This week, purely out of curiosity, I looked up Rolling Stones top 100 songwriters of all time. A few spots on the list surprised me a little but let’s see if you agree with their ordering. I’m not going to read all 100, but I’ll hit a few of the names that we are familiar with today. 97 Taylor Swift 95 Bee gees 91 Eminem 84 Kanye 82 Marvin Gaye 76 Loretta Lynn 69 James Taylor 68 Jay Z 60 Willie Nelson 59 Tom Petty 56 Madonna 54 Kurt Cobain 53 Stevie Nicks 50 Billie Joel 48 Elton John 47 Neil Diamond 43 Johnny Cash 40 John Fogerty 39 David Bowie 35 Bono and the Edge 34 Michael Jackson 33 Merle Haggard 31 Dolly Parton (3000 songs, 20 country #1) 29 Buddy Holly 26 James Brown 22 Van Morrison 18 Prince 16 Leonard Cohen 14 Bruce Springsteen 12 Brian Wilson 11 Bob Marley 10 Stevie Wonder 9 Joni Mitchell 8 Paul Simon 7 Carole King and Gerry Goffin (Wrote music for the Beatles, Dianna Ross, Whitney Houston, Gladys Night and the pips) 6 Mick Jagger and Keith Richards 5 Smokey Robinson 4 Chuck Berry 3 John Lennon 2 Paul McCartney 1 Bob Dylan These are the people who write the score that lays behind the scenes of most of our lives. I’m one of those people who gets overwhelmed with nostalgia anytime a song from my early years comes on the radio. My wife on the other hand grew up weirdly sheltered. We have this pattern that we have probably played out 1,000 times in our marriage where an old song will come on and I immediately start to sing along and I’ll look Esther right in her eyes and sing the rest of the line like I’m an 80s rock star and she’s my groupie and the look that she returns to me is so blank that I almost feel the need to introduce myself to make sure she hasn’t forgotten who I am.

  • Rock Music's Crusade of Authenticity
ROCK MUSIC’S CRUSADE OF AUTHENTICITY by DANIEL BROMFIELD A THESIS Presented to the Department of Journalism and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2016 An Abstract of the Thesis of Daniel Bromfield for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the School of Journalism and Communications to be taken June 2016 Title: Rock Music's Crusade Of Authenticity Prof. Thomas Wheeler This thesis attempts to define rock music's standards of authenticity and explore their origins. Included are comparison of rock's standards of authenticity to those of other genres and an exploration of how authenticity has been perceived throughout the history of rock music. This study argues that rock's standards of authenticity are unusual among pop music genres in that they entail artists both writing their own songs and playing their own instruments. This is in contrast to genres like hip hop, contemporary pop, and R&B, which have their own quite different standards of authenticity. Quotes from rock fans, critics, and musicians are used to provide insight into rock's standards of authenticity and how they developed over time. ii Acknowledgements I would like to first and foremost thank my father for introducing me to music. If not for his decision to turn me on to the Beatles one sunny day in June 2006, I would surely be pursuing a far more boring career – and thesis topic. And I would like to thank my mother for giving me a great life and being endlessly supportive.

  • Ruth Frankel Professor Swedberg CAS WS214 May 2, 2013 Carole
Ruth Frankel Professor Swedberg CAS WS214 May 2, 2013 Carole King: A Consequential Female Artist in Achievement and Message Carole King, a Brooklyn born singersongwriter, most associated with the music of the 1960s and 1970s, is significant in that she, according to her biographer James Perone, “almost singlehandedly opened the doors of popular music songwriting to women” (1). She also became the first female artist in American popular music in complete control of her own work. Her writing was prolific. She has written 500 copyrighted songs throughout her career and has had tremendous commercial success (Havranek 236). King’s greatest success was the release of the 1973 album Tapestry, which remained on the charts for 302 weeks (Perone 6). Though her cultural impact is often underappreciated, Carole King has been an important contributor to advancement of women in the music industry and a positive role model to the female audiences of her generation. It is even hard to find academic sources reflecting the success and cultural attributions of King. Overall, it appears that sexism has faded the memory of Carole King’s contribution to women in music. Again and again, King impact has not been recognized or remembered. For example, in the book Go, Girl, Go!: The Women’s Revolution in Music by James Dickerson, King’s name is mentioned only once. Dickerson writes, “Carly Simon and Carole King were the two most successful singersongwriters of the decade, and of the two, it was Carly who was dazzling the world with her toothy smile and sexy album covers” (77).

