Discussion Guide: A Most Beautiful Thing A MOST BEAUTIFUL THING is narrated by the Academy-Award/Grammy-winning artist, Common; executive- produced by NBA Stars Grant Hill and Dwyane Wade along with Grammy-award winning producer 9th Wonder; and directed by award-winning filmmaker (and Olympic rower) Mary Mazzio. The film chronicles the first African American high school rowing team in this country (made up of young men, many of whom were in rival gangs from the West Side of Chicago), all coming together to row in the same boat. An amazing story, based on the memoir of team captain, Arshay Cooper. Take advantage of the teachable moments presented in A Most Beautiful by using these questions to help guide a discussion with your team. 1.) What role did rowing play in helping battle racism for Arshay and the team? If it did not help fight stereotypes and battle racism, why not? 2.) The black rowing team is led by a white coach. Discuss this relationship. 3.) How was rowing used to overcome the gang violence on the west side of Chicago? 4.) At the end of the film, the rowing team films some footage and eventually rows alongside the Chicago Police? What is the impact of this? 5.) How did rowing help these young men overcome the trauma in their lives? 6.) In what ways do you see this movie moving the needle for the sport of rowing at large? How might it encourage diversity in the sport moving forward? a 50 Eggs film In America, a kid drops out of high school every 9 seconds… Imagine if they didn’t. This is the compelling question behind award-winning filmmaker Mary Mazzio‟s newest project Ten9Eight, a thought provoking film which tells the inspirational stories of several inner city teens (of differing race, religion, and ethnicity) from Harlem to Compton and all points in between, as they compete in an annual business plan competition run by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). The film includes students such as: Rodney Walker, age 19, Founder of Forever Life Music and Video Productions. Rodney was put into the foster care system at the age of 5 and ended up homeless on the streets of Chicago. Almost becoming a statistic like many of his brothers, Rodney was able to chart a new future – and is now studying business as a freshman at Morehouse College. Amanda Loyola, age 16, Founder of Eco-Dog Biscuits. Amanda‟s father escaped from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, finding a job at Burger King in Brooklyn, New York. He inspired his daughter, Amanda, to think that anything might be possible in America. Amanda started her business, a vegetarian dog treat company, after her dog, Princess, died from cancer. Rodney and Amanda are but two of several remarkably resilient kids featured in this film, all of whom are facing the most challenging of circumstances in the inner city - making their achievements all the more remarkable. The final competition in New York City convenes 35 young entrepreneurs chosen from over 24,000 students from across the country, winnowed down thru a series of city and statewide business plan competitions held throughout the year.

MARY MAZZIO BIO Mary Mazzio, director of the new documentary film I Am Jane Doe, hails from a highly accomplished and diverse background. Mazzio is a force to be reckoned with whether she’s navigating the Charles River in a rowing shell (she was a 1992 Olympian), negotiating a contract on Boston’s State Street (she is a former partner with the law firm Brown Rudnick) or collaborating with the White House to make a film that helped fund STEM education to the tune of $100 million dollars for under- represented students, as she did with her last film, Underwater Dreams. As a young lawyer, Mazzio represented indigent tenants facing eviction. She noticed a commonality in the issues facing her clients and decided she could be more effective bringing their stories to a wider audience through film. To that end, she left her law practice to pursue her new career as a filmmaker and founded 50 Eggs, Inc., an independent film production company dedicated to creating films with social impact. In all of Mazzio’s films, her mission is to shed light on compelling narratives of social significance, making her one of the country’s prominent filmmakers promoting stories of diversity.
