2019 L2L Convention - Nashville www.hcu.edu 3 The Great “I AM” This weekend, many of you will be giving lessons based on this special verse, Exodus 3:14. You are, by now, familiar with the back story. Moses, having tried to help his people by striking dead one of the Egyptians that was keeping his people in slavery, was ridiculed for this by his own people. He fled the country and went to Midian. We cannot know what was in his mind, but I believe that he was licking his wounds, so to speak. I believe he was thinking, “They don’t want my help, so I’ll just leave.” Moses met and married a woman of that country, had children with her, and he served her father, who was the priest of Midi- an, by tending his flocks. The man that God created to save His people from bondage had become a herdsman. Moses was a long way from the role that he had been created for by God. One day, Moses saw a bush that was burning but not burning up, and this is where the famous conversation happened in which God reminded Moses of what his role in this life was to be. Mo- ses had many insecurities, and he wanted to know how the peo- ple would know he was being sent from God. God said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14). So, what is so important about this verse? Why is God being I AM so important to us today? We live in a very uncertain world where tragic events happen every day. To someone who doesn’t believe in God, this is very scary because they believe that this life is all there is. Even to Christians, it is alarm- ing because we care so much about our friends and family. Yet, we have reason to be comforted about what happens in this world. We have I AM as our God, and He is ultimately in control of all. When this life is over, if we have strived to serve and obey His will as He has revealed it to us through His word, we will live with Him forever in heaven. In telling Moses to tell His people that I AM has sent you, God was saying, “No matter what happens to you in this life, you belong to me. I AM the One who created A CHRIST-LIKE you.” In order to be the Christian that God has created you to SPIRIT... be, to fulfill the role that He has for you, it is necessary that you understand to Whom you belong. You and I Please keep in mind that your hard work and belong to the Great I AM. preparation to attend and participate at the Convention this year are greatly appreciated and commended by us all. However, we want Your brother in Christ, to remind you to always keep a Christ-like spirit Roy Johnson in all that you do. That includes competition. Winning at whatever event we compete in is not our primary reward. Rather, our goal should be eternal life and the satisfaction of being a good servant for the Lord. Please be kind, courteous and convey a cooperative spirit in all that you do, both at Convention and in your daily life.
ROMANS 12:10 (KJV) “Be ye kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love, in honor preferring one another.”

In fact, before there was a Lads to Leaders, Ray Skelton was behind the scene helping Dr. OVERALL THEME Zorn, who was then Ray’s friend Lost? Jack, a preacher student at Mont- gomery Bible College. Brother Ray was the person that (based on Luke 15) helped Dr. Zorn obtain his first preaching job, which was at Pumpkin Center, Alabama. The two have been life- BIBLE BOWL long friends since their years in college together. Luke Ray was an inaugural L2L board member added when the board was first created and in all the years since, he has only missed one board meeting. Ray supports L2L PEARLS with his time, his prayers, his money and his love. Be- cause of this level of commitment, Ray Skelton is being Lost & Found named Honorary Convention Director for the 2019 L2L Conventions.
2019 L2L Convention - Nashville 7 James Thomas (JT) Heron was a loving family man dedi- cated to serving God and the church. He served as an elder for several years at Decatur Highway Church of Christ and Brookside Church of Christ. He was a driving force behind the start of the Lads to Leaders and Leaderettes program at Decatur Highway. As a child, JT was not always encouraged to be a leader. However, he had a passion for encouraging kids to be the best they could be and keeping them involved in the work of the church. Because he often thought of himself as a kid at heart, he was always thrilled to spend time around them. Camp was always one of the highlights of the year for him, and he served as the director of Maywood Christian Camp for several years. He loved being around the kids and the adults who worked with him during the week. Although he always came home exhausted, he had many great stories, and it was apparent that he had loved every minute of it. JT was a dedicated Christian determined to live by God’s standards; he believed that he should speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent. This belief did not always make him a popular person, but his zeal for living as God commanded drove him to please God rather than worrying about what other people thought of him. One of JT’s favorite activities was making music. For those who have ever sat near him at church, you could always hear him singing bass, and it was apparent how much he enjoyed singing. He also enjoyed playing musical instruments with his family. He loved playing guitar during the holidays, and he taught all the grandkids and great grandkids how to play his infamous song “Johnny Cut His Big Toe Off” on piano. Before retirement, JT served in the Navy and Army Air Force branches of the military for five years. He was a strong- willed man who opened his own tire repair business and was a cancer survivor. He was a devoted husband to Jewel for 69 years, always taking care of her and their home. One of his funny habits was always vacuuming the floor so that the direction of the carpet matched and did not have any lines in it. He worked in their yard every day and kept their house neat and orderly. His greatest accomplishment, though, was his family. He loved his children and was dedicated to teaching them God’s ways. He believed in preserving the church for generations to come, and worked to build the Lads to Leaders program so that the young people in his family and others could always have the opportunity to participate in the work of the church.
Robert Watson was a faithful and loving husband to his wife, San- dra, for 53 years. He is still deeply loved by his wife, children, grandchildren, church family, and friends. Robert first started influencing young people when he coached football voluntarily at West Birmingham Christian School. Today, his players still tell stories about calling him “coach grizz” because of his scruffy appearance, and how he never lost his faith on the field. They also say he not only made them great players, but also great husbands and fathers. Robert has been involved with Lads to Leaders for the last 18 years. In that time he has helped kids in Bible Bowl, speech, debate, song leading, and even art. He was a mentor to many kids before the convention, and judged almost every event at the convention. He spent the last 8 years in charge of the Bible Bowl program at East Walker Church of Christ, still influencing young people. Having Robert as a grandfather was great for many reasons. He was tough, so he could handle anything. He was smart, so he seemed to have the answer for every question. He was also the most loving person in our lives. He helped me, Kala, write speeches, be prepared for anything thrown my way in debate, and of course memorize Scripture for Bible Bowl. He also helped his second grand- daughter, Hannah, in Bible Bowl and many other events. He helped Micah, his only grandson, learn how to beat time for song leading, memorize verses for Bible Bowl, write speeches, and even with his art submissions. Last, he helped Sydney, the baby, write speeches and to be prepared for Bible Bowl. Now, his grandson Micah is assisting with the Bible Bowl teams at East Walker Church of Christ, because I have no doubt that Bible Bowl was our Grandad’s favorite event. I also believe that he would want us to encourage kids to contin- ue to participate in Bible Bowl, and to continue to grow in God’s Word. I hope this will be another way for our Grandad to influence the kids reading. We all love and miss you very much Grandad.
