Anketiranci so morali podati razloge zakaj imajo v lasti oziroma nimajo v lasti določenih sistemov, vključno s telekomunikacijskimi paketi ter pojasniti kako dostopni so ti sistemi njihovemu gospodinjstvu. Podatki vključujejo še vrsto in velikost naselja, regijo stalnega prebivališča in jezik anketiranja. • From Packet Switching to the Cloud
Professor Nigel Linge FROM PACKET SWITCHING TO THE CLOUD Telecommunication engineers have always drawn a picture of a cloud to represent a network. Today, however, the cloud has taken on a new meaning, where IT becomes a utility, accessed and used in exactly the same on-demand way as we connect to the National Grid for electricity. Yet, only 50 years ago, this vision of universal access to an all- encompassing and powerful network would have been seen as nothing more than fanciful science fiction. he first electronic, digital, network - a figure that represented a concept of packet switching in which stored-program computer 230% increase on the previous year. data is assembled into a short se- was built in 1948 and This clear and growing demand for quence of data bits (a packet) which heralded the dawning of data services resulted in the GPO com- includes an address to tell the network a new age. missioning in July 1970 an experi- where the data is to be sent, error de- T mental, manual call-set-up, data net- tection to allow the receiver to confirm DATA COMMUNICATIONS 1 work that used modems operating at that the contents of the packet are cor- These early computers were large, 48,000bit/s (48kbit/s). rect and a source address to facilitate cumbersome and expensive machines However, computer communica- a reply. and inevitably a need arose for a com- tions is different to voice communi- Since each packet is self-contained, munication system that would allow cations not only in its form but also any number of them can be transmit- shared remote access to them.

  • Northern Ireland
Communications Market Report: Northern Ireland Research Document Publication date: 18 July 2012 Introduction Welcome to Ofcom’s annual review of communications markets in Northern Ireland. This report gives an overview of the region’s communications markets, examining availability, take-up and consumption of the internet, telecommunications, and broadcasting services, and comparing the findings with other nations and the UK as a whole. This year’s report shows that consumers in Northern Ireland are becoming increasingly technology-savvy, with around one in ten now owning a tablet computer such as an iPad, and eight per cent owning an e-reader such as a Kindle. A third of adults now use their mobile phones to go online, reflecting a big increase in the ownership of smartphones – 34% of adults now own one, up from 21% a year ago. Around two-thirds of homes in Northern Ireland have a fixed-line internet connection, which is lower than the UK average of 76%. However, the region is well placed to benefit from significant investment in this area. The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI)-funded Next Generation Broadband Project, completed in March 2012, has enabled Northern Ireland to have the highest availability of superfast broadband services in the UK. Ofcom estimates that 94% of homes in Northern Ireland had access to superfast broadband services by March 2012, compared to a UK-wide figure of 60%. Our research shows that the internet is having an increasing impact on the lives of consumers. Among internet users, nearly three-quarters use it for shopping, while two-thirds use social networking sites.
