We began by reviewing the characteristics regarding gender structure, and both genders (BG), followed by the male population (M) and the female population (F), as well as the age groups, beginning with young people (0-19 years), adults (20-59 years) and ending with the elderly, over 60 years. Moreover, for a clearer view of the male to female population ratio, we employed the most suggestive indicator, the feminity index. Key words: population, male, female, age groups, 2011 Census, * * * * * * INTRODUCTION This study represents our second scientific endeavour into population dynamics, specifically the gender and age group structure registered at the 2011 Census, the first having been written for Harghita County (Tofan et al., 2016). In a similar fashion, in order to view the evolution of these two geodemographic components, we employed statistical data from the 2011 Population and Household Census, information provided by the National Institute for Statistics (table 3), and by the Covasna County Statistics Office. 1 2 After completing the process of data collection, we moved on to processing, interpreting, and creating a tabular, graphic and cartographic representation of them, thus enabling the possibility to Corresponding Author 1 http://www.recensamantromania.ro/rezultate-2 2 http://www.covasna.insse.ro http://istgeorelint.uoradea.ro/Reviste/Anale/anale.htm 244 George-Bogdan TOFAN, Adrian NIŢĂ, Bogdan-Nicolae PĂCURAR follow the issues much easier. When it comes to this geodemographic indicator, we must point out the fact that some areas of Covasna County have already been studied in prior papers (Niță, 2007, 2010). There is also the monography of Covasna, found in Romania's Counties Collection, published by the Romanian Academy Publishing House (Pişotă et al., 1975), as well as a series of studies by Algasovschi, 1980; Herman, 2009; Ilieş & Staşac, 2000; Lăcătușu, 2008; Pop et al., 1973; Pop, 2002; Pop et al., 2015; Tofan et al., 2014; Tofan, 2015 and two methodological guidebooks written by Vert, 1995, 2001. GENDER AND AGE GROUP STRUCTURE OF THE POPULATION OF COVASNA COUNTY, AT LOCAL ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT 2 LEVEL In Covasna County, out of a total of 210 177 inhabitants registered at the 2011 Census, 49.22% (103 454 people) were male, while 50.78% (106 723 people) were female. Figure 1. The age pyramid of Covasna County, in 2011 Both genders of the population of Covasna a) The 0-19 years age group had an average percentage of 22.79% (47 893 inhabitants out of 210 177), however registering extremely different absolute and relative values at the lowest existing local level. Therefore, values around the average (22.79%), meaning 21-23%, were recorded in 12 units, one urban (Baraolt), and the rest rural (Aita Mare, Breţcu, Catalina, Comandău, Dalnic, Ojdula, Ozun, Poian, Reci, Sânzieni, and Zăbala). The higher echelon, 23- 25%, characterized only seven communes: Bixad, Dobârlău, Ghelinţa, Ghidfalău, Moacşa, Valea Mare, and Zagon, followed by the category that comprises values above 25%, found in 11 communes (Barcani, Băţani, Belin, Bodoc, Boroşneu Mare, Brăduţ, Estelnic, Hăghig, Sita Buzăului, Vâlcele, and Valea Crişului) and a town (Întorsura Buzăului). The lowest values, below 21%, were registered in 14 areas, such as Malnaş (18.58%). b) The 20-59 years age group held the vast majority, 56.45% (118 653 people out of a total of 210 177). Compared to the average, the 55-57% category corresponds to 10 administativ- territorial units (Braolt, Arcuş, Catalina, Ghidfalău, Malnaş, Micfalău, Moacşa, Ozun, Reci, and Turia), while other 27 units are below 55%, such as Hăghig commune, with the lowest percentage (46.83%). Only six units were between values of 57 and 59%: Covasna, Cernat, Comandău, Dalnic, Ghelinţa, and Ojdula, while values above 60% were recorded in Târgu Secuiesc (60.47%) and Sfântu Gheorghe (61.33%). The Gender and Age Structureof the Population of Covasna County… 245 Figure 2. Age group structure in Covasna