  • Gatsby: Myths and Realities of Long Island's North Shore Gold Coast.” the Nassau County Historical Society Journal 52 (1997):16–26
Previously published in The Nassau County Historical Society Journal. Revised and modified in July 2010 for website publication at www.spinzialongislandestates.com Please cite as: Spinzia, Raymond E. and Judith A. Spinzia. “Gatsby: Myths and Realities of Long Island's North Shore Gold Coast.” The Nassau County Historical Society Journal 52 (1997):16–26. Gatsby: Myths and Realities of Long Island’s North Shore Gold Coast by Raymond E. Spinzia and Judith A. Spinzia . The North Shore estates more than those of any other area of the Island captured the imagination of twentieth-century America. They occupied the area from Great Neck east to Centerport and from the Long Island Sound to just south of the present site of the Long Island Expressway. At the height of the estate era, Long Island had three Gold Coasts. An excellent social history of the South Shore estates, entitled Along the Great South Bay: From Oakdale to Babylon, has been written by Harry W. Havemeyer. The East End estates, which were built in the area known as the Hamptons, are chronicled by the authors in the soon-to-be-published Long Island’s Prominent Families in the Town of Southampton: Their Estates and Their Country Homes and Long Island’s Prominent Families in the Town of East Hampton: Their Estates and Their Country Homes. It is Long Island’s North Shore Gold Coast and the fact, fiction, and outright confusion created by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby that are considered here.1 Even the very existence of the South Shore and East End estates has remained relatively unknown.

We look forward to working with you and are de- voted to maintaining the high quality of services that this Village is known for as well as running a fiscally responsible local government. We hope that each and every one of you will come to one of our monthly meetings. Although our Village is small, we make many decisions that influence the lives of our residents; the monthly meeting is an excellent way of staying informed. Knowing that you may not be able to attend all of our meetings we have reinstated the mailing of our quarterly newsletters. We felt that the need for greater communication outweighed the benefits of being “green.” As always, the newsletter will also be posted on the Village website, www.flowerhill.org .

SECTION II Inventory and Analysis 2.1 ORIENTATION AND COMMUNITY PROFILE 2.1.1 GEOGRAPHIC ORIENTATION The Incorporated Village ofLloyd Harbor is located on the north shore ofLong Island, New York, in the extreme northwestern portion of Suffolk County (Figure 2-1). The Village is divided by Lloyd Harbor into two areas, Lloyd Neck to the north ofthe harbor and West Neck (on the mainland) to the south ofthe harbor. The two regions ofthe Village are connected by a narrow isthmus, which carries the West Neck Road causeway and separates Lloyd Harbor from the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Complex. NOTE: in order to avoid confusion, throughout this LWRP the term "Lloyd Harbor" refers to the water body, while the land area is always referred to as "the Village of. " or "the Incorporated Village of. ". The Village is bounded on the north by Long Island Sound, on the south by unincorporated communities in the Town ofHuntington, on the west by the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Complex (which is situated mostly within the Town ofOyster Bay in Nassau County), and on the east by Huntington Bay and the portion ofHuntington Harbor in the Town ofHuntington. The inland boundaries ofthe LWRA enclose approximately 9.3 square miles ofland area. The water-side portion ofthe LWRA comprises Lloyd Harbor, the north westernmost portion of Huntington Harbor (including Lefferts-Van Wyck Mill Tidal Pond), The Sand Hole (in the northwest comer of Lloyd Neck), and small areas along the eastern shore of Cold Spring Harbor. The shoreline ofthe Local Waterfront Revitalization Area (LWRA) measures roughly 22 miles in length (Figure 2-2).

Dr. Roger Gerry 105 Main Street Roslyn, New York Roslyn Landmark Society Annual House Tour Guide. 33rd Annual Tour June 5, 1993 10:00-4:00 Cover Illustration by John Collins—1976. The Van Nostrand-Starkins House The Van Nostrand-Starkins House was built circa 1680 and probably is the earliest surviving house in Nassau County. Originally it was nine feet shorter, from front to back, than it is today and had symetrical roof slopes. It also had an over-hang in its west gable-field. Early in the 18th century the house was extended to the north to its present dimension and the north roof slope was raised. At that time the west over-hang was removed and the present concave south roof projection was added. These changes were accomplished by a Dutch-oriented joiner, probably the same one who built the Robeson-Williams Grist Mill (TG 1976-77). The present 1 V2-storey east wing was added late in the 18th century. The Van Nostrand-Starkins House was restored by the Roslyn Landmark Society and is operated as a house museum. It is open to the public, for which admission is charged, from May through October. 33RD ANNUAL HOUSE TOUR *HOUSES ON TOUR VAN NOSTRAND-STARKINS HOUSE (ca. 1680) 221 Main Street, Roslyn Pages 618 to 634 JACOB KIRBY TENANT HOUSE (ca. 1790) 219 Main Street, Roslyn Pages 636 to 645 WARREN WILKEY HOUSE (ca. 1864) 190 Main Street, Roslyn Pages 646 to 663 JOHN S. • Distribution of Large Glacial Erratic Boulders on the North Shore Of
1 Distribution of Large Glacial Erratic Boulders on the North Shore of Nassau County, New York Herbert C. Mills, Allan J. Lindberg, Lois A. Lindberg Nassau County Division of Museums & Preserves (Ret.) Following in the tradition of M.L.Fuller (1914), the current investigators have recorded the location, size, and rock types of over 1000 large boulders, ranging from 3 feet to 55 feet in length, within a study area in northern Nassau County, NY. The area boundaries include the Long Island Sound shoreline to the north, and the Harbor Hill terminal moraine to the south. The east/west boundaries are the Nassau/Queens border to the west, and the Nassau/Suffolk border to the east. Most of the surface deposits within these boundaries were mapped as ground moraine by Swarzenski, (1963) and Isbister, (1966). The current authors had no preconceived ideas going into this study other than to gather as much information as possible and to see what conclusions might be drawn from the data. The English measurement system was used to make direct comparison with Fuller’s data easier. A 3-foot minimum for the longest dimension was chosen because rocks smaller than that would be too numerous to count and too easily moved from their original location. As boulders increase in size so does the likelihood that they remain at, or very close to, the spot where they were dropped from the ice. Exceptions include, those sliding down the bluffs on eroding shorelines and those excavated during sand mining that have been moved by heavy equipment but still remain in the same general area.
