BROWN BOASTS CAREER-HIGH RANKING AGAINST MATHIEU

DAY 2 PREVIEW: Known the world over for his dreadlocks and hot shots, 31-year-old Dustin Brown is attracting acclaim this week for a different reason. After playing in the 15th ATP Challenger Tour final of his 15-year career on Sunday, Brown is a career-high No. 68 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. That’s one spot higher than his opponent in the first round of the Moselle Open, Paul-Henri Mathieu of France. Mathieu enters Metz a happy man as well, having married his longtime girlfriend Quiterie Camus on September 10.

The 34-year-old Mathieu is one of 10 Frenchmen in the Moselle Open singles draw, four of whom are on Tuesday’s order of play. Seventh-seeded Benoit Paire meets 162nd-ranked qualifier Vincent Millot in an All-French first-round match. Paire enjoyed a breakout season in 2015, winning five titles in eight finals across the ATP World Tour, ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Futures Circuit. Playing exclusively at tour-level events in 2016, the 27-year-old has yet to reach a final and fallen from a career-high No. 18 on January 11 to No. 38 this week. Paire has suffered four losses this season to opponents ranked outside of the Top 100.

Also on Court Patrice Dominguez, French qualifier Gregoire Barrere meets fellow qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia. Barrere is seeking the first tour-level victory of his career after losing his debut to as a wild card at Roland Garros. Spanish veterans Nicolas Almagro and Guillermo Garcia- Lopez round out Tuesday’s singles schedule against Peter Gojowczyk and Damir Dzumhur respectively. Dzumhur, 24, is 21-19 on the ATP World Tour this season. He entered 2016 with a 17-20 career record.

World No. 10 Dominic Thiem and former Top 10 player Jurgen Melzer will team up in doubles against and on Court 1. Thiem, who looked up to Melzer growing up, lost to his 35- year-old countryman in the Kitzbühel second round on July 20. The Austrians have never been partners before and required a wild card to play together this week. Thiem is the No. 1 seed in singles and will open against Almagro or Gojowczyk in the second round. Melzer is only playing doubles at the Moselle Open.
