University College Birmingham

Accredited by the University of Birmingham UCB is in the heart of Birmingham, a city with one of the youngest, most diverse populations in Europe - not to mention more than 65,000 students. It’s a combination that creates a vibrant atmosphere, with plenty of nightlife, cultural attractions and excitement. All this activity is minutes away from our halls of residence in the city centre. Teaching benefits from our central location too: we’re based in the conference and hotel quarter, which means opportunities for practical experience are on our doorstep. Successful specialist courses depend on the best equipment and teaching facilities. We’re investing heavily in the right resources: McIntyre House, a centre for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, opened in 2014 and a further campus is planned for completion in 2018/19. Our approachable staff work with smaller-than-average class sizes to enhance the individual teaching experience. In addition to well-equipped classrooms, we have a comprehensively stocked, specialist library where students benefit from the latest e-learning resources.

UCB has been hugely supportive throughout my career, helping me to realise my dream of running a successful patisserie business. I trained in professional cookery at the University’s excellent College of Food and the experience helped me to find work in a Michelin star restaurant and a luxury hotel. When I started my company, Miss Macaroon, as a Birmingham-based social enterprise, UCB allowed me to use its kitchens. Now my products are being stocked at John Lewis’s flagship store at the new Grand Central shopping centre in Birmingham and I am looking to expand my company and give new opportunities to creative young people. The skills and disciplines I learned at UCB have proved to be invaluable throughout the exciting, and on-going, adventures of Miss Macaroon. Rosie Ginday Miss Macaroon

Keep in Touch

UCB equipped me with the technical knowledge and skills I needed to progress in the career I love. I studied for Professional Cookery at levels 1 to 3 and did a placement at Wiltons restaurant in London, which gave me, as a young chef, a great insight into the industry at a high level. I liked the University so much I stayed on to study Culinary Arts Management (CAM) and did another invaluable placement, this time for a year, at a Michelin star restaurant in the French Alps. My future wife, Julie, also did CAM at UCB. I’ve been lucky to have worked for one of my culinary heroes, Glynn Purnell, and I now run The Four Seasons Restaurant at Swinfen Hall in Staffordshire, which won a third AA Rosette this year under my management. My success has been down to hard work – and the lessons I learned at UCB. Paul Proffitt Head Chef

I studied NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Beauty Therapy at UCB. My tutor encouraged me to continue my studies at university level as I wanted to pursue a career that revolved around customers and sales. I received a lot of advice and found that UCB’s Marketing Management course was what I wanted. The quality of the teaching and facilities are exceptional. The best part of my course was the opportunity to work with real clients and apply the skills I had learned so that businesses could develop themselves. I chose UCB because of its central location in the city and the outstanding resources available to students. UCB is exceptional in the way that it operates, and the lectures and seminars fit well with student life. The lecturers are brilliant – they always made themselves available and were very helpful. I have just secured my placement and it was a much easier process with the help of the placement team here at UCB. I’m not entirely sure what career I would like to go into and therefore found a mini “hospital-like” organisation which deals with all sorts of illnesses and has patients of all ages. Hopefully, this can allow me to shadow the professionals and get a basic idea of their job roles and day-to-day work lives. I can’t wait to start. Maliha Somji BSc (Hons) Health & Social Care

I decided to study at UCB for many reasons, including its wide range of vocational courses that allow students to gain employment experience during their studies. The best part of the course was being taught by certified and knowledgeable lecturers who have vast amounts of experience working with youths in the community. The dedicated placement team supported me with finding a suitable placement that was focused on my career interests. My ambition is to involve myself in community projects that inspire people to live healthy lifestyles, allowing them to reach their full potential. I hope to secure a job working in the community for a reputable charity organisation that helps vulnerable people in society such as the homeless, victims of child abuse and domestic violence and people who struggle with substance abuse. I love everything about the Health and Social Care course and there is nothing that I can fault. I have recently finished a placement at a nursery in Erdington and have decided that I would like to work in family support. I am now looking for my own placement in this area and hopefully, by the end of this degree, I will be working in a family support centre. I would recommend UCB because the University staff provide every student with support and encouragement. The facilities and resources are fantastic. My advice to students considering taking this course would be to take the plunge. For my placement, I was fortunate to be part of a team of volunteers at The Children’s Society. This gave me the opportunity to gain experience in many areas of the charity’s work. I was passionate to get on board with a campaign called “Keep The Warmth,” which looked at the main energy providers and how the lives of many families are affected by poverty and how they get stuck in the debt trap due to soaring energy bills. I accompanied the campaign team by handing in a signed petition at EON in Coventry. The event was televised and I appeared on Central News. I also enjoyed working for a youth group, supporting young male asylum seekers. Each week I would either cook for them or participate in games or crafts. It was rewarding work. I chose to study Culinary Arts Management at UCB for two reasons: the practical elements it offered and the opportunity to do a placement abroad. I went to Greenwich Country Club in Connecticut, USA and it was fantastic. I got to work with most stations in the kitchen, which was something that my experience was lacking. I had to overcome the cultural barriers early on but the unfamiliar environment made me a more mature individual for my return to UCB in the third year. I would recommend a placement abroad to anyone who has to push themselves in unfamiliar scenarios and improve their skills every day. It is extremely hard work and there are definitely challenging days – but the good days strongly outweigh these moments. Jessica Simmons BA (Hons) Culinary Arts Management

