Love is all we want ....connect with us with our fan page https://www.facebook.com/IASOURDREAM?ref=stream. ..Hemant ...Hemant Page 37 The Crust of Earth

• It is the outermost and the thinnest layer of the earth’s surface, about 8 to 40 km thick. The crust varies greatly in thickness and composition – as small as 5 km thick in some places beneath the oceans, while under some mountain ranges it extends up to 70 km in depth. • The crust is made up of two layers- an upper lighter layer called the Sial (Silicate + Aluminium) and a lower density layer called Sima (Silicate + Magnesium). • The average density of this layer is 3 gm/cc. The Mantle of Earth • This layer extends up to a depth of 2900 km. • Mantle is made up of 2 parts : Upper Mantle or Asthenosphere (up to about 500 km) and Lower Mantle. Asthenosphere is in a semi-molten plastic state, and it is thought that this enables the lithosphere to move about it. Within the asthenosphere, the velocity of seismic waves is considerably reduced (Called ‘Low Velocity Zone’). • The line of separation between the mantle and the crust is known as Mohoviricic Discontinuity. The Core of Earth • Beyond a depth of 2900 km lies the core of the earth. • The outer core is 2100 km thick and is in molten form due to excessive heat out there. Inner core is 1370 km thick and is in plastic form due to the combined factors of excessive heat and pressure. It is made up of iron and nickel (Nife) and is responsible for earth’s magnetism. This layer has the maximum specific gravity. • The temperatures in the earth’s core lie between 2200°c and 2750°c. • The line of separation between the mantle and the core is called Gutenberg-Wiechert Discontinuity. Note: Temperature Inside the Earth: In the first 100 km, 12° increase per km. In the next 300 km, 2° increase per km. After that it is 1° increase per km. Aswan dam ? on the river nil key difference between a barrage and a dam ? A dam stores surplus flood water and distributes this additional water through the power / irrigation tunnels in the dam or through the canals from its reservoir. In both cases it is the stored water that is distributed, and not river water which continues to flow normally as before. It is at the barrages, for there is neither reservoir nor storage, that the canals take water directly from the rivers. Simply it can be differentiated that Dams add water , but barrages subtract it.

As the tropical cyclones make their way up the warm Gulf Stream, they eventually meet this colder, albeit weaker, Labrador Current, which can really start to slow a large cyclone. Composition of the Atmosphere

The present atmosphere of the Earth is probably not its original atmosphere. The original atmosphere may have been similar to the composition of the solar nebula and close to the present composition of the Gas Giant planets. The earlier atmosphere was lost to space, and replaced by compounds outgassed from the crust or (in some more recent theories) much of the atmosphere may have come instead from the impacts of comets and other planetesimals rich in volatile materials.

Love is all we want ....connect with us with our fan page https://www.facebook.com/IASOURDREAM?ref=stream. ..Hemant ...Hemant Page 73 The oxygen so characteristic of our atmosphere was almost all produced by plants (cyanobacteria or, more colloquially, blue- green algae). Thus, the present composition of the atmosphere is 79% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, and 1% other gases.

Layers of the Atmosphere

The atmosphere of the Earth may be divided into several distinct layers, as the following figure indicates.

The Troposphere

The troposphere is where all weather takes place; it is the region of rising and falling packets of air. The air pressure at the top of the troposphere is only 10% of that at sea level (0.1 atmospheres). There is a thin buffer zone between the troposphere and the next layer called the tropopause.

The Stratosphere and Ozone Layer

Above the troposphere is the stratosphere, where air flow is mostly horizontal. The thin ozone layer in the upper stratosphere has a high concentration of ozone, a particularly reactive form of oxygen. This layer is primarily responsible for absorbing the ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. The formation of this layer is a delicate matter, since only when oxygen is produced in the atmosphere can an ozone layer form and prevent an intense flux of ultraviolet radiation from reaching the surface, where it is quite hazardous to the evolution of life. There is considerable recent concern that manmade flourocarbon compounds may be depleting the ozone layer, Love is all we want ....connect with us with our fan page https://www.facebook.com/IASOURDREAM?ref=stream. ..Hemant 2012 with dire future consequences for life on the Earth.

