NEWS RELEASE Release Time IMMEDIATE Date 17 April 2013 Number 05/13 BHP BILLITON PRODUCTION REPORT FOR THE NINE MONTHS ENDED 31 MARCH 2013 . Full year production guidance is retained for our major businesses following another quarter of robust operating performance. Western Australia Iron Ore achieved record production for the nine month period ended March 2013. Production guidance of 183 million tonnes (100% basis) for the 2013 financial year remains unchanged, despite cyclone related downtime during the period. An annualised production rate approaching 200 million tonnes (100% basis) is anticipated for the June 2013 quarter. Onshore US produced more than five million barrels of liquids during the March 2013 quarter and the Eagle Ford is now our single largest liquids producing field. Petroleum production guidance for the 2013 financial year remains unchanged at approximately 240 million barrels of oil equivalent. Copper in concentrate production at Escondida increased by 61% during the nine month period ended March 2013. Total Escondida copper production remains on track to increase by at least 20% in the 2013 financial year. Queensland Coal production was affected by adverse weather conditions during the March 2013 quarter. However, recently installed flood mitigation infrastructure enabled a rapid recovery in performance and the business was operating at full supply chain capacity at the end of the period. Asi† *School of Mining Engineering, UNSW Australia †BBA Consulting Engineers, Canada Mining in the 21st century is facing many challenges, among which are low-grade and high- tonnage orebodies. One great (r)evolution in mining occurred in the early 20th century when Daniel Jackling proposed the concept of economies of scale for large-scale (bulk) mining at Bingham Canyon. At that time, there were many shallow deposits around the world suitable for open pit mining. Hence, this method grew rapidly and the majority of iron, copper, and gold production came from open pit mines. Open pit mining method has many advantages such as increased safety, higher production rates, more flexibility, lower cost, less operational risk, etc., so normally it considered as preferred option; but break-even depth, high stripping ratios, and environmental issues have become significant challenges facing this method in 21st century. In underground mining, block caving is the only method with the costs comparable to surface mining methods, especially open pit mining. A switch from open pit mining to block caving mining could be another great development in this century. However, even though an increasing number of mines are being developed using block caving, this method involves many technological and environmental challenges. The depth of the orebody is one of the most important factors governing selection of the mining method. -

Longo Golder Paste Technology Ltd., Canada Abstract Musselwhite Mine in Northwestern Ontario, Canada began thickened tailings disposal in May 2010. Surface disposal of thickened tailings for the 4,000 tpd gold mine was chosen following a series of studies beginning in 2002 to investigate options to expand the capacity of the tailings management area. This technology was considered most cost effective in maximising storage capacity within the existing site footprint. The elimination of a pond for closure will reduce the risk of dam failure. Further, the non-segregating tailings are expected to be relatively impervious and saturated. These characteristics will help inhibit tailings oxidation and reduce the likelihood of acid generating and metals leaching in the long term. Musselwhite Mine is currently planning to remove the sulphide minerals from the tailings stream using a flotation plant. This paper discusses the design of the thickened tailings disposal system and presents preliminary observations on tailings deposition to date. In preparation for thickened tailings disposal the tailings management area was partitioned by an internal dyke in 2008. This has allowed tailings to be ‘stacked’ using the upstream method of construction in the west cell and the east cell to serve as a water management pond. The cold climate presents a special challenge to operating the thickened tailings system as there is very little precedent experience.