County, LAU 2 level, at the 2011 Census (Data source: 2011 Census) c) The above 60 years age group registered a county value of 20.76% (43 631 inhabitants). Nine level 2 administrative units had values between 19-21% (Târgu Secuiesc, Întorsura Buzăului, Barcani, Bodoc, Brăduţ, Dalnic, Ghidfalău, Ojdula, and Sita Buzăului), percentages below 19% being found in seven LAU2: Sfântu Gheorghe, Belin, Boroşneu Mare, Comandău, Ghelinţa, Vâlcele (13.18%, lowest value), and Valea Crişului. Above the average, there is the 21-22% echelon, with four administrative units, one urban (Covasna) and three rural (Băţani, Cernat, and Moacşa), and above 22%, with 25 administrative units, the highest being registered in Mereni (29.53%) (figure 2). The male population of Covasna County The male population had a value of 49.22% (103 454 men out of 210 177 inhabitants), with the three major age groups as follows: 24 504 or 23.69% - young age, 59 952 or 57.95% - adult age and 18 998 or 18.36% - elderly. a) The 0-19 years age group had a percentage of 23.69%. Values of 22-24% were found in 11 local administrative units (Baraolt, Covasna, Bixad, Breţcu, Catalina, Mereni, Micfalău, Moacşa, Ojdula, Sânzieni, and Zăbala), while the 24-26% category contains four communes (Aita Mare, Dobârlău, Ghelinţa, and Zagon). Values above 26% of the young male populace emerged in 13 rural units (Belin, Brăduţ, Hăghig, Vâlcele etc., the last registering the highest value, 44.36%) 246 George-Bogdan TOFAN, Adrian NIŢĂ, Bogdan-Nicolae PĂCURAR and in one urban unit (Întorsura Buzăului). The lowest values, below 22%, were recorded in the remaining 16 administrative units, such as Malnaş commune, with 17.53% (figure 3). b) The 20-59 years age group reached a value of 57.95% (59 952 people) at county level, with percentages around the average, or 56-58%, in 12 administrative units (Baraolt, Breţcu, Catalina, Chichiş, Ghidfalău, Ilieni, Micfalău, Poian, Sita Buzăului, Valea Crişului, Zagon, and Zabala). ANALELE ŞTIINŢIFICE ALE UNIVERSITĂŢII ”AL. I. CUZA“ IAŞI Geologie. Tomul LI, 2005 LITHOSTRATIGRAPHIC AND HYDROGEOLOGIC CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING PLIOCENE-QUATERNARY DEPOSITS FROM SFANTU GHEORGHE AND TARGU SECUIESC SEDIMENTARY DEPRESSIONS, ROMANIA RODICA MACALEŢ, EMIL RADU, RADU CATALINA1 SUMMARY The paper presents some lithostratigraphic and hydrogeologic considerations of Neogene and Quaternary deposits from Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Secuiesc depressions, based on information from recent drilling programme. Several hydrogeological cross-sections are presented here to support the geological interpretation and tectonic evolution of the Pliocene-Quaternary deposits in the area. Key words: lithostratigraphy, hydrogeology, Sfântu Gheorghe depression, Târgu Secuiesc depression, groundwater, aquifer strata. INTRODUCTION Starting from Pliocene, the tectonic evolution of the Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Secuiesc depressions was favourable for developement of molasse deposits, with high lithological variability and conditions for lignite layers accumulation. This paper is based on new information obtained from water bores, geological drillholes and also from drillholes mainly drilled to assess the potential for the presence of new lignite layers in the area, with emphasis on geology and faunal content of the Pliocene and Quaternary sediments. A number of drillholes from Sfantu Gheorghe and Targu Secuiesc depressions have been investigated by the author. The results are present using several cross-sections and synthetic lithostratigraphic columns, which provide a new base to interpret the geology of the area as well as the groundwater potential. 139 Rodica Macaleţ, Emil Radu, Cătălina Radu GENERAL GEOLOGY AND GEOMORPHOLOGY OF THE AREA Based on their geomorphology, Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Secuiesc depressions are considered to be part of the Braşov Basin, and are developed on its north-eastern side.

