If you’ve got children aged four to 11, then Saturday 15 July is the day to get down to your local library and start this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. The aim of the challenge is for youngsters to read six books over the summer holidays. It’s free, and there are lots of fun activities along the way. What’s more, kids who complete the challenge will be invited to Southsea Castle on Sunday 17 September to receive certificates and medals. This year’s theme is Animal Agents. It features artwork by Tony Ross, creator of the Little Princess, who has illustrated the Horrid Henry books as well as stories by David Walliams and Roald Dahl.

They are in open spaces such as Canoe Lake and Milton Park, and main roads like Lake Road, Queen Street and Northern Road. Others are in local communities, including Hempstead Green in Paulsgrove and Southsea’s Clarendon Gardens. The meadows, designed to appeal to butterflies and other pollinators, have been made possible thanks to sponsorship from Colas and Portsmouth Water. We’ve also made Guildhall Square greener with new timber planters.

The D-Day Museum may be closed for a major transformation, but it's still popping up over the summer. Our new quieter cycling routes are great for families who love to ride together, beginners on a bike or cyclists who’ve got a bit rusty. The 10 colour-coded routes make use of quieter roads and cycle paths, more suited to less confident cyclists. Coloured stickers on lamp-posts mark out the routes and tell you when you need to get off your bike, when to use a crossing and which way to go. There are five routes between the north and south of the city and five between the east and west, so you can plan a journey to key destinations including the seafront, The Hard and Fratton Park; as well as to schools, colleges, shops and workplaces. Portsmouth is ideal for cycling because it’s flat and compact. We’re hoping the quieter routes will make it even easier to use a bike and leave the car at home. A larger version of the map is available from your local library. Or search cycling at www.portsmouth.gov.uk

We're looking for people to discuss the issue at a focus group, which will run from 6.30pm to 8pm on Tuesday 25 July at a city centre venue. Spaces are limited, so we'll be ensuring we have a good representation of residents from different areas and sections of the community. Parking: Please apply at www.research.net/r/preparking by 15 July, or call 023 9283 4092. If you're not part of the focus group you can still submit your comments. Just go to the web page your ideas above or fill in a survey, available at your local library or the Civic Offices. Your ideas will be used as the basis for a more needed detailed consultation later in the year.
