CAREER HIGHLIGHTS 1953- As a senior at Florence State Teachers College (now the University of North Alabama) in 1953, Hill caught only 12 passes for a ground-oriented, single-wing attack. Hill received small college All-America acclaim as an end and was later drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 15th round of the National Football League Draft. The Bears felt they could afford to wait unitl the late rounds to draft Hill because they knew very little about him the other NFL clubs knew even less.

1954- As a rookie for the Chicago Bears, Hill caught 45 passes for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns to lead the club in all three categories. His performance also helped take the Bears from a 3-8-1 record in 1953 to an 8-4 mark in 1954. On Oct. 31 in San Fransisco, Ca., Hill caught seven passes from quarterback for 214 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-27 win over the 49ers. Hill’s fourth TD catch of the day was a game-winning 66 yarder with only 33 seconds left in the game. The four TDs in a game still stand as a Bear’s club record. At the conclusion of the season, Hill was selected All-Pro, played in the Pro Bowl in Los Angeles for the West squad that won 26-19, and was chosen as the National Football League Rookie of the Year.

1955- In his second NFL season, Hill again led the Bears with 42 catches for the 789 yards and nine touchdowns and be- came the first recipient of the Jim Thorpe Trophy - symbolic of the National Football Leagues’s Most Valuable Player. He also captained the West in a 31-30 Pro Bowl victory and was again named All-Pro.

1956- With 47 catches for 1,128 yards and 11 touchdowns in 1956, Hill helped Chicago to a 9-2-1 record and a spot in the NFL Championship Game against the - where they were defeated 47-7. Hill was selected All-Pro for the third consecutive season and made his third straight Pro Bowl appearance as the West won again, 19-10.

1958- A severe ankle injury blunted the speed which had made Hill the NFL’s most feared deep receiver and eventually prompted a shift to . at 24.98 and career touchdowns with 40.

11 How the Winner is Selected

NOMINATIONS The nomination of players for the Harlon Hill Trophy and the voting on these players is conducted by the sports information directors at the 168 NCAA Division II schools which compete in football. Schools may nominate any player who has distinguished himself as being among the best players in the NCAA Division II during the current season. To insure national representation on the voting for the Harlon Hill Trophy balloting, voting is first conducted on regional basis within the four NCAA regions. Player nominations from the four Division II Super Regionals are sent to the Hill Voting Coordinator. They are then broken down into regions and are sent to the National Advisory Committee for review.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE MAKES THE FIRST CUT The Advisory Committee is comprised of SIDs from each region who have a long-time involvement with the Hill Trophy and who have been through the process before. The chairman of each regional advisory committee polls his members to determine who the top six players are from their respective region. Six players advance to the regional ballot. The regional selections are then forwarded to the Voting Coordinator, who updates biographies on each nominee and compiles the regional ballot.

REGIONAL VOTING The players who make the regional ballots are first voted on by the sports information directors in their region. These players are CANDIDATES for the award. SIDs vote on a first, second and third basis, with three points for a first-place vote, two points for a second-place vote and one point for a third-place vote. All votes are returned to the voting coordinator, who counts the votes. The top two selected in each region then move on to the national ballot.

NATIONAL VOTING The eight players selected for the national ballot are then voted on nationwide by all sports information directors at Division II football-playing institutions. These eight are the FINALISTS for the award. Statistics and biographies are again updated and are mailed nationwide. SIDs again vote on a first, second and third basis. The final vote count is compiled and kept secret until the presentation banquet. The top three vote-getters from that final voting are then invited to the Shoals for the Championship week activities. The voting is already completed at this point, but no vote totals are released until the actual presentation banquet. These players only know that they have finished among the top three, and the other five finalists must wait until the banquet to see where they placed. A total of 38 players were candidates for the 2015 Hill Trophy, with nine advancing to the national ballot.
