Vetrunner Page 5 FINAL RACE OF THE SEASON AT LAKE GINNINDERRA Over the years traditionally the last handicap race for the season has always been held over the Lake Ginninderra course. It was the same again in this the last year of the nineteen hundreds. However, this was the last in which the runners will meet at the lake to calculate the overall results in the pointscore tallies for both the longer Thomas Series and the shorter Frylink Series races. The year 2000 will see not only a change in venue but a change in the way the pointsore tallies are calculated with the introduction of a new system of pointscore awards to winners in each of the age groups for both the series. As the runners gathered at Lake Ginninderra for what turned out to be one of the best of the series 215 runners tackling the 7.6 and 3.5km courses. As usual there was a lot at stake for the athletes that were in contention for trophies, especially in the contest for the pointscore winners. There are of course rewards for the winners on the day with gold, silver and bronze medals up for grabs in both races. Quite often, as has happened in the past, the leading group in the overall pointscore table are predictable it is only in which order they finish. Runners with points under their belts are always in a much better position than runners who have to chase a sizable score on the last day. However, as it turned out there are individuals on the day that put in outstanding efforts and come right out of left field. There is always another tradition about the last day of the season is that it is always Pointscore winners well supported with regular attendances of Clockwise from the top left: over 200 over the past few seasons. Vetrunner Page 9 GORGEOUS EVENING FOR FINAL THROWING EVENT On a gorgeous twilight evening of Wednesday, 24 November, twenty-nine vets gathered at the Masson Street Throwing Fields for the final Monthly Throwing Handicap of the year. This month’s handicapped competition (the 96th) included a javelin and hammer throw. Although the weather was superb, the grass had grown so luxuriously over the previous month that it not only made it difficult to spot exactly where the implements landed it also provided places for hammers to hide. Narelle Blackaby and Peta Crawley came out for their second throwing handicap, and because they have now recorded throws in all four disciplines (shot, discus, hammer and javelin) they are eligible to earn points and hopefully win medals from their next competition onwards. George Mencik (the M65 Australian Record holder) made a welcome return from injury and it is hoped we will see more of Big George in 2000. Irene Mitchell (a former World Record holder for the W45 hammer) now living on the South Coast also made a rare appearance. If we gave out medals for bravery, tenacity or enthusiasm then Kathe O’Brien would have to be considered. Kathe had only recently come out of hospital following a major operation yet wanted to get in at least one hammer and one javelin throw in order to maintain her eligibility for next year’s point score competition. The best javelin throws of the evening, (keep in mind that different age groups use implements of different size and weight), were by Bob Banens (M50) 44.85m, Jayne Hardy (W35) 35.55, Ray Green (M55) The final throwing handicap of the season turned out to be a great night for 35.05, Ken Daniels (M60) 33.30, Bryan two W35s with both Tanya Colyer and Jayne Hardy picking up two awards Thomas (M55) 27.60, Jen Bourke 23.94 each. and Mary Wahren (W65) 20.25m. I am not going to say ‘where has the year gone?’ Because everyone is saying that and I haven’t heard a good answer yet. Soon it will be the long awaited and somewhat dreaded Year 2000. Your social committee is refraining from making any claims about bigger and better, because we feel we do a good job now. It is not that we won’t strive to continue to do a good job, it is just that we won’t make any promises we can’t keep. Thanks to all of you that attended the social functions during the year. This is very satisfying for the committee and makes it all worth while.
