THE GREAT BLUFF Freight wagons ascend the the Great Bluff on the Thompson River eight miles above Spences Bridge. This photograph shows the poles and wires of the the Collins Overland Telegraph, an ambitious attempt to lay an electric telegraph line from San Francisco, California to Moscow, Russia. Dress for the officers was a scarlet tunic with dark blue trousers featuring a scarlet strip along the seams; yellow cord on the shoulder straps, collar and sleeve cuffs; blue collar and cuffs; yellow cord on the shoulder straps, collar and sleeve cuffs; blue collar and cuffs; blue pill-box with a yellow band and red piping; and a buff white belt. The sappers wore grey shirts with their uniform. A wall of rock has been breached and a cleft is being cribbed and filled as horses drag heavy logs from below the limber-line on "goboy" skids or sleds. Sappers and Chinese toil in the background. The Cariboo Wagon Road
THE CARIBOO WAGON ROAD he success of the Cariboo goldfields necessitated the further Timprovement of the roads to the Cariboo. In May 1862, Colonel Richard C. Moody advised Governor James Douglas that the Yale to Cariboo route through the Fraser Canyon was the best to adapt for the general development of the country and that it was imperative its construction start at once. The governor concurred and it was decided that the road would be a full 18-feet wide in order to accommodate wagons going and coming from the goldfields and thus it came to be known as the Cariboo Wagon Road. The builders were to be paid large cash subsidies as work progressed and upon completion of their sections were to be granted permission to collect tolls from the travelers for the following 5 years. Captain John Marshall Grant of the Royal Engineers, with a force of sappers, miners, and civilian labor, was to construct the first six miles out of Yale, while Thomas Spence was to extend the road the next seven miles to Chapman’s Bar, at a cost of $47,000. From here, Joseph William Trutch, Spence’s partner, was to tackle the section to a point that would become Boston Bar, a distance of 12 miles, at a cost of $75,000. From here, Spence would continue the road to Lytton. Walter Moberly, a successful engineer, with Charles Oppenheimer, a partner in the great mercantile firm ROYAL ENGINEER'S BUCKLE & BUTTONS. Lewis accepted the challenge to build the section from Lytton until the road joined a junction with the wagon road to be built by Gustavus Blin Wright and John Colin Calbreath from Lillooet to Watson’s stopping house. -

Museum Corner: A Page From History May 2019: The British Columbia Express Company Stage line and Stagecoach Francis Barnard originally started the stage line in 1862 during the early Gold Rush days, after he was awarded the Government Postal Contract. He bought a small mule, loaded the mail and the express on its back, and led it up the trail to the Cariboo. He called his stage line the “Barnard Express Company”, also known as B.X Co. Shortly after, this stage line began to grow to ser- vice routes covering nearly the entire interior of British Columbia. In 1864 with the wagon road being just completed, this al- lowed Barnard to expand his business to a stagecoach company. Barnard established his business headquarters in Yale as it was more central and catered to a large portion of the travelling Gold Rush miners from the coast to Barkerville. This same year, Barnard went into partnership with Stephen Tingley and James Hamilton, who were both skilled stagecoach drivers. This partnership lasted for many years, and in 1871, a private Bill was passed by the B.C Legislature incorporating the Express Company, where Barnard held one half interest and Tingley and Hamilton one quarter each. Years later, James Hamilton passed away, and his interest in the B.X Co. was distributed to Barnard and Tingley. Then in 1886, Barnard wanted to get out of the stagecoach business because he felt that with the coming of the railroad the days of stage- coaches were numbered. Barnard went on to pursue a political career, while Tingley took over the famous stagecoach compa- ny, and changed its name to B.C Express Co. -

The Story of Cascade Lodge No. 10 RW Bro. James G. Bennie, Lodge Southern Cross No. 44, Vancouver It was once said to be the largest town west of Chicago and north of San Francisco—bigger than Victoria and New Westminster. It was born of gold fever, and had its own Masonic Lodge. No, it’s not Barkerville. It’s Yale. Most BC Masons likely know that Kamloops Lodge is No. 10 and Cascade Lodge in Vancouver is No. 12. Those who have leafed through the History of the Grand Lodge of British Columbia will have learned a short-lived lodge was warranted in 1881 for the town of Yale on the Fraser River to be called ‘Cascade’. It was given number ‘10’ on the Register, but the warrant was forfeited. The History regurgitates a short story on the lodge written by MW Bro. Robie L. Reid in his Historical Notes and Biographical Sketches. This is an attempt to fill in some blanks about the first lodge warranted by our Grand Lodge. The Grand Lodge returns for 1882 reveal the lodge met on the second Tuesday of each month and had 15 members, as follows: Alexander Lindsay, WM William Dodd Issac Oppenheimer, SW Joshua Deer Frickelton Benjamin Douglas, JW Thomas William Gray William Teague, Secretary Ernest Barron Chandler Hanington Richard Deighton, Treasurer Henry Hoy John Allison Edward Pearson Walter Edward Blackett Henry Pressey Stephen Tingley The Yale listing in the British Columbia Directory for 1882-83 has a bit more information. It lists Pressey as the Tyler, though the returns say no other officers than those mentioned above had been selected.
