Summer Reading list attached below. 7th & 8th Grades Summer Reading Challenge Our Lady of the Angels Mr. Barrett In addition to enjoying the great outdoors this summer, I also hope you always have a good book you are reading. People have shared stories since the dawn of humankind. Stories bring people together. They provoke laughter, tears, awe, understanding and empathy. Our minds are stretched; our hearts are enlarged. We are transformed! You are required to read at least four books this summer. You may read any age-appropriate book. The attached lists of book titles are recommendations from your peers. These are books that boys and girls your age have enjoyed, so I encourage you to read through the list to find books that may interest you. However, you do not need to read books from these lists only. Find books that you enjoy reading! Over the years, I have had many students who have read over twenty books during the summer. Challenge yourself! See how many you can read! You are required to keep a Reading Log. After you finish a book, write down the title and author and number of pages in the book. Keep track of all the books you read on this log, have a parent sign the bottom of the list at the end of the summer, and bring it with you on the first day of school. We will record the number of books you read on our class Reading Log and you will be asked to tell us about the book you enjoyed the most! “I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book.” Groucho Marx Here is an annotated list of book titles recommended by the 8th grade for your summer reading pleasure. Maze Runner series, James Dashner Teenagers are picked at random to be lab rats in a government project. They enter a place called the Glade and must find the exit of the government-made maze. Everything changes when a 16 year old boy named Thomas enters the Glade. Stormbreaker: Alex Rider Series, Anthony Horowitz The book begins with Alex Rider learning of the death of his uncle and adopted parent, Ian Rider. Alex digs a little deeper and unexpectedly finds out a surprise about his uncle that leads him on an exciting new path. Terry Francona: The Red Sox Years, Terry Francona and Dan Shaughnessy For Terry Francona, 2011 was a momentous season in both good and bad senses. In July, the Red Sox manager notched his 1000th victory; in September, he presided over one of the worst team collapses in major league history. Despite his stunning e previous success with the team including the "Curse of the Bambino" ending world championship in 2004, Boston owners declined to renew his contract. Francona lived to lead again; in fact, last year he garnered Manager of the Year honors with the Cleveland Indians; but the Red Sox years remain the most scrutinized part of his baseball career. The Darkest Path, Jeff Hirsch The Darkest Path follows Callum Roe, a sixteen year old growing up in the midst of a second American Civil War. Cal and his brother James were kidnapped by The Army of the Glorious Path in the early days of the war and forced to work in service of the revolution. Cirque Du Freak series, Darren Shan Darren and his friend Steve — both fascinated by the macabre — sneak out of their houses to attend an "underground" freak show, Cirque Du Freak. Steve secretly confronts the man and asks to be his apprentice. Darren, who is obsessed with spiders, uses the conversation he's overheard to steal the spider (Madam Octa) and blackmail Mr. Crepsley, who is a vampire. What happens next sets Darren and Steve on a fantastical journey. Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie, Jordan Sonnenblick Thirteen-year-old Steven has a totally normal life: he plays drums in the All-Star Jazz band, has a crush on a pretty girl in school, and is constantly annoyed by his five-year-old brother, Jeffrey. But when Jeffrey is diagnosed with leukemia, Steven's world is turned upside down. He is forced to deal with his brother's illness and his parents' attempts to keep the family in one piece. The book is funny and poignant. After ever After, Jordan Sonnenblick Sequel to Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie Heat, Mike Lupica This book is for young adults who enjoy reading about sports and have an understanding of baseball. Divergent, Veronica Roth Set in a futuristic dystopia where society is divided into five factions each representing a different virtue, teenagers have to decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another - for the rest of their lives. Before I Fall, Lauren Olivier Samantha Kingston has it all: the world's most crush-worthy boyfriend, three amazing best friends, and first pick of everything at Thomas Jefferson High—from the best table in the cafeteria to the choicest parking spot. Reliving her last day during one miraculous week, she will untangle the mystery surrounding her death—and discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing. Pretty Little Liars Series, Sara Sheperd Sara Shepard, Aria Montgomery, Emily Fields, Hanna Marin, and Spencer Hasting, whose clique falls apart after the disappearance of their leader, Alison DiLaurentis. Three years later, they begin receiving text messages from an anonymous source, "A," who threatens to expose their secrets. H.I.V.E series, Mark Walden H.I.V.E. is a top secret school hidden inside a still active volcano. The school is a part of G.L.O.V.E., the Global League of Villainous Enterprises, and was built for the purpose of training children to become criminal masterminds. He is charming and witty. Augustus has had osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, but has recently had the all-clear. Hazel and Augustus embark on a roller coaster ride of emotions, including love, sadness, and deep friendship, while searching for the author of their favorite book. Funny and poignant.
