Find out how to work a foundation chain that is not too tight. Join a new skein of or a new color without losing that first stitch. See ways of attaching buttons as you work. Create invisible circular joins where the beginning and end are absolutely imperceptible. Weave in those little ends that are too short to put through a darning needle. Take away lots of small “fix-its” and improve those details. Based on Lily’s book, “Mosaic Magic, Afghans Made Easy,” cover the many different ways to “drop” a color several rows down for different patterns and effects from straight down to diagonals both left and right to crossings and more! This translation makes for a firmer fabrics that are ideal for coats and jackets and heavier sweaters. Use up all your scrap , try out interesting color combinations, chart a few of your own original patterns. The bonus is that these are very reversible as well. Skill Level: Intermediate Skills Required: None Description: Crocheting a flat piece back and forth results in every other row “ridging out.” This means horizontal bands that all too often does not flatter. This occurs even in fancier stitches such as and Seed Stitch. When working circular in the round having only the Right Side facing, there is no ridge. However, there is a clear bias or torquing and the stitches don’t line up vertically. This is no longer a problem. Yes, there is indeed a solution and it’s a fairly simple one. Employing what I call the “flip” stitches. Try not only the basic stitches, but a few fancier patterned stitches as well. Learn how to work back and forth with a “smooth” row facing all the time! Description: In this class you will learn how to design and construct amigurumi stuffed animals based on photos of live animals in nature. While teddy bears tend to share similar shapes, creating more realistic plush toys takes a different approach to shaping. In nature, there are less ovals and more curves, points, and sharp corners. We will first review the most useful shapes in your toolbox for creating amigurumi, then we’ll apply these shapes to a variety of photos, marking them up to become amigurumi projects. Each row uses only one color at a time to create 3D images for butterflies, rosebuds and hearts. Use these designs to create a whole blanket of 3D images or add them along the edging of a project for a whimsical finish. We’ll crochet each design together step-by-step in class. This is not tapestry crochet and these are not appliques you sew to the project after the piece is finished. You’ll stitch these designs right in the middle of your work. It’s easy and fun. Don’t be! In this introductory class, you’ll learn to make the basic Irish Crochet rose and leaf motifs. You’ll also learn to make a background for joining your Irish Crochet motifs together into a project. To finish it off, you’ll work a simple Irish Crochet edging with picots around the edges of your assembled project, including the use of a padding cord. Irish Crochet is typically worked with cotton crochet thread, but if you’re not comfortable using crochet thread and steel crochet hooks, cotton yarn can be used instead. Crochet thread is commonly used, but Filet Crochet projects with yarn are also quite common. You’ll start by learning the basics of Filet Crochet (open mesh, closed mesh, lacets and making “square” mesh) while making a Filet Heart Coaster or Hot Pad. Then we’ll expand on the basics to learn increases, decreases, diagonal stitches and much more while making swatches. Learn to read a Filet Crochet chart and feel confident in tackling that gorgeous Filet Crochet project you’ve always wanted to make! So what are you waiting for? Come learn the “fantastic” Filet Crochet technique today! Big & Bold Cables A New Approach to Larger Crocheted Cables Teacher: Bonnie Barker Skill Level: Intermediate Skills Required: Attendees should be very familiar with the basic crochet stitches (sc, dc, tr, slip st, ch) and able to crochet them reasonably evenly without adding or decreasing the stitch count in a row. Description: Come learn how to crochet the Large Cable, the Wheat Cable, the Honeycomb Cable, and a combination of all three, using a new, smoother crochet cabling technique. We will also learn how to combine these stitches to create beautiful crocheted fabric. Homework: None Supplies Needed: Be sure to bring enough yarn for at least 7 swatches. (This can be small samples from your stash. Worsted and DK weights are recommended.) Also bring a variety of crochet hooks that are suitable for the yarn you select. Description: Need a fabulous cord to finish off your wonderful project? Well, now you have options! Learn how to crochet and kumihimo braid several different types of cords in this hands-on class. See how different a cord can look when crocheted with a single crochet or a slip stitch. Discover the looks created by inserting your hook in different parts of a stitch while crocheting. Braid fabulous kumihimo cords in solids, stripes, or floral patterns. Compare those cords with a classic twisted cord made with or without a fringe twister. With this class, you will be able to create your own custom cord to any length you desire. Size 3 mercerized cotton yarn used in photo. *Note: Students will need to purchase a Kumihimo disk (round) and a kumihimo weight before class. These are available online at Amazon and Etsy, or in some craft stores. Students may also make a homemade Kumihimo disk from foam board or cardboard. Homework: Cut 32 pieces of cardboard (or cereal/food box) to 1 ½” x 2”. Class 9:00am-12:00pm Intro Celtic Knot Crochet Teacher: Jennifer Ryan Skill Level: All Skill Levels Skills Required: Students must know how to chain and sc Description: Learn how to make your own unique Celtic Knot crocheted project with techniques used in the award winning Celtic Knot garments by Jennifer Ryan. Students will make a Celtic Knot project (see photo) that can be appliqued on a variety of projects or worn as a pin. First we will practice in a larger form to learn how to weave the knot. Then we will use simple stitches and diagrams to achieve great results with several easy variations. Students will take home handouts of the project pattern and step-by-step instructions and tips to weave Celtic knots. A wide variety of Celtic Knot projects and photos will be on hand for inspiration, instruction and ideas.
