Vorträge 311 About Rudolf Mumenthaler 313 viii Vorwort In diesem E-Book sind alle meine Publikationen – Artikel in Sammelbänden und Zeitschriften sowie Blogbeiträge – zum Thema E-Books und E-Reader zusammengefasst. Die meisten Beiträge sind auf Deutsch erschienen, einige auf Englisch. Sie decken einen Zeitraum von 2009-März 2013 ab und widerspiegeln die Entwicklung in diesen dreieinhalb Jahren: zunächst standen die E-Ink-Reader im Vordergrund, die im Gefolge des Amazon Kindle einen grossen Aufschwung erlebten. 2010 kam das iPad auf den Markt, das dem Konzept der Tablets zum Durchbruch verhalf. Mittlerweile wird das iPad 4 von der Konkurrenz auf der Grundlage des Betriebssystems Android bedrängt. Aber auch bei den E- Books setzte eine rasante Entwicklung ein. In den USA haben sich die E-Books mittlerweile etabliert, und im deutschen Sprachraum steigen sowohl die Zahl der angebotenen Titel wie auch die Umsätze vielversprechend. Ende 2012 sind neue Trends absehbar, so zum Beispiel multimediale, interaktive E- Books, die gerade im Bereich der Kinderliteratur oder bei den digitalen Lehrbüchern eine wichtige Rolle spielen dürften. Die E-Books haben zudem einen grossen Einfluss auf die Geschäftsmodelle von Verlagen, Buchhändlern und Bibliotheken. Für letztere stellt sich die Frage, ob sie noch eine Rolle spielen können, wenn die grossen Marktteilnehmer wie Amazon, Google oder Apple in das Geschäft der Vermietung von E-Books einsteigen oder Buchclub-Modelle mit günstigen Jahresbeiträgen für einen unbeschränkten Zugang zu E-Books anbieten. Gleichzeitig verändert sich auch die Art und Weise, wie wissenschaftliche Werke produziert und publiziert werden. Hier bietet das multimediale, interaktive E-Book im Format EPUB 3 neue Möglichkeiten, die dem Konzept von Open Access neues Leben einhauchen könnten. Die Beiträge sind chronologisch absteigend sortiert: der neueste Beitrag ist also der erste im ersten Kapitel, dann folgen die älteren Artikel. Die gleiche Reihenfolge gilt bei den Blogbeiträgen: die neusten zuerst. Bei den Blogbeiträgen habe ich nur kurze Erwähnungen oder Hinweise auf Blogbeiträge anderer, wie ich sie zu Beginn (vor Twitter) noch öfters gemacht habe, nicht in die Publikation aufgenommen. Eine inhaltliche Redaktion der Texte ist nicht erfolgt, nur aktualitätsbezogene Verweise habe ich entfernt, wenn sie mir aufgefallen sind. Somit können auch die Blogbeiträge im O-Ton gelesen werden. Most of them were published in German, some in English. They cover a period from 2009 to March 2013 and they reflect the development in these three years: at first e-readers with E Ink technology stood in the focus, which faced a boom after the emergence of Amazon’s Kindle in 2007. 2010 the iPad appeared on the market, and it led to the breakthrough of the new concept of tablets. Meanwhile the competitors basing on the OS Android attack the iPad 4 and Microsoft tries to win back some parts of this market with its OS Windows 8, primarily designed for tablets. But also the e-books saw an increasingly dynamic development. Today e-books are established in the US, and in the German speaking market the number of available titles as well as the sales are growing quickly. At the end of 2012 new trends can be seen, for example interactive e- books with multimedia elements, which may play an important role in the sector of children’s literature and digital textbooks. E-books have a great impact on business models and processes of publishers, booksellers and libraries. For the latter the question arise if they still can play a role, when the big players like Amazon, Google or Apple get more into the business of lending e-books or offering them for a low annual fee in book clubs. At the same time the way how academic works are produced and published changes radically. The new format EPUB 3 offers new possibilities, which could give new life to the concept of Open Access. The articles in this e-book are in chronological order: the newest one first, then the older publications. At first appear the articles in journals or in monographs, then follow the posts from two different blogs. From 2009 to April 2012 I published my posts in the blog innovation@ETH- Bibliothek in German (http://blogs.ethz.ch/innovethbib), in May 2012 I started my personal blog in English (http://ruedimumenthaler.ch).

    Ebook Installation

    eBook Installation This document will instruct you on the installation of an eBook reader (Adobe Digital Editions for PC and Mac, and BlueFire Reader for Android and iOS) and adding your eBook to your library. Please note that there are many eBook reader apps beyond Digital Editions and BlueFire. A complete list of compatible apps and devices can be found here. Smartphones and Tablets (iOS and Android) • Install BlueFire reader from either the App Store (iOS) or the Google Play store (Android). Tap the appropriate link to go directly to the download page. • Once the app has installed on your device, tap on the BlueFire icon to open it. • Enter credentials for an existing Adobe ID or create a new one. An Adobe ID is required to read DRM documents. • Return to your e-mail account and click the DRM license link above. • A web page will open with a dialog box asking what you want to do with the file. Tap on "Open in BlueFire Reader." • The file will download and install itself into your BlueFire library. This may take a few minutes. • Once the installation is finished, you will be given an option to "Open Now" or "Open Later". Select whichever you wish. • To access your document in the future, open the BlueFire app. The document is saved in your library and will be immediately accessible. Windows (PC) o Download the Adobe Digital Editions installer by clicking here. o Locate the file you just downloaded (ADE_4.0_Installer.exe) and double-click on it to run the installer. The file should be located in your Downloads folder.

    It is widely seen as a serious problem that European as well as international customers who have bought an ebook from one of the international ebook retailers implicitly subscribe to this retailer as their sole future ebook On the Interoperability supplier, i.e. in effect, they forego buying future ebooks from any other supplier. This is a threat to the qualified European book distribution infrastructure and hence the European book culture, since subscribers to one of these of eBook Formats ebook ecosystems cannot buy future ebooks from privately owned community-located bricks & mortar booksellers engaging in ebook retailing. This view is completely in line with the Digital Agenda of the European Commission calling in Pillar II for “an effective interoperability Prof. Christoph Bläsi between IT products and services to build a truly digital society. The market for e-books has been established during the past several years. Many e-book readers are commercially available, and millions of e-book titles are available for purchase or free download. E-paper technology has matured enough to be used as the screen for dedicated e-book readers which make reading possible with the familiar feel of reading printed books. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the status of the e-book, including the architecture and features of e-book readers, market adoption and e-book industry ecosystem. As texts and images can be stored and retrieved from computers in digital form, the emergence of e-books is only natural. An e-book (electronic book) is a book that is stored in digital form and read on a mobile e-book reader. There are two types of e-book reader: a dedicated e-book reader (such as Amazon’s Kindle, Sony’s PRS Reader), and a multi-function computing device (such as a PC, a tablet computer, a PDA, a smart phone). (Henceforth, we will use the term “e-book reader” to mean either type where a distinction is not necessary.) Figure 1 shows an Amazon Kindle e-book reader.
