Biographical Sketch
Nicholas Joseph Thierry was born on December 2, 1938 in Budapest, Hungary. At the age of 8, Thierry moved with his family to Havana, Cuba, where he began to swim competitively. After high school, Nick moved to Canada, where he attended the University of Toronto and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture in 1964, while swimming competitively for the University. In 1961, in addition to his own competitive swimming, Thierry began coaching student swimmers from the University of Toronto as well as athletes from local swim clubs. Thierry served as an assistant coach at the University of Toronto for 21 years, while also playing a large role in the selection of swimmers for Canadian Olympic teams in 1964, 1968 and 1972, and serving as the head coach of the Canadian swim team for the 1970 Commonwealth Games. During his coaching career, Thierry oversaw a number of high-profile and successful swimmers including Angela Coughlan, Jim Shaw, Karen Le Gresley, Gaye Stratten, and Judy Garay.
Thierry’s coaching style was heavily influenced by International Swimming Hall of Fame coaches Stefan Hunyadfi, Peter Daland and Howard Firby, the later with which Thierry became close friends, corresponding regularly and travelling to numerous international competitions together.
Thierry also held several administrative positions for various Canadian swimming associations. He was the chairman and secretary for the Canadian Swimming Coaches Association (CSCA), and served on the Board of Directors for Swim Ontario and Swim Canada.
While Thierry was coaching he discovered the need to start tracking and compiling swimming statistics. To help facilitate the spread of swimmer’s statistical information, Thierry organized Swim Canada, a monthly publication that was later renamed Swim News. Officially started in 1974, Swim News carries both Canadian and international news, statistics, athlete and coach profiles, meet results, and articles on all aspects of competitive swimming. Thierry served as publisher, editor and writer for Swim News from 1974 to 2012. To make the publication as complete and thorough as possible, Thierry attempted to locate and record every available major swim meet worldwide, leading to the formation of the International Swimming Statisticians Association (ISSA) in 1986. Thierry’s travels saw him attend almost every type of swimming event in the world, from Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) meets, to the World Cup of Swimming and the Summer Olympic Games. While Thierry did much of the work himself for Swim News, he eventually realized the magazine needed a larger presence in the swimming community, employing photographer and friend Marco Chiesa to aid in Swim News’ online existence.
The statistics compiled and published in Swim News were supplemented by FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation) world rankings to give coaches, athletes, journalists and fans the ability to track all aspects of a swimmer’s career, making Swim News an invaluable resource for the swimming community. Early on, Thierry would often compile swim records and statistics manually, University of Toronto Archives
striving to ensure the quality and accuracy of the information published in Swim News. When computer software programs and electronic data transmission became available, Thierry began developing a database containing 40 years of swim rankings and statistics to ensure the spread of information across the sport.
While his work on swim rankings, records, results, and athlete biographies is his primary legacy, Thierry also had several interests outside of the swimming world; he was passionate about classical music and classical composers, and fine dining and the culinary arts took up much of his spare time away from the pool.1
Nick Thierry passed away on October 2, 2012 in Toronto, Ontario at the age of 73.
Scope and Content

The Nick Thierry fonds consists of 320 issues of Swim News (formerly Swim Canada) and research for articles contained within the magazine, various correspondence with people involved and interested in competitive swimming, a large amount of handwritten and typed results from numerous swim meets and events, and a series of letters collected from Thierry’s correspondence with Howard Firby, who served as the head coach of Canada’s swim teams during the 1964 Olympic Games and the 1966 Commonwealth Games. The fonds also contains bulletins published by the Canadian Swimming Coaches Association (CSCA), a number of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings from swimming events, Thierry’s collection of postcards and media passes to major swim meets, and the official binders issued to media members for the XI Commonwealth Games in Edmonton and XXI Olympics in Montreal. The material in the Thierry fonds has been divided into the following 7 series entitled; Swim News, Correspondence, Swim Meets: Results, Rankings and Guides, CSCA Bulletins, Swimming History Texts and Scrapbooks, Collected Memorabilia and Artifacts, and Photographs.
Notes The records in the Thierry fonds arrived with no clear order and have been placed into series largely based on the content of the material, but also on the function for which the material was used.

This series consists of 320 issues of Thierry’s monthly publication, Swim News. The series also contains a small amount of research in the form of print-outs, newspapers clippings and some correspondence used by Thierry and his team of writers to develop and publish articles for the magazine. The first part of the series is a nearly complete set of Swim News from 1974 to 2012. This series has been arranged in chronological order. This series consists of correspondence received by Nick Thierry from various people associated with swimming, both in Canada and internationally. A large portion of the correspondence is a set of letters collected by Thierry from prominent Canadian swim coach Howard Firby which Thierry kept in three large-ring binders. Much of the correspondence from Firby is in regards to his thoughts on the status of Canadian swimming and the coaching of amateur athletes, but a great deal of the later correspondence deals more with Firby and Thierry’s personal lives.
Access Restricted. The correspondence in boxes /012 and /013 between Howard Firby and Nick Thierry is restricted until 2021.

This series consists of Thierry’s handwritten and typed results for various swim meets. The competitions covered in this series include the Summer Olympics, World Championships, European Championships, Pan American Games, Pan Pacific Games, the Commonwealth Games, numerous Canadian university meets, age-group meets and provincial competitions. The series also includes files on national swim records from around the world, swimmer profiles, statistics and biographies, and world rankings – many of which have been compiled by Thierry. The series has been arranged chronologically by meet-type.

This series contains typed bulletins published by the Canadian Swimming Coaches Association. The bulletins contain information on the CSCA’s annual meetings and decisions, swim meet selection criteria, coaching techniques and standards, and Canadian swim club scoring and rankings. The bulletins have been arranged in chronological order. The bulletins were most likely accumulated by Thierry during his time as secretary and chairman for the CSCA.

This series contains texts written and sent to Thierry by J.G. Kelso, a Professor at the School of Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia. The texts are overviews of Canadian aquatic and swimming accomplishments, and provide an extensive history of swimming in Canada. The series also contains a number of scrapbooks compiled by Thierry which hold newspaper clippings. The clippings are all related to doping and the use of performance enhancing drugs in both Canadian and international sport.

This series contains several items collected by Thierry over his years attending and documenting swimming events. The series includes media event passes issued to Thierry for a variety of swim meets including the Summer Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games. The series also includes a collection of vintage and contemporary postcards commemorating the Olympic Games, as well as postcards of various swimmers. Some of the postcards have been autographed, including ones by Alexander Popov and Michael Phelps. Finally, the series contains 2 binders which held swimmer’s information for members of the media during the XI Commonwealth Games and the 1976 Summer Olympics.
