    ELIZABETHTURK ELIZABETHTURK THECOLLARS March 9 – April 8, 2006 HIRSCHL & ADLERMODERN 21 East 70th Street New York, New York 10021 212 535-8810 www.HirschlAndAdler.com Continuing a long-standing tradition of exhibiting important American sculpture, Hirschl & Adler Modern is proud to present Elizabeth Turk: The Collars. This instal- lation, featuring sixteen intricately carved marble sculptures, marks not only the PREFACE artist’s first solo exhibition with Hirschl & Adler, but also the first time that this exquisite series of collars will be shown as a complete body of work. Turk’s collars are the culmination of her desire to create a series of “deli- cately monumental” sculptures, a project the California-based artist has been contemplating since her initial experimentation with marble in the mid 1990s. Turk has chosen the collar as her sculptural metaphor, yet this series invites us to explore further, as Turk has, a more complex system of relationships between that which is man-made and that which is natural and organic. Inspired by both her studies of the sciences and by patterns found in nature, and motivated by the paradox of pairing the fragility of lace with marble’s intrinsic strength, Turk has pushed the technical boundaries of this medium. She has deftly transformed solid 400-pound blocks of Sivec and Carrara marble into delicate and ostensibly ephemeral works of art that stimulate us both visually and intellectually. Thanks are due to our guest author who provided the ultimate words to accompany and contextualize Turk’s exquisite oeuvre. And with respect and admi- ration, we thank and congratulate Elizabeth Turk, who has tirelessly honed and expanded this series over the past five years in order to share her unique vision with a wider audience.

Diverging from her signa- ture use of marble, Turk highlights a relevant environmental concern by creating elegant visualizations of the lost voices of birds and mammals in wood, aluminum, 3-D printed ABS filament, and bronze. PREFACE This exhibition features artwork created directly from the sounds of various an- imals that are, today, extinct or endangered. The Macaulay Library at The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, is an extraordinary resource for those wishing to hear the aural legacies of these creatures, or their closest relatives. Several of the birds selected for this body of work went extinct in the 1800s, well before audio recordings were possible. These birds were the collateral damage of human activity, their demise due to the once-fashionable appetite for colorful feathers used to adorn hats and clothing. They are a powerful example of how little it takes to create a silence. In lieu of a checklist of works on view, at the end of this catalogue we have in- cluded a list of the animals selected for the project.
