The performance will take place at Cohoes Musical Theater in Albany, New York. This examination will reveal how the application of Stanislavski’s methods on acting and his views in preparing a character can be used on musical theatre roles to achieve well rounded, fully developed and completely believable characters. The thesis will contain a structural analysis of the script, scene and role analysis, a performance journal to log the growth/challenges of each role, and other vital information charting the application of Stanislavski’s methods on acting. In addition to Stanislavski’s methods other well known acting teachers and their methods such as Richard Boleslavski and Sanford Meisner, will be viewed and applied throughout the process. Furthermore, a performance critique/analysis will be provided by Lani Harris, Tan Huaixiang, and Nicholas Wuehrmann, who serve as the acting committee members for this thesis project. The role of Paul helps propel the action of the play forward allowing the audience to truly realize the themes provided by the playwright, lyricist, and composer. This thesis project will reveal that an actor’s training can be applied in almost any venue of theatre in some form or fashion and successfully make a well-rounded character. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tan and each of my committee members for all of their persistence and enduring patience. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The gay actor and singer Larry Kert originated the lead romantic role of Tony in the landmark 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story. With his expressive, vibrant tenor, he introduced some of the most memorable songs in the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim score, including "Maria," "Tonight," and "Something's Coming." In 1970, Kert triumphed again on Broadway in another Sondheim musical, Company, as Robert, a New York bachelor observing the strains and tensions in the marriages of his best friends, as well as struggling to commit emotionally to each of his three girlfriends. Other Broadway shows involving Kert were unfortunately short-lived, and his later career was devoted mainly to cabaret, television, and regional theater. He was born Frederick Lawrence Kert in Los Angeles, California on December 5, 1930 into a comfortably middle-class family. His father was a jeweler and his mother an actress. He had a brother, Morton, and two sisters, Evelyn and the singer later known as Anita Ellis. He initially attended Hollywood High School but transferred to the Hollywood Professional School in Los Angeles. While still in school, Kert performed as an extra and stunt double in several movies, including Lassie Come Home (1943), where he was a stand-in for the film's star Roddy McDowell. After graduation, Kert took some classes at Los Angeles City College but soon dropped out and moved to New York City where he studied with the celebrated acting teacher Sanford Meisner.

    Biography - Edward Albee Albee was born on March 12, 1928, in Washington, D. C., and adopted at the age of two weeks by Reed and Frances Albee, who named him Edward after Reed’s father. This elder Edward held a substantial business interest in a chain of vaudeville theatres, and the family was very wealthy. Young Edward’s early years were spent among servants, nurses, tutors, as the family alternated between stays in the mansion in Larchmont, New York, and extended winter holidays in Florida. He had, it seems, few friends his own age, but he did own a variety of pets – cats, guinea pigs, a St. Bernard. His parents were, in several ways, a unique couple. His father, Reed, was a small, quiet, apparently unassertive man. Frances Albee, on the other hand, seems to have been loud, aggressive, domineering. She was also twenty-three years younger and a foot taller than her husband. Other of Albee’s biographers usually stress her love of riding and suggest that her usual daytime wear was jodhpurs and a riding crop. Young Edward, who disliked riding, apparently felt more at home with his grandmother (Mrs. Albee’s mother). Albee’s school record was, in the conventional sense, a very bad one. Sent to a boarding school at the age of eleven, he was eventually dismissed from it for cutting classes, ignoring his academic work, not playing compulsory sports, and general bad behaviour. To encourage him toward greater self-discipline, his mother sent him to the Valley Forge Military Academy. Albee’s conduct, however, was apparently a problem that the resources of the academy were not designed to cope with, and he left that school too, at the school’s request.

    135 Chapter 6: Professional Foundations Theory Becomes Practice I moved to New York and started a new life in a very strange city. Chappell Music secured an apartment for me in the London Terrace complex in Chelsea near the Hudson River. It was a monumental architectural structure with an indoor swimming pool, underground garage, and an observation deck on the roof overlooking the river. All of my energy was focused on getting Elizabeth I (Foster & Spangler, 1972) written and up and running off-Broadway by spring. When I was not working on the show, I went to theatre events and performances and tried to network with recent graduates of CMU seeking their fame and fortune in New York City. Elizabeth I (Foster & Spangler, 1972) was scheduled to open off-Broadway at the Sheridan Square Theatre the end of March. However, the production already running in that venue was extended, and suddenly this off-Broadway theatre for which our production was designed was not available. The backers came to a rehearsal and decided the show was so promising that we would take it directly to Broadway where the Lyceum Theatre was available. We opened for previews on March 28, 1972, and the pressure was on. The set and staging as designed for the thrust (three quarter in the round) stage at the intimate Sheridan Square was no longer feasible. How were we to fit that production into a large proscenium situation? We rehearsed long and hard to bring back the intimacy lost in the transfer. I was not responding well to the stress.
