Emily Dickinson Poems Commentary
Emily Dickinson was twenty on 10 December 1850. There are 5 of her poems surviving from 1850-4. Poem 1 F1 ‘Awake ye muses nine’ In Emily’s youth the feast of St Valentine was celebrated not for one day but for a whole week, during which ‘the notes flew around like snowflakes (L27),’ though one year Emily had to admit to her brother Austin that her friends and younger sister had received scores of them, but his ‘highly accomplished and gifted elderly sister (L22)’ had been entirely overlooked. She sent this Valentine in 1850 to Elbridge Bowdoin, her father’s law partner, who kept it for forty years. It describes the law of life as mating, and in lines 29-30 she suggests six possible mates for Bowdoin, modestly putting herself last as ‘she with curling hair.’ The poem shows her sense of fun and skill as a verbal entertainer. Poem 2 [not in F] ‘There is another sky’ On 7 June 1851 her brother Austin took up a teaching post in Boston. Emily writes him letter after letter, begging for replies and visits home. He has promised to come for the Autumn fair on 22 October, and on 17 October Emily writes to him (L58), saying how gloomy the weather has been in Amherst lately, with frosts on the fields and only a few lingering leaves on the trees, but adds ‘Dont think that the sky will frown so the day when you come home! She will smile and look happy, and be full of sunshine then – and even should she frown upon her child returning…’ and then she follows these words with poem 2, although in the letter they are written in prose, not verse. -

On an Island
Press Information: ON AN ISLAND The new album from David Gilmour Release date: 6 March 2006 EMI Records On An Island is the third David Gilmour album and his first studio recording since Pink Floyds 1994 multi-platinum The Division Bell. From the first moments of the sound collage that begins On An Island, you know its a special experience that not only bears comparison with the best of Pink Floyd, but also confirms their lead guitarist and singer as an outstanding solo artist. Here he reveals a personal vision and a breadth of styles – folk, jazz, orchestral and rock – brought together as a unified piece by his lyrical guitar playing and instantly recognisable voice. With orchestrations by the renowned Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner and a luminous production (assisted by Roxy Musics Phil Manzanera), there is virtuosity a plenty. Crosby and Nash sing harmonies, Robert Wyatt plays the cornet, Caroline Dale the cello and Alasdair Molloy the glass harmonica. Pink Floyds Richard Wright guests on Hammond organ, while Gilmour sweeps and soars with his often soul-piercing guitar and vocals. Yet the album never becomes grandiose. At its heart, it remains a reflective piece, not least because of the lyrics. Although Gilmour takes some writing credits, most go to writer Polly Samson, continuing a collaborative partnership that began with The Division Bell. The songs tell of shared experiences that evoke a breadth of moods, from the hauntingly beautiful title track On An Island (with a guitar performance set to enter the Gilmour canon of classics) to the meditative The Blue and A Pocketful of Stones, as well as the heavier rock and blues numbers Take A Breath and This Heaven. -

Envisaging Heaven in the Middle Ages
Envisaging Heaven in the Middle Ages Envisaging Heaven in the Middle Ages considers medieval notions of heaven in theological and mystical writings, in visions of the otherworld and in medieval arts such as drama, poetry, music and vernacular literature. The volume considers the influence of images and visions of heaven on the secular literature by some of the greatest writers of the period, such as Chrétien de Troyes and Chaucer. The coherence and beauty of these notions make heaven one of the most impressive medieval cathedrals of the mind. The book shows that the idea of heaven in the Middle Ages was as varied as those who wrote about it, and reveals the extent to which the Christian afterlife was (as it is today) a projection of human hopes and fears. Because ‘the reality’ of heaven was one based on speculation, as well as fancy, medieval heavens were products both of ingenious thought and of creative, wishful imagination. With contributions from such experts as Peter Dronke, Beverly Mayne Kienzle, Robin Kirkpatrick, Bernard McGinn, Peter Meredith, Barbara Newman and A.C. Spearing, this collection will be essential reading for all those inter- ested in medieval religion and culture. Carolyn Muessig is Senior Lecturer in Medieval Theology at the University of Bristol. She is the author of Sermon, Preacher and Audience in the Middle Ages, Medieval Monastic Education and The Faces of Women in the Sermons of Jacques de Vitry: most recently, she co-edited Hildegard of Bingen’s ‘Exposi- tiones euangeliorum’. Ad Putter is Reader in English Literature at the Univer- sity of Bristol.
