Envisioning Cyborg Hybridity Through Performance Art: A Case Study of Stelarc and His Exploration of Humanity in the Digital Age Cara Hunt Advisors: Janet Gray & Ken Livingston Spring 2015 Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a major in the program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) ABSTRACT In this paper I argue that artistic representation has historically been and continues to be a valuable medium for envisioning new bodily forms and for raising important questions regarding changes in what it means to be human in an era of rapid technological advancement. I make this claim using Stelarc, an eccentric Australian performance artist, as a case study. Stelarc’s artistic exploration of the modern-day cyborg enacts and represents philosophical and ontological concepts such as identity, hybridity, and embodiment that are subject to change in the digital age. In order to arrive at this claim, Chapter 1 will trace the cyborg back to its use in 20th century Dada art. -

By CAROL KINO Published: March 10, 2010 ONE snowy night last month, as New Yorkers rushed home in advance of a coming blizzard, more than a hundred artists, scholars and curators crowded into the boardroom of the Museum of Modern Art to talk about performance art and how it can be preserved and exhibited. The event — the eighth in a series of private Performance Workshops that the museum has mounted in the last two years — would have been even more packed if it weren’t for the weather, said Klaus Biesenbach, one of its hosts and the newly appointed director of the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center. After seeing the R.S.V.P. list, he had “freaked out,” he said, and worried all day about overflow crowds. As it was, he and his co-host, Jenny Schlenzka, the assistant curator of performance art at the museum, were surrounded at the conference table by a Who’s Who of performance-art history, including Marina Abramovic, the 1970s performance goddess from Belgrade whose retrospective, “The Artist Is Present,” opens Sunday atMoMA; the much younger Tino Sehgal, whose latest show of “constructed situations,” as he terms them, just closed at the Guggenheim Museum; Joan Jonas, a conceptual and video art pioneer of the late 1960s who usually creates installations that mix performance with video, drawing and objects; and Alison Knowles, a founding member of the Fluxus movement who is known for infinitely repeatable events involving communal meals and foodstuffs. -

ART 1306 3D Design Section: 002 Meeting Times: By Appointment Semester: Spring 2017 Instructor: Sara Rastegarpouyani Office: Office Hours: Email Address: [email protected] 3D Design Module 1: Body The purpose of this assignment is to introduce students to innovative artistic strategies using the body as a medium. Historically, the figure was often depicted as a means to convey a humanistic vision of the world that included, beauty, sex, and emotion, as well as the vehicle for narrative storytelling (i.e., the Bible, epic literature etc.) In the contemporary era the body remains a potent image but can be understood in new ways through its absence. As opposed to its literal depiction, the body may be implied by gesture or suggestion, but not necessarily included physically. It may also be the artist’s medium itself, employed for performance or video based art. In this project, students may use, either literally or figuratively, the body, either in part or whole, as the means to communicate an idea. The body may be cast, sculpted additively or subtractively, imprinted, appropriated, or otherwise made present as the primary (but not necessarily only) component of the artwork. The relationship to the body should be autobiographical in some way, but this can be interpreted liberally. I WANT TO SEE HOW YOU SEE JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION April 16 – July 25, 2010 (Deichtorhallen Hamburg) The exhibition at the Hamburg’ Deichtorhallen will be the first extensive presentation of the JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION shown in the context of a museum worldwide. The exhibition, which will commence April 16, 2010, will feature 65 works by 54 artists from this very young private collection in a space extending of over 3,000 square meters. The main focus of the presentation will be on film and video works produced in the last 40 years, a time range which applies to the entire Julia Stoschek Collection. Classics of video art, such as Marina Abramović’s Art must be beautiful/ Artist must be beautiful dating from 1975-76, Vito Acconci’s Openings (1970) and Chris Burden’s Shoot (1971 are conjoined with more recent works of younger artists, giving viewers the opportunity to relate to the history of the still rather young genre of video art. The majority of the works were actually produced after 2000. They range from lyrical pieces such as Heike Baranowsky’s Mondfahrt and complex animation films such as Björk’s Wanderlust in 3D up to elaborate spatial installations by artists such as Monica Bonvicini, Anthony McCall, and Nathalie Djurberg. The video works are accompanied by sculptures (e.g., by Nandipha Mntambo), photographic works (e.g., by Thomas Demand, Taryn Simon, Thomas Ruff) and installations (e.g., by Jeppe Hein). The title of the exhibition I Want To See How You See was derived from the work in the show by Pipilotti Rist (2003) of the same name. -

