Yackandandah Shines! Should there be doubt in anyone’s mind why Yack is such a great place to live and work?

We are blessed with wonderful, giving, talented people that help make Yack what it is. And how better to celebrate this than by recapping the news on our towns- people and their recent successes.

Fiona Jones was awarded and Peter Denahy, District’s Achievement Award on Australia Day. Fiona Golden Guitar Winner and tirelessly volunteers her time making a difference to Singer/Songwriter extraordinaire other people’s lives. She is a highly regarded and valued volunteer with the Yack Bush Nursing and has been instrumental in raising awareness and support services for cancer survivors. Fiona has been involved in many groups including Brave Hearts on the Murray & Dragon Fiona Jones, Yack & Boat Club, Breast Cancer Support Group and Network, District Achievement Lifeline, the Cancer Council and the Make a Wish Foun- Award Winner dation. Fiona has been described as a very humble person who works enormous hours to help achieve many resources for our community. Judy Davis, Yack’s newest Australian Peter Denahy, our great local musician, won his second Gold Guitar Award at the Tamworth Country Music Fes- tival last month - thus proving what we all know. 9 YACK SUSTAINABILITY & FOOD SWAP

The monthly Yackandandah Food Swap continues to go from strength to strength, and an increasing number of locals meet outside YCEN on the third Saturday of each month to share excess produce from their gardens, smallholdings and farms. Each month a wide range of fruit, vegetables, seeds or seedlings, olive oil, sprouts, cuttings, nuts, olives and a wide range of other garden produce is traded, including the occasional duckling or rooster! If you don’t have anything to swap you won’t Photos from top miss out - you’re welcome to make a donation to the left: value of the produce you choose. As some of you may be aware, Stephen and Amanda McInnes and their children - Ben, Max and Sarah will be shortly moving to Beechworth. We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to Steve for his dedica- tion to Yack Sustainability and various other community projects over a number of years. Steve has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of sustainability issues over a long period of time and most recently has been instru- mental in setting up and coordinating the very successful community food swap. We will miss his enthusiasm and organising skills but he is not far away and promises he will drop by regularly for a catch up at the community oven days. - Mish Croker

Yack Sustainability is very sad to say goodbye to Stephen McInnes, who has been the driving force of the organisation since its inception. Fortunately, we are not losing Stephen entirely as he makes the big trek up the hill to Beechworth, but Yack’s loss will very definitely be Beechworth’s gain, and we are sure that the Sustainabil- ity group up there will make good use of Stephen’s amazing organisational abilities and skills. Thank you, Stephen for all your time and effort over the past few years - from all your friends at Yack Sustainability. 10 YACKANDANDAH GARDEN CLUB NEWS The next meeting at the Senior Citizens Hall in Yack is on Thursday, 11 April 2013, at 7.30pm. Yackandandah Theatre Company 2013

Yackandandah Theatre Company is back in action for 2013 with two productions planned for this year.

The first production on 24th and 25th May will again be short plays written by some of our local writers. This is the same team that wrote and produced Strictly Local, Bite Size and, in 2012, the trio of plays, Ungraded, Eating Mangoes on the Moon and Morning! A second production is planned for early November - watch this space on more details!

New members are always welcome to fill the variety of roles on offer or to help out backstage. Our next meet- ing is at YCEN on Wednesday March 14th at 7 pm. We’ll be reading and selecting scripts for our May production. Auditions will follow soon after with rehearsals beginning in early April.

$1 million VBRA funding is being set up in a community foundation, covering local areas burnt in the horrendous bushfires of 2009.

This is being launched in March, and a warm invitation is issued to anyone wishing to at- tend. The funding is to be expended within ten years and is to cover community initia- tives in the affected communities and towns that helped service the fire effort during that terrible time.

The launch will be at the Savoy Club, Myrtleford on Tuesday, 12th March,

In fact, 8 students from Primary School will be the lucky first visitors to try out this centre when they visit our College this coming week.

At the VCE level, LASEC@BSC programs will address three key areas relating to light:

Approaching very quickly is our annual fundraiser, the BEECHWORTH EASTER FUN RUN/WALK. This is hap- pening on Easter Saturday, March 30th, starting at the College at 9am. There is over $2000 in prize money, so come along and get some exercise at the same time as supporting our College to provide even better facilities for your kids. Also happening this year, in October, is the 50th anniver- sary of the Beechworth High School/Secondary College. See the nearby flyer for details.

I hope your year is off to a flying start like ours and we look forward to many interactions with our wider College community in 2013.