I chose UCB for its excellent reputation and world-class facilities as I believe in today’s ever changing, fast-paced food industry it is important to keep up-to-date with industry standards. After leaving catering college in London, I decided that I wanted to be more than just a chef. The Food Development and Innovation course has offered me the opportunity to step up and enter the continually growing industry of food manufacturing and product development. Food Development and Innovation offers me a unique blend of both practical and theory at degree level, which allows me to enhance my existing practical skills, whilst building on my knowledge of the industry. I believe this will give me excellent graduate job opportunities when I leave UCB and enter the world of work. I hope to gain employment in the new product development field once I have graduated and to work with a large company like MARS or Cranswick. Ben King BSc (Hons) Food Development & Innovation

Last year, I completed a placement at Hobbs House Bakery, home of the Fabulous Baker Brothers. I have competed in competitions held by the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees (ABST) and was awarded the Hovis Overall Winner prize. I also won second place for the Horton Trophy, the Masters Cup and the British Society of Baking Trophy. Everyone has the same passion and drive at UCB, from the lecturers to the students. It is an amazing place to learn about food, wine and service. For culinary skills, UCB is the top of its league. I did a placement year in the South of France near Marseille. It was an incredible experience. I had the independence of living on my own in a foreign country and my French now is really good. I did six months as a pastry chef and six months front of house learning about the wines and talking to customers. I graduated in 2015 and I am now assistant restaurant manager at Michelin-starred restaurant Carters of Moseley, training to be a sommelier. The best part of the course is the practical element. We are taught how to participate in real working environments by talented chefs and restaurant managers. I did not have any experience before my placement in Cyprus. It gave me experience and built my confidence and independence. At the moment, I am in my last year on the course and I am working at the Edgbaston Priory Club. After I finish, I plan to go traveling and I feel that the best way to achieve my goal is to become a cabin crew member. I would like to apply to Emirates and I am full of expectation for my future career. Jelizaveta Brovtseva BA (Hons) Hospitality with Tourism Management

I’ve always been interested in events. I chose UCB because this course really focused on the events industry and was an in-depth, hands-on course. The best part of the course is being able to gain industry experience alongside my studies and enable me to develop a portfolio of my work to show potential employers. I was an intern at Birmingham Airport for Enterprise for three months. After demonstrating what I was capable of, I was promoted to Campus Brand Manager and now establish links and professional relationships on behalf of Enterprise with colleges and universities within the area. I currently do this part-time alongside my studies at UCB. Junior Owolabi BA (Hons) Events Management

The best part of my course was my placement where I learned and experienced what it is like working in the industry. I now work as a food and beverage assistant and meet many people on a daily basis. The best part of the job is having the chance to learn not only about working in the bar and restaurant but also the administration side. This is a great experience because I have gained more skills, enabling me to go into a different sector of the business. Tatenda Annie Samwanda BA (Hons) Hospitality with Events Management

I am working as a food and beverage assistant in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Birmingham for my degree placement. It has been a great experience, working in different departments of the hotel including the restaurant, room service, breakfast and conference and banqueting. Each department has helped me to improve my skills and learn how to deal with different situations on a daily basis. Working in the restaurant has helped me to improve my communication and pressure-handling skills as we directly interact with guests and our main focus is to provide the best service. Room service is more about speed and accuracy of service, so it enabled me to develop time management and team work skills. Omer Malik BA (Hons) Hospitality Business Management