  • Identity Discourses on National Belonging: the Hungarian Minority in Romania 1
"This version of the manuscript is the authors’ copy, prior to the publisher's processing. An updated and edited version was published in the Romanian Journal of Political Science, Vol. 14, No. 1, Summer 2014 pp 61-86 Identity discourses on national belonging: the Hungarian minority in Romania 1 2 Valér Veres ABSTRACT This paper deals with national representations of the Hungarian minority from Transylvania and its group boundaries within the context of the Hungarian and Romanian nation. The main empirical source is represented by qualitative data, based on a focus group analysis from 2009. It analyses the ways in which Hungarians from Transylvania reconstruct national group boundaries based on ideological discourses of nationalism, including specific differences that may be observed in discursive delimitations within the minority group. The study focuses on the following three research questions. The first one refers to the national boundaries indicated, to the interpretations given to belonging to a nation. The second one refers to the way people name their homeland and the interpretations they relate to it. The third one refers to the way Hungarians from Transylvania relate to Hungary. Based on focus group answers, two marked national discourses may be distinguished about the representations of Hungarians from Transylvania regarding nation and national belonging. The two main discourses are the essentialist-radical and the quasi-primordial – moderate discourse. Conceptually, the discourses follow Geertz’s typology (1973). As for the Hungarian minority form Romania, we may talk about a quasi- primordialist discourse which is also based on cultural nation, but it has a civic nation extension towards Romanians.

These species are included in the list of harmful organisms of potato which are monitored annually. Both species were detected in the soil samples from Brasov, Covasna, Harghita County in 2010-2011 period. The detection of potato cyst nematodes from soil was carried out with Schuiling centrifuge. The identification of potato cyst nematodes species was based on a combination of morphological, morphometric characters and molecular technique (Multiplex-PCR). It is presented our results regarding criteria, materials and methods which were used for identification of these dangerous pest allover the world and in EU states. In order to investigate species and distribution of the Potato Cyst Nematode (PCN), Globodera spp., present in Romania, soil samples were collected from different fields. Identification of Globodera species was based on some morphological criteria and confirmed by PCR. This is the first report of molecular identification of PCN populations which was done in Romania. INTRODUCTION The potato cyst nematodes (PCN) Globodera rostochiensis (Wollenweber) Behrens and Globodera pallida (Stone) are quarantine nematodes on potato.

  • Cultural and Linguistic Layers Embedded in Romanian Oikonyms Derived from Hagionyms
Cultural and linguistic layers embedded in Romanian oikonyms derived from hagionyms Oliviu FELECAN and Nicolae FELECAN Introduction In addition to constituting linguistic, geographical, historical, anthropo- logical, ethnographic, social and psychological markers, toponyms may also function as religious symbols, especially in those cases when the name of a place is derived from a hagionym. In the present paper, we focus on hagionymic oikonyms, a field of research that has been explored through various theoretical frameworks within Romania and which pro- vides fruitful insights into religious and cultural practices and attitudes. In the case of oikonyms bearing a religious background, “the proper name is a linguistic sign that designates a precise referent which can be located in time and space” (Billy 1995, p. 142, apud Vaxelaire 2005, p. 161, orig. French1) and whose position is transparent. Accordingly, our study lies within the broad domain of onomastics, highlighting specific aspects related to anthroponymy, on the one hand, and toponymy, on the other. With regard to Romanian anthroponymy, Puşcariu (1976, p. 298, orig. Romanian) has pointed out that: there is no continuity between the official names of pagan Romans and Christian Romanians. […] Christianity does not seem to have greatly affected old Romanian onomastics. In fact, apart from the two names Nicoară and Sumedrea (from Sâmedru = Sanctus Demetrius)2 Romanian does not evidence any other hagionyms revealing ancient phonetic structures. 1 The quotations marked as being originally in French or Romanian (indicated by “orig. French” and “orig. Romanian” respectively) are only provided as translations. 2 As an oikonym, this name does not occur in the Daco-Romanian area.

In Romania more than 500 damage cases caused by large carnivores are reported by livestock owners and farmers each year. This is the main reason for hunting derogation despite the protected species status. This study is the result of detailed examination of 198 damage cases caused by bears in 2008 and 2009, in the south- eastern Carpathian Mts in Romania. The goal of the study was to examine whether an individual-specific behavioural pattern among problematic bears exists. We looked for bears which showed repeated killing of livestock, a phenomenon claimed by livestock owners to indicate the presence of a problematic individual in the area. In 27% of the observed cases the problematic bears exhibited specific behaviour patterns: clear specialization on a certain type of damage, high degree of tolerance for humans, selectivity for certain prey items, returning back to the damage site in less than 8 days. Fast adaptation and taking advantage of easily obtainable food around human created artificial sources is characteristic for all bear species, due to their high learning capacity and ecological plasticity, but from the conservation and management point of view dealing with individuals which specialize to live mainly around artificial areas becomes a “problem”. Thus defining and identifying individual behaviour patterns oriented towards conflicting behaviour might be useful for wildlife managers in identifying “problem individuals” in order to apply the proper control methods.
