REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY JULY 1, 2017 - JUNE 30, 2018 AVAILABLE ANYTIME, A TRANSFORMATIONAL YEAR ANYWHERE It’s amazing what a makeover can do for one’s image. In October 2017, we transitioned from New Hampshire Public Television to New Hampshire PBS. Our mission has evolved over the years and now we are so much more than just television. We are on-air, online, in your classrooms and in your communities. We are in the business of offering one-of-a-kind experiences, telling stories and creating communities for learning. On any given day, our production team can be found hiking along the trails in the White Mountains with WINDOWS TO THE WILD host Willem Lange or setting up for a three-day shoot in Milford and asking residents to tell us their NH stories for the latest OUR HOMETOWN show. One of my favorite evenings this year was when renowned chef Jacques Pépin, came to LaBelle Winery for an evening of great food and wine. Over 100 new FIVE CHANNELS and old friends walked away with an experience that you just can’t get FOR EVERYONE anywhere else — and it was right here in Amherst! In March, our mailbox overflowed with hundreds of original stories from children all over the United States. And our hallways were abuzz with high school students ready to compete on our high school quiz show, GRANITE STATE CHALLENGE. There’s never a dull moment here at NHPBS. Our team may be small, but we are mighty. Looking ahead to our 60th anniversary in 2019, we will continue to build a strong public media organization that is essential for all of New Hampshire, and we’re looking forward to working with you towards a brighter future. -

Music on PBS: a History of Music Programming at a Community Radio Station
Music on PBS: A History of Music Programming at a Community Radio Station Rochelle Lade (BArts Monash, MArts RMIT) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2021 Abstract This historical case study explores the programs broadcast by Melbourne community radio station PBS from 1979 to 2019 and the way programming decisions were made. PBS has always been an unplaylisted, specialist music station. Decisions about what music is played are made by individual program announcers according to their own tastes, not through algorithms or by applying audience research, music sales rankings or other formal quantitative methods. These decisions are also shaped by the station’s status as a licenced community radio broadcaster. This licence category requires community access and participation in the station’s operations. Data was gathered from archives, in‐depth interviews and a quantitative analysis of programs broadcast over the four decades since PBS was founded in 1976. Based on a Bourdieusian approach to the field, a range of cultural intermediaries are identified. These are people who made and influenced programming decisions, including announcers, program managers, station managers, Board members and the programming committee. Being progressive requires change. This research has found an inherent tension between the station’s values of cooperative decision‐making and the broadcasting of progressive music. The organization’s mission is to present an unequaled array of programs of lasting value to Iowans regardless of where they live or what they can afford. Iowa PBS changed its name from Iowa Public Television (IPTV) in 2020. Iowa Public Television began in 1967 when the State Educational Radio and Television Facility Board was created and charged with developing a State network to broadcast educational programs. The Board was composed of nine members selected in the following manner: three members appointed by the State Board of Regents, three members appointed by the State Board of Education, and three members appointed by the Governor, with at least one member from a private four-year college or university. The Board’s name was changed in 1983 to the Iowa Public Broadcasting Board. The membership now includes: • Four citizen representatives appointed by the Governor, including representation from the business community, the television industry, and the Friends of Iowa PBS/Iowa PBS Foundation (see below). • Five members representing the private colleges and universities, the community colleges, the area education agencies, the Board of Regents, and the Board of Education. In 1982, the IPTV Foundation Board was established to solicit and manage gifts of money and property and to make grants and gifts to Iowa PBS. Also established around this time was Friends of IPTV, an organization established to solicit smaller donations from the general public to benefit Iowa PBS. -
