POLICE REPORT : We have noticed during our patrols, that there a several vehicles parked on the streets without plates. It is illegal to park an unregistered, uninsured vehicle on a highway (street) The penalty for no isnurance is $400.00 and authority is given in the Motor Vehicle Administ ration Act to have these vehicles towed away at owner's expense. Would those people who have these vehicles parked on the street please remove them to private property so that-we don't have to proceed as noted above. It has also been noted that a lot of people are still not using seatbelts when driving or riding in a vehicle. All persons must use seatbelts in a vehicle. The only exception to this is if you are backing up. The section in the Act that says drivers of delivery vehicles which are doing under -40 k.p.h. don't need to use seatbelts relates ONLY to the type of de liveries where you are proceeding door to door (i.e. milkmen, breadmen, etc.) This does not mean all delivery vehicles (i.e. make one delivery downtown, another several blocks away, etc.) Another very serious situation, which seems to be prevalent in Magrath, is driving with a child in your lap. This is extremely dangerous, and is illegal. The act states that all children under 18 kg (40 lbs) must be in an approved child safety seat when riding-in a ve hicle. Children over 18 kg. (40 lbs) must use seatbelts. Having a child in your lap can im pede your control of the vehicle, and have you ever thought about what happens to that child, if you are in an accident, or have to brake suddenly? The child is the only thing between all your'weight, which will be flung forward, and the steering wheel. Warning tickets have been issued for seatbelts in Magrath for the most part. In future you can expect to receive a fine. It is bicyle season again, and as usual, a great number are being taken. I urge you to contact our office to register your bicycles, if you haven't done so. If you are missing any, please report it as we have several for which we cannot find an owner. With the value of bi cycles today, I can’t believe no one has missed these bicycles. : We are still noticing another conrnon practice in this town which is also illegal. When driving in one direction it is illegal to cross to the opposite side of the street to park (i.e. proceeding north on main street and pulling across to park in front of the stores on the west side). Please make note of your driving habits and correctly park by proceeding to the intersection and making a U-turn to approach the parking spot from the correct angle. Cpl. J.C. Ferguson.