Moving Marks Brooke Carlson Draw to Perform 3, live drawing performance symposium curated by Ram Samocha, The Crows Nest Gallery, London, July 30–31, 2016. he resurgence of drawing within contemporary art comes at a time in the digital age in which it is important to trace the traditions and conventions Tof what it means to draw. This resurgence is seen in recent museum exhi- bitions such as Drawing | THE BOTTOM LINE at S.M.A.K in Belgium (2015–16), annual festivals such as Drawing Now in Paris or The Big Draw in the UK, and in contemporary spaces such as Drawing Room, London (founded in 2002), specifically dedicated to the drawing discipline. Over the past few years, the per- formative aspect of drawing and the role of the body in the gesture has become increasingly prominent. Evidencing the physicality of the body in the drawing process has risen in response to the continually advancing digitalized and tech- nological versions of writing, drawing, and marking. By crossing over into the field of performance art, artists have begun to explore how far the gesture can be extended regarding method, process, materials, space, and duration. This investigation of performative drawing was highlighted at the international live drawing symposium Draw to Perform 3. Curated by Ram Samocha, an artist who specializes in performative explorations of drawing, the symposium opens up a platform for inquiry, experimentation, presentation, and discussion. From eighteen different countries, thirty-six artists with diverse practices and artistic backgrounds are drawn together to participate in the two-day event. The connec- tion between these artists is their constant query: “How can you make a mark and how can it be interpreted?” Organizing the event in two parts—a twelve-hour day of both short and long durational live performances, followed by a day of workshops mentored by six of the participating artists—the curator does nothing short of maximizing the opportunity for both artists and audiences to connect and share the experience of live drawing. -

Performance Paradigm 1 (March 2005) Performing In-Difference E-Interview Stelarc talks to Edward Scheer Edward Scheer: In part 10 of your manifesto, Parasite Visions, you point out the lack of physicality available to internet users and invoke the future of cybernetic corporeality with a combination of high-end equipment and the ageless figure of the phantom: 'As we hard-wire more high-fidelity image, sound, tactile and force-feedback sensation between bodies, then we begin to generate powerful phantom presences—not phantom as in ‘phantasmagorical’, but phantom as in ‘phantom limb sensation’. The sensation of the remote body sucked onto your skin and nerve endings, collapsing the psychological and spatial distance between bodies on the Net. Just as in the experience of a Phantom Limb with the amputee, bodies will generate phantom partners, not because of a lack, but as extending and enhancing addition to their physiology. Your aura will not be your own.' The ‘collapsing’ of the ‘distance between bodies on the Net’ recalls the idea that elsewhere you've called 'intimacy without proximity'. Might this be a solution to the very loss of interpersonal intimacy that some argue is a feature of the information age? Stelarc: Well, with the internet it's not so much a case of a lack of physicality at all, but an alternate kind of operational system which connects physical bodies and machines with physical bodies in other places. The reference to the phantom is therefore to that which can be generated by more haptic internet interfaces that will also include tactile and force feedback. -

These narratives concern (1) the development and implementation of reproductive technologies from the sonogram to in vitro fertilization to regenerative medicine, and (2) the expansion of a range of experimental performance practices in new media and bio art performance. The moments when these histories converge are marked by a series of performances by Deb Margolin, Critical Art Ensemble, Anna Furse, the Olimpias Performance Research Group, and the Tissue Culture and Art Project, and by a body of critical writings from the artists themselves and a group of performance scholars. This journey is also marked by strategic expeditions back into the 1960s to revisit and reinterpret foundational moments in the histories of feminist, activist, and new media performance.
