OUR OPINION Local elections set the right, cordial, tone Politics don’t have to feature mud-slinging, bickering, attack-filled campaigns. After months of being inundated with national com- mercials, that may be hard to believe. But it’s true and there’s no better example than our local elections. Both the general election and the primary earlier this year were full of cordial candidates that were way more likely to be standing side-by-side waving at passing cars from the Supervisor of Elections Office parking lot than to be attacking one another. That’s how it should be, both locally and nationally. Unfortunately, as the presidential race has shown, it often is not. So kudos to our local candidates for setting a good example for their national counterparts. And thanks for being a true representation of North Florida and the southern hospitality that exists here. Just as impressive as the tone surrounding our local races was the turnout by local voters. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done, for making the most of your freedom and getting out the vote. From the early onslaught of vote-by-mail ballots requested through the record-setting turnout to open early voting, it was clear that local voters were motivated to head to the polls. That continued Tuesday with another strong showing at local precincts for a total turnout of more than 33,000 ballots cast, just above 75% of those registered to vote, Family and friends matter more than stuff one of the highest turnouts on record locally. That outstanding showing at the polls to the model behavior of the candidates will make the 2020 election one we hope we never forget, for all the right reasons. It would increase the minimum wage to $10 an hour on Sept. 30, 2021, and then increase it by $1 each year until Sept. 30, 2026, when it would be $15 per hour. Currently, the minimum wage is $8.56. Florida would be the eighth state to adopt a $15 minimum wage. “This will help me a whole lot, I know it will,” said Gail Rogers, a 60-year old Ybor City resident who, after working at McDonalds for six years, said she earns $9.40 an hour. Rogers, a widow who resides in a rooming house for women, is a member of the nationwide group Fight for $15 and has routinely protested her low wages in recent years. “I can earn a little more cash. I can save more,” she said of the higher minimum wage. “I can save until I get to where I need to be at. I am not where I need to be at.” Amendment 2 faced heavy opposition from busi- ness groups. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis was quiet about where he stood on the pro- posed constitutional amend- ment until right before Election Day, when he issued a statement in which he said now is “not the time” to increase the minimum wage, warning that its passage would be bad for Florida businesses and the state. Meanwhile, about 57 percent of voters support- ed Amendment 3, which, if passed, would have eliminat- ed Florida’s closed prima- ry elections in state races. That was below the 60 per- cent threshold needed for approval. The proposed amend- ment would have allowed all registered voters to vote in primaries for state legis- lative seats, governor, and Cabinet seats, regardless of party affiliation. The two candidates who captured the most votes would have moved on to the general election under the proposal. In all, voters on Tuesday were asked to weigh in on six proposed constitutional amendments. Amendments can be pro- posed through citizens’ ini- tiatives, with certain restric- tions, including that the mea- sures be limited to single subjects and not misleading. Four of the six amendments on Tuesday’s ballot — Amendments 1, 2 and 3 and 4 — came through initiatives. Voters on Tuesday reject- ed an attempt to make it more difficult to amend the state Constitution in the future. Amendment 4 sought to require amendments to be approved by voters twice before taking effect. But it was receiving just 47 per- cent support Tuesday night. PREP FOOTBALL ANOTHER QB CHANGE Allen turns offense over to Peterson, who led comeback against North Miami Beach

By JORDAN KROEGER [email protected]

Three completions for three touchdowns was all Columbia coach Brian Allen needed to see. After Marcus Peterson led the Tigers to a 35-34 come-from-behind victory over North Miami Beach on Friday, Allen named the junior the start- ing quarterback for this week’s play-in playoff game against Englewood. It’ll be the first ever start behind center for Peterson, who’s started at receiver the past six games. Peterson was inserted in the fourth quarter against North Miami Beach with Columbia trailing 28-16. He had touchdown passes of 64 and 66 yards to Jaquez Redic and then a 59-yard game-winner to Tra’ Tolliver to deliver the Tigers their first win of the season. “He’s definitely a game changer,” Allen said. “We’re a different football team with him.” Peterson admitted he was a bit anxious when Allen delivered the news on Monday. But he’s excited as well. “I was a little nervous but I’ve got to step up to the plate,” Peterson said. “I’ve got to get the job done.” Peterson wasn’t even playing football a year ago, taking the season off after playing on junior varsity his freshman season. He’s had limited time in Allen’s system as well, not even playing in mid- dle school in Lake City. But even with only six varsity games under his belt, Allen is confident in the junior. By playing receiver all season, Peterson knows all of the pass- ing concepts and where the football needs to be. “I really feel like if you’re going to put a kid at that position from another position, a receiver is probably the better one to do it because they have to know all the routes and things that are going on,” Allen said. “So he’s caught on to that well.” Peterson is the sixth player to take snaps at quarterback for Columbia this season. Allen has cycled through Kade Jackson, Ty Wehinger and Bronsen Tillotson, along with Shyheim Brown and Tolliver in an option package. Jackson missed the last two games with an injury but returned to practice this week, while Tillotson CHS continued on 11A
