of which special attention has been called in recent years. The area dealt with is bounded by the sea and a line drawn due west from Portlethen village to the Dee watershed, following the Dee watershed to the gap between Monluth and South Dennetys and passing thence southward to the Bervie Water at Milton of Dillivaird, along the Bervie to Drumlithie, and from that point straight back to the coast at Dunnottar Castle.
