Meet Our Seminarian, Peter O’Steen

I was born and raised in a Catholic household in Greenville, S.C. with my two parents, my grandfather, and four brothers. I at- tended public school from kindergarten through high school and I received my catechesis through weekly CCD classes on Wednes- day nights. After high school, I entered the University of South Carolina and was graduated in December of 2017 with a degree in Management Science. In August of 2018, I entered St. Vincent de Paul Regional seminary for the Diocese of Charleston. The innocent days of my childhood began to fade as the awkward years of middle school approached. My desire to become a class clown replaced the habit of good marks. Talking with girls after school substituted playing in the creek and my dreams to become a professional athlete seemed like a distant memory. The discovery of alcohol fueled this unfortunate trend, as my high school years passed in a daze. My “relationship with Christ” served as a buffer to ease my mother’s anxieties. But this buffer soon wore out as the fruits of my actions revealed the sorry state of my soul. I considered run-ins with the law merely as bad luck. I settled for average in all aspects of life, yet I managed to scrape up the grades for a scholarship. Blindly I entered college with eight high school friends and my twin brother. We joined the same fraternity surpassing our former “glory”. God was simply an old habit which annoyed my Sunday morning hangovers. I had no aim in sight except the plans for the upcoming night. On the surface, I looked content, but my soul starved for something deeper. I was like a snowball headed for hell, and heavenly wisdom permitted a ferocious fall. Some friends abandoned me, I had nowhere to turn. But out of the depths I discovered a Moth- er. My soul now awakened, I felt like a child again. Sin lost its savor and hope transformed my future. Like a child holding Her hand, I walked day by day with no aim in sight, except paradise.
