AGENDA TITLE: Informational Update and Possible Action, Including Direction to Staff Regarding State Park Closures in Mendocino County PREVIOUS BOARD/BOARD COMMITTEE ACTIONS: The Board of Supervisors opposes the closures of state parks and other Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) facilities in Mendocino County. The Board has supported the efforts of Assemblyman Jared Huffman (AB 1589) and Senator Noreen Evans (SB 974 and SB 1078) to maintain state parks facilities in Mendocino County and throughout California. SUMMARY OF REQUEST: Eight of 17 state parks facilities in Mendocino County remain on the closure list. These are: Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, Westport-Union Landing State Beach, Jughandle State Nature Reserve, Point Cabrillo Light Station, Russian Gulch State Park, Greenwood State Beach, Hendy Woods State Park and Manchester State Park. The Hendy Woods Community, Inc. based in Anderson Valley has formed a non-profit corporation and in January submitted a “partnership operating agreement” to the DPR in an effort to keep Hendy Woods open. On March 29, Mendocino Area Parks Association (MAPA) submitted a proposal to operate the campground at Russian Gulch and on April 20 submitted a proposal to operate Standish-Hickey. Several of the key players who are leading these and other efforts to keep our parks open will present informational updates to the Board. They include: Loren Rex, District Superintendent (Mendocino District) for DPR, Carolyne Cathey, executive director of MAPA, Harold Hauck, Point Cabrillo Light Keepers, who is leading the effort on Point Cabrillo Light Station, Kathy Bailey who has spearheaded the Hendy Woods campaign, and Alden Olmsted who has raised funds through the Olmsted Park Foundation and the California State Parks Foundation to delay the closure of Jughandle SNR. The Board will receive the informational update and may consider action based on the presentation.
