The assessment particularly evaluates the gaps of available biodiversity information sources and, after outlining the most important gaps, to identify priorities for improving the data availability and to give recommendations of how the gaps can be closed. The gap analysis has a focus on biodiversity information on a European scale and is based on an assessment of current marine, terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity data sources. The gaps are evaluated against the needs of the different stakeholders; this includes the demands from European policy (like the EU biodiversity strategy to 2020), international relevant processes (like the Convention on Biodiversity and the Aichi biodiversity targets) and the scientific community. There are various requirements for biodiversity data, and the gap analysis aims
