LP 2827, 1974 Track 16 from "Airwaves", Elektra 175, 1979 Pressetext: BADFINGER comprised PETE HAM (vocals, guitar), Tom Evans (bass), JOEY MOLLAND (quitar, keyboards) and MIKE GIBBINS (drums). They had two UK top five hits (Come And Get It, No Matter What) and a UK top ten hit (Day After Day). These singles also did well in America, but the early promise was not sustained. Perhaps their biggest legacy to pop music was a song that PETE and TOM wrote, but which was not a hit for BADFINGER, although they recorded the song (and their version is included here). It is, of course, Without You. This haunting ballad became an international number one hit for NILSSON in 1972. It later became a country top ten hit for T. G. SHEPPARD in the eighties and a UK number one hit for MARIAH CAREY in the nineties. Here you get the original recordings of the four songs already mentioned and many other excellent songs recorded for the APPLE label, with a couple of later tracks. Things went badly wrong for the group after they left APPLE, leading to PETE committing suicide in 1975 and TOM following suit in 1983. • Firing the Canon: Multiple Insularities in Jazz Criticism
FIRING THE CANON: MULTIPLE INSULARITIES IN JAZZ CRITICISM By © 2014 Christopher Robinson Submitted to the graduate degree program in American Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. ________________________________ Chairperson, Sherrie Tucker ________________________________ Randal Jelks ________________________________ Tony Bolden ________________________________ John Gennari ________________________________ William J Harris Date Defended: April 7, 2014 The Dissertation Committee for Christopher Robinson certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Firing the Canon: Multiple Insularities in Jazz Criticism ________________________________ Chairperson, Sherrie Tucker Date approved: April 7, 2014 ii ABSTRACT Whereas many jazz scholars focus on jazz criticism's construction and implications of a single, or insular, jazz canon, this dissertation argues that what many jazz critics do is precisely the opposite. These critics disrupt the sense of a singular and insular jazz canon by challenging it through the creation of what I call an insularity, which is a bounded collection of artists and music with a definable tradition, values and established criteria which regulates what is suitable for inclusion. This dissertation argues that jazz does not consist of a single canon and music that exists beyond the canon's boundaries; rather, jazz contains multiple insularities that challenge the canon and vie for the opportunity to overthrow the canon in order to reach canonical status. This dissertation conceptualizes jazz critics as cultural authorities who create or deconstruct insularities through a variety of race, gender and nation projects. It examines the criticism of Leonard Feather, Val Wilmer and Nathaniel Mackey to highlight the numerous ways in which critics engage with multiple insularities.

Apple by the Numbers U.S. album releases From the collection of Andre Gardner of NY, NY SWBO‐101 The Beatles The Beatles Released: 22 Nov. 1968 (nicknamed "The White Album") In stark contrast to the cover to Sgt. Pepper's LHCB, the cover to this two record set was plain white, with writing only on the spine and in the upper right hand corner of the back cover (indicating that the album was in stereo). This was the first Beatles US album release which was not available in mono. The mono mix, available in the UK, Australia, and several other countries, sounds quite different from the stereo mix. The album title was embossed on the front cover. Inserts included a poster and four glossy pictures (one of each Beatle). The pictures were smaller in size than those issued with the UK album. A tissue paper separator was placed between the pictures and the record. Finally, as in every EMI country, the albums were numbered. In the USA, approximately 3,200,000 copies of the album were numbered. These albums were numbered at the different Capitol factories, and there are differences in the precise nature of the stamping used on the covers. Allegedly, twelve copies with east‐coast covers were made that number "A 0000001". As I have always admitted, I am growing up in public and that I have no real long term plan with any of the things that I do, except to seize the opportunities that I can, and basically make it up as I go along, going in whatever direction the Fates send me. Which is basically how I live my life. So this new advancement is allowing me to produce something that is far more like a magazine than it was before.
