Kitchen with free tea & coffee making facilities. UQ Sport Tennis Centre The UQ Tennis Club uses the courts at the UQ Sport Tennis Centre for all of its programs. The UQ Sport Tennis Centre is one of the best Tennis facilities in Queensland. It consists of 21 floodlit courts (4 Laykold Cushion, 15 Laykold and 2 Omnicourt). The UQ Tennis Club has a range of competitive and non-competitive Tennis programs designed to cater for players of all standards and with varying time commitments Non-Competitive Tennis (non-members welcome) SOCIAL TENNIS All standards welcome - Loan racquets available - Regular or occasional attendance Non-members welcome - Pre-booking not required - Check in on Clubhouse verandah Non-competitive - Doubles play only (eight-game sets) - Players rotated after each set Games organized to avoid mis-matches - Relax on the verandah between games Table tennis, snooker & TV available - Free tea & coffee - ‘The Smash Bar’ open THURSDAY NIGHT SOCIAL TENNIS 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. $13 for BNTA* Members & UQ Tennis Club Members and $17 for all others (cash only) N.B. There will be no Sunday Social Tennis on 21 & 28 July and 4 August (University Open Championships) Social Tennis is a great way to have a game in a relaxed and friendly environment without the pressure or commitment of Fixtures and Tournaments Non-Competitive Tennis (non-members welcome) PRACTICE SESSIONS 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday Nights Improve Your Game Drills are run on different courts, covering all aspects of the game including forehand, backhand, volley, serve and overhead. Players rotate through all the drills during the night. No pre-registration is necessary. Just check in on the night on the Clubhouse verandah. The cost is $8 per session for UQ Tennis Club members or $12 for non-members (cash only). Suitable for all levels - beginner to advanced. Courts are available after 10 p.m. for players wanting an extra hit (until 11 p.m.). This is not a coaching program but provides a great opportunity for players who are being coached to hit lots of balls. Fixtures are graded teams competitions played at a fixed time over many weeks. Fixtures are great for regular competition but players have to commit for a full season. Competitive Tennis (members only) TOURNAMENTS Playing in a tournament is a great way of getting a competitive game of Tennis. Most of the Club’s tournaments are participation-style tournaments (not knock-out events). Only the Annual Club Championships and the University of Queensland Championships use knock-out formats for all events. The University Open Championships use knock-out formats for the Australian Ranking Points events but include participation-style events for the ‘average’ player. All tournaments are part of the Club Grand Prix. BALL-BOY COl\IIPANY, headed by Eric Bergmark and Judy Barta, has virtually revolutionized the teaching of tennis through automation. The first innovation produced by this Company was the BALL-BOY itself, an auto­ matic ball throwing machine that will toss up to forty balls at one of three speeds, at any loft, at five second intervals. Soon to follow were the BALL-BOY "RETRIEVER" and "SERVER." Now, BALL-BOY has released a new item of value to teachers and students of tennis­ the "RE-BOUND-NET" (advertised below). This ingenius device allows the user a longer interval between strokes. The only way that it might be compared to a tennis "backboard" is that it returns balls hit against it. Unlike the back board in any other way, the RE-BOUND­ NET allows several seconds more for the student to prepare himself for the next stroke, without any reduction in ball velocity. "Adjustable tension controls" further add to the ver­ satility of this device. The RE-BOUND-NET may also be tilted at various angles to sim­ ulate a variety of shots. Zauner Redacted for Privacy ."--- Harry Freund The purpose of this research was to study the impact phenomena of a tennis ball striking a hard surface. Stroboscopic photography was used to collect the ball's impact images from seven angles of incidence, ranging from -23 degrees to -70 degrees with zero, top and back initial spin respectively. Through digitization, the image data were converted and calculated into the experimental parameters which were composed of the input/output of the translational and angular velocities, and into the system parameters which included the coefficient of restitution, coefficient of sliding friction, ball's dwell time, and ball's dwell distance. Mathematical models derived from both the differentiation and integration approach were developed to explore the impact phenomena. A -23 degree angle of incidence for the data sets (zero- spin, topspin, backspin) was selected to carry out the mathematical analysis using both experimental and system parameters. The results were: 1. The successive differentiation approach did not lend itself well to the investigation of tennis ball impact phenomena. 2. The successive integration approach based on the Damped Sin Pulse Model, could be used successfully to describe both the horizontal and vertical forces, velocities and positions of ball impact on a surface. 3. In the case of -23 degree incident angle, the effect of top-spin will produce a high value for the coefficient of restitution, which provides the ball a chance to rebound higher.
