Easy for Enable in the Eclipse SUNDAY, 7 JULY 2019 EASY FOR ENABLE JAPAN=S GROWING CONFIDENCE IN INTERNATIONAL MARKET by Emma Berry IN THE ECLIPSE CHITOSE, Japan--When it comes to breeding and racing Thoroughbreds, there's no doubt that Japan does it properly. When it comes to sales, however, the Japanese do things a little differently. A yearling sale in July is nothing new but a full session of youngsters not yet weaned is a format unseen anywhere else in the bloodstock sales world, but it is one which appears to work very well in Hokkaido. "In Japan, traditionally buyers always preferred to buy their racehorses as foals, though gradually they are coming around a bit more to the yearling market," said the JRHA's international representative Naohiro Goda as we ventured out on Saturday morning to view foals at Japan's two biggest breeding operations. Our first port of call was to Teruya Yoshida's Shadai Farm, followed by a preview of an even bigger draft from his Enable takes the Coral-Eclipse, with a jubilant Frankie Dettori aboard brother Katsumi's Northern Farm, situated right next door to the Racingfotos.com Shadai Stallion Station, which is owned by all three Yoshida brothers--Haruya included--under the Shadai Corporation banner. There is a feeling that she has more to give on this evidence, as at no stage last summer was she giving the signals that she was capable of a performance of this ilk. A perfect storm converged here, with Frankie Dettori arriving in Esher on the back of a vintage Royal Ascot and a G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud success for good measure and Enable blossoming after a dousing of recent summer rain. Regal Reality was up to the same tricks as he had been before the G3 Brigadier Gerard S., planting himself on the Rhododendron Walk and having to be taken a mile and a quarter down to the start to avoid going past the racecourse stables. The 5-year-old Epsom Oaks, King George and dual Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe will break from the widest stall in the 10-furlong feature, which represents her first run over the trip since her only defeat when third as a fledgling headline act at Newbury in April 2017. With no obvious pacemaker in the line-up, it may be that the homebred is forced into cutting out her own running as she did when staging a successful comeback in Kempton=s G3 September S. 10 months ago.
