Armstrong-Cooper Collection Armstrong-Cooper collection Descriptive Summary Repository: Georgia Historical Society Creator: Armstrong, Mack , (Hugh H.), 1944-2002. Title: Armstrong-Cooper collection Dates: 1842-1982 Extent: 11.1 cubic feet (111 roll boxes) Identification: MS 1671 Biographical/Historical Note Robert L. Cooper (circa 1875-1954), a native of Screven County, opened his Savannah real estate company in 1920. R.L. Cooper Realty handled many major transactions in the coastal area including Henry Ford's property acquisitions in Richmond Hill. By 1947, one of his sons, Thomas R. (Randy) Cooper (1910-2000), had joined the real estate firm. The firm was then known as R.L. and T.R. Cooper Realty. Robert Cooper was very active in local, state, and national real estate boards. He died in Savannah on 15 September 1954. After the death of his father, Randy Cooper continued the firm under the name of T.R. Cooper Realty. In the mid- 1980s T.R. Cooper Realty became affiliated with another local company in a pairing known as the Armstrong-Cooper Land Company. Randy Cooper died in Savannah on 20 July 2000. Hugh H. Armstrong, Sr. (1920-2000), a native of Savannah, became involved in real estate and the construction industry in the 1950s. In 1953, he founded the Hugh Armstrong Real Estate Company in Savannah. Armstrong, Sr. also founded the Armstrong Construction Company. The company constructed homes and developed residential subdivisions in coastal Georgia and Florida including the Windsor Forest subdivision in Savannah. In the late 1960s, Hugh H. (Mack) Armstrong, Jr. (1944-2002) joined the Hugh Armstrong Real Estate Company, becoming the President and Principal Broker of the firm. Mack Armstrong was actively involved with many local and state-wide real estate and development organizations. Hugh Armstrong, Sr. died in Savannah on 11 June 2000. Mack Armstrong died in Savannah on 26 April 2002 at the age of 57. The Hugh Armstrong Real Estate Company continues today under the leadership of Mack's son Ryan Schneider. The company now focuses on commercial, industrial, and investment real estate. Scope and Content Note This collection consists of maps and photographs containing a wealth of information recording the growth and development of the Coastal Empire and Low Country in the twentieth century. The collection contains seven cubic feet of maps and photographs. This collection documents various counties, towns, rural areas, and historical sites primarily in Georgia and South Carolina. However, some material exists for other locations such as Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, and the Bahamas. Although the bulk of the items in this collection date from the 1920s through the 1970s, there is material as early as 1842 and as late as 1982. The types of maps found in this collection include topographic maps, aerial photographic maps, road maps, and real estate maps with an emphasis on property boundaries. There are both civilian and government-appointed maps of personal and commercial property. The majority of the photographs in this collection are aerial photographs, however, there are a few photos of home sites. Many of the maps document land subdivision, individual plats, and timber cruises. There is also information relating to industrial and commercial real estate. Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, and Screven counties are well represented as are the South Carolina counties of Beaufort and Jasper. Land tracts along the Ogeechee, Savannah, and Altamaha rivers are documented, and other rivers are represented as well. Plantations such as Ford Plantation, Castle Hill/Tomotley (SC), and Vallambrosia have related maps and/or photographs. The index to the collection has information divided into eleven categories: State, County, City/Locale, City/Locale 2, Date, Map or Photograph, Cartographer, Item Size, Item Scale, Item Number, and a descriptive Notes section. The City/Locale 2 provides a section for more precise or additional location information. For example, it may contain a specific street name, property name, or plat name by owner. The Notes section may contain additional location information or other useful information. The Date section contains day, month, and year information. If only the month and year were known, that item was assigned the day of "01." Likewise, if only the year was identified, that item was assigned "01 January" for that specific year. Due to database constraints, year dates for items from 1929 and earlier consist of all four numbers (01-January- 1929); year dates from 1930 and forward consist of only the last two numbers (01-January-30). There are some unused numbers and some manuscript materials that were originally assigned a number, but are not currently cataloged. The unused numbers are 27, 92, 250, 459, 485, 862, 926, and 979. The uncataloged map numbers are 9, 14, 48, 260, 261, 324, 326, 328, 330, 332, 334, 336, 338, 340, 342, 344, 346, 348, 350, 352, 354, 356, 358, 360, 363, 365, 367, 369, 370, 372, 374, 376, 378, 380, 382, 384, 451, 452, 517, 518, 608, 711, 759, 764, 794, 861, 871, and 922. More refined searches are possible with the help of the archival staff. Index Terms Aerial photographs. Armstrong, Hugh H., 1920-2000. Armstrong, Mack , (Hugh H.), 1944-2002.
