In 2011, the regional assets made notable efforts to engage their audiences in many ways, to make the assets and their facilities and programs more convenient and affordable for all. From pre-performance lectures to post-performance talk-backs; from free admissions to artist residencies; from visits to senior centers to musical side-by-sides, from Flickr to Twitter to Facebook, the assets found many ways to broaden and to diversify their audiences, and to give participants the chance to share and to contribute their ideas and opinions. regional assets: ENGAGING the region in 2011 » Highlights by asset category The Allegheny County Regional Parks added a new free ride skills area and trail to North Park, diversifying the trails Parks & experience for everyone. In addition, five new “universal” playgrounds, accessible to all, were added to County / parks. The City of Pittsburgh spent substantial capital funds on paving and road repair to make park visits safe Recreation and smooth. The Audubon Society completed work on its newest feature, DiscoverGround, which will provide children with an opportunity to connect with nature at an early age. The Audubon Society completed work on its newest feature, DiscoverGround, which will provide children with an opportunity to connect with nature at an early age. Approximately 8,720 people contributed their time planting 93 flower gardens in Allegheny County through the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Two members of the Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA) completed and opened new buildings in 2011, providing enhanced library services for the region. ACLA also completed engineering design of a new fiber network for County library sites. The Carnegie LIBRARIES Library of Pittsburgh launched the Libraries in Your Neighborhood, / Community and Schools (LYNCS) program to explore new opportunities to provide library services in non-traditional venues. CLP opened its first “satellite” at the Pittsburgh Public Market in the Strip District last Spring. The eiNetwork replaced 2,200 PCs county-wide. Phipps Conservatory created a number of “green” events REGIonal to encourage its visitors to take strides toward more sustainable facilities / living choices. The National Aviary’s $17.5 million expansion was awarded a Silver LEED certification for green design, including extensive use of bird-friendly fritted glass in its new entrance and lobby. The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium welcomed tiger cubs and introduced its new Amur leopard habitat. More than 6,300 visitors attended the Carnegie Science Center’s Engineer the Future, connecting kids with regional engineers. The American Jewish Museum augmented its Too Shallow for Diving exhibit by organizing workshops for under-served communities to explore water quality and art. Artists Image Resource reached out to six new resident artists. The Children’s Museum opened the new MakeShop, a significant hands-on art and science focused project. The artists at MCG Jazz teamed with the Carnegie Museum of Art to compose and record the original jazz soundtrack ARTS & for the museum’s groundbreaking exhibition Teenie Harris, Photographer: An American Story. CULTURE / The Mattress Factory’s online initiative Friendship 2.0 uses numerous social media platforms to create a vibrant community built by and for fans of its museum. Resident artists at the Pittsburgh Glass Center met with community members to examine the impact of art in the Penn Avenue corridor and then created the exhibit Ten More Years on Penn. The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble produced Music Notes for their concerts that they projected behind the stage. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra made a commitment to offer at least one Explore and Engage activity with every classical concert. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust released a revamped web site with enhanced functionality (like select your own seat).