The Mesosphere and Ionosphere

Above the stratosphere is the mesosphere and above that is the ionosphere (or thermosphere), where many atoms are ionized (have gained or lost electrons so they have a net electrical charge). The ionosphere is very thin, but it is where aurora take place, and is also responsible for absorbing the most energetic photons from the Sun, and for reflecting radio waves, thereby making long-distance radio communication possible. The structure of the ionosphere is strongly influenced by the charged particle wind from the Sun (solar wind), which is in turn governed by the level of Solar activity. One measure of the structure of the ionosphere is the free electron density, which is an indicator of the degree of ionization.

Discuss on the phenomenon of Cambrian explosion ! Most major animal groups appear for the first time in the fossil record some 545 million years ago on the geological time scale in a relatively short period of time known as the Cambrian explosion The theory of the Cambrian Explosion holds that, beginning some 545 million years ago, an explosion of diversity led to the appearance over a relatively short period of 5 million to 10 million years of a huge number of complex, multi-celled organisms. Moreover, this burst of animal forms led to most of the major animal groups we know today, that is, every extant Phylum. It is also postulated that many forms that would rightfully deserve the rank of Phylum both appeared in the Cambrian only to rapidly disappear. Natural selection is generally believed to have favored larger size, and consequently the need for hard skeletons to provide structural support - hence, the Cambrian gave rise to the first shelled animals and animals with exoskeletons (e.g., the trilobites). With the innovation of structural support, the early Cambrian period also saw the start of an explosion in the size of many animals. The Cambrian Explosion is the outcome of changes in environmental factors leading to changes in selective pressures, in turn leading to adaptive diversification on a vast scale. By the start of the Cambrian, the large supercontinent Gondwana, comprising all land on Earth, was breaking up into smaller land masses. This increased the area of continental shelf, produced shallow seas, thereby also expanding the diversity of environmental niches in which animals could specialize and speciate.

The planet Earth is a mixed living and nonliving system. It is the suprasystem of an supranational systems as well as the total ecological system, with all its living and nonliving components. The Earth is studied in this article in terms of a general theory of all concrete systems, with special attention to the important subset of living systems. The Earth is an open system, interacting with its atmosphere and with matter and energy in space. Its systemwide processes and the processes of its various components, as well as their variables and indicators, are discussed. In the light of known facts about the Earth as a system, consideration is given to future worldwide problems which must be dealt with by human planners and statesmen.

When we say that something is a system, we are saying that it has a set of characteristics that are common to all systems and lacking in things that are not systems. A system necessarily has parts (or units, or components); these parts have some common properties, are interdependent, and interact within the system.

The parts of this system are aggregations of matter and energy that differ greatly in size, in other aspects of physical structure, in behavior, and in duration of existence. These parts are observed to interact in exceedingly complex ways. The pervasiveness of the interdependence among all parts of the Earth system is becoming increasingly apparent as the widespread effects of changes in variables are traced. what is jet stream? where the jet stream begins? Air India and Indian Air Lines merging ..explain According to information posted on IA's website, the increasingly intense competition faced by AI and IA from private and global airline companies, was the main reason for the merger of the two airlines.12 In addition to helping AI and IA tackle competition, the merger was expected to result in considerable synergies by integrating routes and streamlining overlapping facilities and infrastructure.

A new company called the National Aviation Company of India Ltd. (NACIL) was incorporated on March 30, 2007 under Sections 391 and 394 of the Indian Companies Act, 1956 to facilitate the merger. Under the terms of the merger, all the undertakings, properties, and liabilities of AI and IA were to be transferred to NACIL.