Innovators: Songwriters David Galenson NBER Working Paper No. 15511 November 2009 JEL No. N00 ABSTRACT Irving Berlin and Cole Porter were two of the great experimental songwriters of the Golden Era. They aimed to create songs that were clear and universal. Their ability to do this improved throughout much of their careers, as their skill in using language to create simple and poignant images improved with experience, and their greatest achievements came in their 40s and 50s. During the 1960s, Bob Dylan and the team of John Lennon and Paul McCartney created a conceptual revolution in popular music. Their goal was to express their own ideas and emotions in novel ways. Their creativity declined with age, as increasing experience produced habits of thought that destroyed their ability to formulate radical new departures from existing practices, so their most innovative contributions appeared early in their careers.

Book by Douglas McGrath Words and Music by Gerry Goffin & Carole King Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil Music by arrangement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing LARGE PRINT BROCHURE 2016 YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL AS YOU FEEL by Ben Fong-Torres Watching Beautiful - The Carole King Musical, and reveling in the remarkable music that she composed, with and without former husband and partner Gerry Goffin, I was reminded of one of the ones that got away. I get asked, now and again, about interviews I wish I’d been able to score at Rolling Stone, but didn’t. Elvis comes to mind. So does Sinatra. And then there’s Carole King. She should’ve been a snap. Unlike The King and the Chairman, Carole was in L.A. and accessible to us; she was one of us. A pop music phenomenon out of the early Sixties; a pioneer singer-songwriter in the ’70s; a resident of good ol’ Laurel Canyon, which produced a good number of the musicians and behind-the-scenesters we chronicled in Rolling Stone: The Byrds, the Doors, the Mamas and the Papas, Crosby Stills & Nash, Frank Zappa, Lou Adler (producer of King’s greatest hit album, Tapestry). You name them; they were there, and they were ours. But King eluded us for years – six, in fact, after the release of Tapestry in 1971. Other artists who generally shied from media met with Rolling Stone. Miles Davis, Van Morrison, Linda Ronstadt, Bob Dylan. Even Janis Joplin, who felt betrayed by what she considered her “hometown paper” – when Rolling Stone was based in San Francisco – with its critical reviews of her work, tracked me down late one night to talk, on the phone, about her latest doings.

  • The Perth Sound in the 1960S—
(This is a combined version of two articles: ‘‘Do You Want To Know A Secret?’: Popular Music in Perth in the Early 1960s’ online in Illumina: An Academic Journal for Performance, Visual Arts, Communication & Interactive Multimedia, 2007, available at: http://illumina.scca.ecu.edu.au/data/tmp/stratton%20j%20%20illumina%20p roof%20final.pdf and ‘Brian Poole and the Tremeloes or the Yardbirds: Comparing Popular Music in Perth and Adelaide in the Early 1960s’ in Perfect Beat: The Pacific Journal for Research into Contemporary Music and Popular Culture, vol 9, no 1, 2008, pp. 60-77). Brian Poole and the Tremeloes or the Yardbirds: Comparing Popular Music in Perth and Adelaide in the Early 1960s In this article I want to think about the differences in the popular music preferred in Perth and Adelaide in the early 1960s—that is, the years before and after the Beatles’ tour of Australia and New Zealand, in June 1964. The Beatles played in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide but not in Perth. In spite of this, the Beatles’ songs were just as popular in Perth as in the other major cities. Through late 1963 and 1964 ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand,’ ‘I Saw Her Standing There,’ ‘Roll Over Beethoven’ and the ‘All My Loving’ EP all reached the number one position in the Perth chart as they did nationally.1 In this article, though, I am not so much interested in the Beatles per se but rather in their indexical signalling of a transformation in popular music tastes.
