    SHARING CONSERVATION DECISIONS (1146–1173 CE), was the builder of the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. All three temples were planned and created through a deliberate act of royal will in the heartland of the Chola Empire. Thanjavur lies about 322 km to the southwest of Chennai, while Gangaikondacholapuram is about 85 km from Thanjavur to the northeast. Darasuram lies midway between these two temple towns, approximately 40 km east of Thanjavur. The temples have been in use for the last thousand years and follow established traditions – religious, ritual, cultural and social – which have been integrated into the everyday life of the people. Together, these three temples have been inscribed onto the World Heritage list as the Great Living Chola Temples (Figure 1). History of the Great Living Chola Temples The three Chola Temples are architectural masterpieces of southern Indian (Dravidian) architecture. An integral part of these structures is their rich decoration with sculpture works representing the finest artistic tradition of the Cholas. The Thanjavur Temple is further embellished with fresco paintings. Constructed within a time span of 150 years, all three sites display similarities as well as differences. The three centres were consecrated as places of religious worship with a well-defined practice of ritual and worship that is still fol- lowed to this day. The temples were constructed by the Cholas in their capital cities and were endowed with land grants for their upkeep and mainte- nance. Introduction The Cholas of the Tanjore line, also known as the Imperial Cholas ruled over most of South India for about four centuries ie, 875 -1175 AD. The political and ceremonial centre of the Cholas was Thanjavur (Tanjai). The Cholas linked themselves to the Solar dynasty. The Cholas conquered parts of the Gujarat, Malwa, Deccan and Indonesia, Lakshadweep, Maldives and Sri Lanka in entirety. Bay of Bengal came to be known as the ‘Chola Lake’ as they dominated the area with their powerful navy. The entire coast from Kanyakumari to Bengal came to be captioned ‘Cholamandalam’. Coramandal is the anglicised name of Cholamandalam. It is also noteworthy that they dominated the other two seas. Owing to the Chola rule, during this period, there was remarkable political stability in South India.

The ceremony was held after the Madras High Court settled an old argument over the ritual. The ceremony got embroiled in the struggle for supremacy between the Sanskrit and Tamil traditions. The court allowed the consecration to be performed in both Tamil and Sanskrit. It argued that there is nothing either in the Agamas (canonical texts) or in any other religious script to prohibit the chanting of Tamil mantras in the temples. Brihadeshwara Temple Brihadeshwara Temple, also known as Raja Rajeswara Temple, is dedicated to Shiva and is located in Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu). Thanjavur lies in the delta of the Cauvery River. It is one of the best examples of the Dravidian style of temple architecture built by Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola I ( 985-1014 AD) between 1003 AD and 1010 AD. The Dravidian style of temple architecture flourished roughly from the 8th century to about the 13-14 century AD. The temple consists of a pyramidal spire and is adorned with sculptures and paintings inside as well as outside. 1/3 The temple entered the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1987 and is also a part of "Great Living Chola Temples" along with the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikondacholapuram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. RajarajaChola I and his son RajendraChola who built temples such as the Brihadeshvara temple of Thanjavur and Brihadeshvara temple of GangaikondaCholapuram, the Airavatesvara temple of Darasuram and the Sarabeswara (Shiva) temple at Thirubhuvanam.1 These temples are titled Great Living Chola Temples among the UNESCO world Heritage sites.
