One good example is in the field of cartography. Maps pro- duced with painstaking effort and considerable risk a century ago pale in comparison to the wealth of geographic information available to us today. Global positioning satellites, lasers, com- puter technology, the internet and scores of other advances have literally put the world at our fingertips – at least for those of us who know where to look. Few places should stand to benefit more from such advances than Phuket, which annually plays host to millions of visitors who need to get their bearings and naturally turn to maps for help. Some excellent printed maps of Phuket are available, such as the excellent English-language Streets of Phuket by Image Asia. Yet so scant is the interest in maps among most people in Phuket that the company feels there is insufficient interest to launch a Thai version, even though most of the heavy lifting has already been done. The truth is that the vast majority of Phuket residents con- tinue to grope in the dark, unable to read simple maps well enough to make their own lives easier, let alone help foreign visitors. BIS to hold Spring Fair

THE Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the British International School (BIS) are organizing a Spring Fair on March 24 targeted as a family day and open to the whole Phuket community. The PTA’s stated goal is to or- ganize fundraising for enriching various education programmes at the school. They are helped in this by the generosity of the school owners who are donating the school grounds and by the efforts of the non-academic staff. The fair will take place from 11am to 7 pm and will include live entertainment, side stalls with fun games for all ages, dem- onstrations of skills and mini sporting competitions. Local businesses will also be on hand promoting goods and services and there will be a raffle for great prizes including a lucky draw for a Honda Wave bike. For more information contact: E:[email protected]. Phuket band The Legends Of Siam are also set to play at the fair.
