The rose color on this 3rd Sunday of Advent symbolizes In Christ’s peace, hope and joy! It is up to us to make these things happen! The coming of the Son of Man is indeed a reason for us to hope and to be filled joy! The vision of hope is truly Fr. Geoffrey inspiring, and it offers true spiritual joy! Hope is the un- derstanding and belief that a better world is possible! There is hope because of God’s love for us! When he sent his Son to us, he revealed a new life of hope and love. Do not take this invitation lightly...... but live your life with grace and thanksgiving. We need to rejoice and not to be caught up in a life that is destructive and mis- erable. We should bring smile to the people and be the bearer of good news and joy.

Simbang Gabi Ministry keeps holiday tradition alive

(Photo inset: Aida Torres, director of Simbang Gabi Ministry)

What is Simbang Gabi? Simbang Gabi, or Advent Dawn Mass, is a much-revered Filipino tradition observed during the Christmas season. It consists of a novena of Masses from Dec. 16 to 24, celebrated in the very early hours of the morning. It is adapted from the Catholic Misa de Gallo, literally “Mass of the Rooster,” so-called because it is held when the rooster crows. It is said that the practice of the dawn Masses has its roots in Mexico: in the 16th century, a friar in Acolman, Mexico asked permission from Pope Sixtus V to hold Masses outdoors to accommodate the churchgoers. The Pope agreed, and also decreed that the pre-dawn Masses be held in the starting Dec. 16. This gave the Filipino farmers a chance to hear Mass before setting out to work in the fields. Church bells would ring, sometimes as early as 3:00 in the morning, to summon everyone to Simbang Gabi. And thus, a tradi- tion was born.
