3 the BUILDING
At 141 - 143 Egelantiersstraat is a historic building with royal appeal: Koning Willemshuis. Upon the initiative of a reverend in the late 19th century, the building was erected as a meeting place for the people, and gets its name from the kings of the House of Orange.
After serving several purposes, it will now accommodate five luxury turn-key apartments. Four lofts and one penthouse, ranging in size from 153 to 192 sqm. The spaces are tall, bright and have international appeal. Its gardens and balconies are quiet havens amidst the hustle and bustle of Jordaan district.
Under the supervision of monument architect Hans Vlaardingerbroek, the building was transformed and restored - from an office complex into a residential building with historic character. He has safeguarded a transformation that preserves original features. The monumental staircases and commanding arched windows were renovated and lend the building character. Despite its historic facade, the building offers contemporary comfort, incorporating modern materials such as large steel window fronts.
4 CHARACTERISTIC ARCHITECTURE
5 the HISTORY
Listed national monument IN A WORKING-CLASS NEIGHBORHOOD
The population of Jordaan district spiked dramatically in the 19th century. The Industrial Revolution was drawing people away from the countryside and into the city for work. However, there was a downside to this influx: the enormous number of people settling here and their growing families meant that living conditions deteriorated rapidly. Jordaan became overpopulated, and was engulfed by poverty and disease. Alcohol abuse also ran rampant here.

People’s Society In 1860, Reverend Carel Steven Adama van Scheltema brought change. He was a fierce advocate for abstinence and devised a plan to reduce alcohol abuse and promote a peaceful family life. One part of his plan was to build a community center for the people. A place where adults could learn to read and write, and children were kept occupied with drawing and crafts. This was meant to shield people from the temptation to spend the last of their last money on alcohol. The tea, coffee and soup that was served in the ‘currant bread’ church was free.
Squalor became a definitive thing of the past in the neighbourhood in the late 1960s. The area was discovered by artists, students and young entrepreneurs. The arrival of this new group of residents transformed Jordaan into a neighbour- hood with a rich selection of shops, sidewalk cafes, excellent restaurants, (gastro) bars and markets - all just around the corner from Koning Willemshuis.
Historic facade There are two years on the building’s facade. 1813 refers to the year of The 04 Netherlands’ independence and the crowning of Willem I. The first brick, however, was laid in 1863, the national holiday in honour of the liberation from the French. The building was named Koning Willemshuis, after the three House of Orange kings who had ruled over the country in freedom. Koning Willemshuis was designed in the 19th century by architect Johannes van Maurik, the same architect who was responsible for the main Artis building. Koning Willemshuis showcases six monumental windows on the ground floor and seven arcade windows in arched niches on the first floor.
7 8 the AREA
While Jordaan is abuzz and teeming, Egelantiersstraat is a quiet haven. From Koning Willemshuis, it’s just a two-minute walk to Tweede Egelantiersdwarsstraat. A street with delis, shops, coffee bars, cafes and restaurants. Westerstraat is down the street: home to grocery stores, boutiques and restaurants.
Every Saturday, the square out front of Noorderkerk church is the backdrop for the Boerenmarkt, the Netherlands’ first organic farmer’s market. And on Mondays, it hosts the flea market, with a wide selection of knickknacks and vintage products. Around the corner, on Westerstraat, there is a cloth market on Mondays and yet another nearby market is on Lindengracht, every Saturday.
The Movies, Amsterdam’s oldest cinema, is on Haarlemmerdijk - a shopping street with a varied range of shops. Het Marnix is also within walking distance: a swimming pool, fitness center and spa, all under one roof. All in all, Jordaan has managed to retain its original character in this spot. Connectivity by public transportation is excellent, and parking will also become easier in the future. A parking garage will be built on nearby Singelgracht.