I study Hospitality with Events Management as a four-year degree which involved one year’s paid placement. For my placement, I worked at the Birmingham Ramada hotel in the Mailbox. I gained valuable experience in various departments including the in-house Starbucks coffee shop, reception and reservations. The placement will help my future career as work experience is attractive to employers; sometimes a qualification alone is not enough. On completion of my placement, I remained at the hotel and am now a permanent reservations agent which involves both bedroom reservations and conference bookings. The role gives real-life application to my studies and has provided me with the experience I need for graduate employment. Chloe Hollier-Swain BA (Hons) Hospitality with Events Management

I would recommend UCB because it is a multi-cultural environment with helpful and supportive staff. I loved being part of a diverse university that offers so many different courses. It was great to take part in events organised by other students on different courses, which included dinner events, beauty events and sports-related events such as therapy massages. Having a practical side to my studies was very important. Being able to go out and do primary research and take part in debates and presentations has definitely developed my communication skills. Now I am working as a travel counsellor at HRG North America in Canada. My job involves dealing with customers and helping them to book travel or change reservations. Aviation has always been one of my passions and I now get to work closely with various airlines. Paula Seicaru BA (Hons) International Tourism Business Management

The three years I spent at UCB helped me more than I ever thought they would. My aim was to gain knowledge on a worldwide scale in order to work in the tourism industry. I had the opportunity to visit Glasgow in Scotland for a “live” project and UCB facilitated another trip to Copenhagen, Denmark for learning purposes and assessment. International Tourism Management opened my eyes and made me realise the opportunities available in this huge industry. I discovered many niche sectors of the tourism industry, such as dark tourism and religious tourism. I have learnt that there are so many unexplored markets which can offer me a great chance of doing something useful with my life, but also with the lives of other people. The work experience on the course has been amazing. I have worked in theatres, TV and on a film, which was really exciting. The techniques you learn on the course range from body casting, cuts and bullet wounds to stab wounds. Really gruesome stuff! We also cover character make-up, which I really enjoy. Making an 18-year-old look 60 is amazing. The lecturers pack a lot into the course but I love it. I have not missed a day. Hannah Forbes FdA Specialist Hair and Media Make-up

On placement, I have been in the challenging position of working for a netball team, a sport I was not familiar with. It has given me confidence to act on my own instincts and draw upon my knowledge and experiences gained in lectures and clinics as well as giving me plenty to read about in my spare time. The work has encouraged me to push myself in areas I was not confident in, such as leading the team during the pre-match warm-ups (based on dynamic stretching exercises) while learning how to be specific to the needs of the sport. Completing a placement is a great way of building knowledge and confidence and gaining experience. Philip Williams BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy

I joined UCB as a mature student hoping to take my beauty therapy qualification to a higher level. I have had to give presentations, work with students of all ages and research a lot of new and interesting topics. Learning how to critically analyse was a struggle but, thanks to my lecturers, I can now confidently do this. The course has allowed me to explore the beauty industry and helped me to decide what I want to do once I graduate. I hope to gain a position with a health and beauty graduate scheme to further my knowledge and experience in brand management and marketing. I would urge anyone, no matter what age, to take the step into higher education with UCB. Charlotte Hope BA (Hons) Beauty Therapy Management

I chose UCB because of its resources and facilities, including the full spa facilities. I loved having the opportunity to learn more about the spa industry through a variety of teaching techniques, all of which were provided by lecturers who know the industry well and share their knowledge enthusiastically. I completed my degree, obtained a first, and have recently accepted a graduate role with Marriott, the international hotel company. This is a 12-month graduate scheme in which I am able to put the theoretical and practical skills I learned at UCB to use. My advice to any new students would be to work hard, aim high and never be afraid to ask for support or advice. Make the most of every opportunity that comes your way. Whilst studying at UCB, I developed a passion for travelling. The course taught me skills which helped me stand out from the crowd, enabling me to secure employment in positions including a make-up artist at a theatre camp in New York. Since graduating, I have continued to travel whilst expanding my skill set. I worked as a spa receptionist in California the summer after graduation. The role presented exciting opportunities which will see me looking at a management internship with the five-star spa after I have travelled in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Indonesia. The course offered by UCB is diverse, catering to all aspects of the hair and make-up industry. This allows students to apply themselves in any sector they are passionate about. In future, I hope to complete a teaching qualification and encourage others to explore the opportunities in the industry. Jordayne Whitfield BA (Hons) Specialist Hair & Media Make-up
