Press release Comrade of Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard when all three were studying art, Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was a painter and major theoretician of modern French art at the turn of the 20th century. This show – the first dedicated to the artist in Switzerland in 50 years – focuses on the early years of Denis’s career. The novel visual experiments of the “Nabi of the beautiful icons” gave way to the serene splendor of the symbolist works, followed by the bold decision to return to classicism. This event, which features nearly 90 works, is organised with the exceptional support of the Musée d'Orsay and thanks to loans from Europe and the United States. Maurice Denis remains famous for the watchword he devised in 1890, “Remember that a painting – before being a warhorse, a nude woman, or some anecdote or other – is basically a plane surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order.” Beyond this manifesto, the breadth and depth of his pictorial output make clear the ambitions of a life completely devoted to art, love, and spirituality. -

It will be the first major exhibition of Australian art to visit South East Asia for many years. I believe very strongly that Australia and our South East Asian neighbours have an enormous amount to share with each other. This exhibition will give a strong indication of contemporary Australian artistic currents and concerns. At the same time, it will demonstrate the depth of Australia's interest in developing contacts with and learning more about the rich and vivid contemporary cultures of our neighbours. I congratulate westpac Banking corporation on sponsoring the exhibition, and the Australia council and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on supporting it. It is my strong hope that Art from Australia will prove to be the first of many new ventures exchanging art and artists between Australia and South East Asia. To fill this void, the article focuses on unveiling the commitments and libertarian creeds of artists of the symbolist nebula at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century; namely, Paul Gauguin, the group of the Nabis and Joséphin Péladan. We mentioned that the painting was publicly shown in 2003 at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor, NY as Reclining Woman with Swans and Thistles in the exhibition La Belle Epoque and Toulouse Lautrec. In that exhibition’s catalog, the painting was attributed to the French artist Paul Ranson (1864–1909), but that attribution has been questioned. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Alexandra Nelson April 7, 2016 Communications Director 212-254-4710 ext. 19 [email protected] Dürer Master Engravings & Prints From the Belle Époque Feature in Swann Galleries’ Old Master Through Modern Prints Auction New York— On Thursday, April 28, Swann Galleries will hold an auction of Old Master Through Modern Prints, featuring A Collector’s Vision: Works on Paper from the Belle Époque & Beyond. The two-part auction begins with A Collector’s Vision, 110 lots from a private collection featuring many 19th-century French prints, such as Paul Ranson’s Tigre dans les Jungles, an 1893 color lithograph (estimate $15,000 to $20,000). Works by Nabi artists Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard are also part of this collection, including Bonnard’s 1899 color lithograph Rue, le Soir, sous la Pluie ($10,000 to $15,000); and Vuillard’s 1893 color lithograph La Sieste ou La Convalescence ($3,000 to $5,000). Works by Henri Matisse, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and many other important artists are also included, like Toulouse-Lautrec’s Programme pour l’Argent, an 1895 color lithograph ($8,000 to $12,000). The second portion of the auction provides a vast selection of works by old masters and more. Headlining this portion of the sale is Albrecht Dürer’s 1514 engraving St. Jerome in his Study. Rife with visual metaphors and religious imagery, this print is estimated at $120,000 to $180,000. St. Jerome in his Study is considered one of three meisterstiche (master engravings) by the artist; another of the meisterstiche, the 1513 engraving The Knight, Death and the Devil, also included in the sale, is estimated at $80,000 to $120,000. -
