This year the lunch will celebrate the epic 57th anniversary of the 1957 Davis Cup victory against the US played at centre court Kooyong in December 1957. Don Bradman, for example, was also the South Australian squash champion and a scratch golfer; Test fast bowler Ray Lindwall also played first grade rugby league in NSW and was a top sprinter. Western Australians who were multi-disciplinary champions include Keith Slater, who played Test cricket and football, cricket and baseball for WA, Derek Chadwick who played football and cricket with distinction for WA, and Rick Charlesworth, an Olympic hockey player and also a State cricketer. Fremantle all-rounders of note include John Baguley, who was an Olympic long and triple-jumper, played rugby for WA and league football for East Fremantle, and Merv Cowan who was captain of the Fremantle A Grade cricket team and the East Fremantle League football team, a State water polo player and State breaststroke swimming champion. The phenomenon is easily understood.     The Australian Davis Cup Tennis Foundation News Produced for Members of the Foundation ABN 90 004 905 060 October 2015 Britain defeats Australia in Davis Cup Semi-Final Congratulations to the British Davis Cup team led by Andy Murray which defeated Australia 3-2 in a hard fought match in Glasgow from 17-19 September. Murray won both his singles and teamed with his brother John to edge out Groth and Hewitt in five sets in the crucial doubles rubber. Murray received fantastic support from the 8000 strong crowd which was also appreciative of Lleyton Hewitt playing in what was to be his final Davis Cup match. The Australian team showed great fighting spirit and camaraderie and, with the recall of Kyrgios, will be a force to be reckoned with in Davis Cup in the next few years. It is anticipated that Hewitt will take over from Masur as Captain in 2016. Page !1 Around the traps…… Put up your hand if someone has taken your seat! Australian Captain Wally Masur is giving Sam Groth a go as Captain during Kokkinakis’ dead rubber so that he can have a chat with mate Pat Cash. I’ll continue to work hard and be your voice in Federal Parliament and this Coalition Government has real plans to make our nation stronger and to better support you, your family, business and community. What it means to be Australian In the lead-up to Australia Day this week, I’ve found myself contemplating what it means to be Australian. Australian citizenship should be cherished and entering, or remaining, in Australia is a privilege. 1 We need to strengthen citizenship laws so they better align with Australian values. That’s why I strongly support a tougher citizenship test that would strengthen character requirements for any new potential Australian following concerns that Australia’s short-term visa pathways could be exploited by terrorists seeking access to our country. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has also flagged other reforms for consideration, including dropping the age at which good character provisions apply for citizenship from 18 to 16 years. If young people are breaking the law, I don’t think they deserve to part of our society. At the end of the day, we have secure borders that are envied by most European countries because of this government’s strong stance on border protection. These reforms are really about making sure Australia remains safe and I strongly support any move by this government to make our citizenship rules more robust a priority when we head back to Canberra next month.
