PISA Programme for International Student Assessment

Alfred Deakin High School will be participating in the upcoming international PISA testing. Thirty-two (32) randomly selected students (and their parents/guardians) will be notified by email by end of Week 2 regarding the test. What is PISA?  Is a computer-based assessment of how prepared students are for adult life.  Assesses young people’s ability to apply their knowledge and skills to real-life problems and situations.

 Focuses on the skills necessary to cultivate Charlotte Kwong year 10 life-long learning.  Assesses students aged about 15 years.  Involves around about 70 participating countries/economies.  Is run every three years.

What Students will need to do?  Students will need to complete an assessment.  Students will answer some questions in science, mathematics, reading and problem solving, as well as some questions about their experiences at home and school.  Students will also answer some questions about financial literacy.  There is no need to do any special study to prepare for the assessment.

When is this Happening? The assessment will take place during school hours: August 2015  Thursday 13th 9:15am  Friday 14th 12:00pm  Monday 17th 9:15am  Tuesday 18th 12:00pm

What will be done with the results from PISA? PISA data:

EXHIBITIONS

Exhibitions was a lot of fun this year. Half of the year 9s worked on holding a trivia night to fundraise for Beyond Blue. This was a huge success! The parents who came had a great night, the food was amazing and Mr Gannon proved himself to be a very entertaining auctioneer to raise some extra dollars for our very worthy cause. The other half of the year group worked on independent group projects such as sewing pillows for hospital patients, hosting a Soccer world cup for primary students, organising a clothing drive for the needy and a BBQ to raise money for the yellow van, to name just a few. All of the hard work put in by students and their facilitating teachers really paid off. We would like to thank all the local businesses and members of our school community who supported our fundraising efforts for Beyond Blue by donating prizes for our trivia night:

Congratulations to: Noah Aziz-Parker (yr 10) – represented Australia at the United Taekwondo Federation World Titles in London finishing an amazing 3rd place in his age division! The Australian team also came 1st in the medal count with a total of 64 medals with a small team of 18 athletes. Aikido Sessions for year 7 classes in term 2

Our year 7 science class has been lucky enough to have a scientist come in and talk to us. Jeremy My year7 classes enjoyed the experience of Aikido, Morgan is currently studying at the ANU to become the native Japanese martial art, last term. This was a scientist. Over the past few weeks he has talked to tied with Social Emotional Learning and students us about what science is, the scientific method and will discuss issues of bullying and protection of bad science. On Jeremy’s second visit he talked to us about the scientific method and the role it plays in making sure that scientific theories published are accurate. He told us about incorrect theories that are wrong because they had not used the correct scientific method and had later been proven wrong. We also learnt about falsifiable claims and Jeremy’s invisible dragon. After this visit we worked in groups and created a presentation on our choice of a bad scientific theory to present for Jeremy next time he came in. The theories that were chosen were the blank slate, genetically modified foods are bad for you, climate change denial, the moon landing was fake, astrology, homeopathy and the anti-vaccine movement. We all worked really hard on these presentations and enjoyed presenting them to Jeremy Morgan and the class. Unfortunately, this was our last lesson with Jeremy but we hope we get a similar opportunity again.

ADHS VALUES; More than just words

The ADHS school values of Excellence, Responsibility, Community, Respect – were developed by a group of students working with the school vision to develop a set of values that to them epitomised ADHS. This was in 2011 and all the students that initially contributed to the school values have moved on to life post ADHS. Over the next five weeks as a school we are going to revisit our school values and remind ourselves as a community that they are more than just words. It is timely that we remind ourselves of the origin and meaning of the ADHS school values and individually reflect on how the ADHS values inform us and how we demonstrate them in our words and actions.

Tournament of Minds

In the past four years we have had two teams represent ADHS and the ACT at the APFs and three represent ADHS at the ACT Finals. As with previous years, students participated in ToMs after school workshops in term 2 to prepare for the competition. Such was the overwhelming response from our ‘Try Out’ Day, we have six teams representing ADHS across the four subject areas (Social Sciences, Maths Engineering, Applied Technology and Language Literature). As you read this, our challenges are now underway and our teams are working hard to solve them. Teams will be working after school at least two days a week as well as during lunch to complete the task. The students will be presenting their answers at the Southside Finals on Saturday 5th September. Anissa Jones
