SUPPORT PROGRAM (SAASP) The Student-Athlete Academic Support Program at the Community College of Rhode Island provides a support system for academic success in college. This mandatory program prepares student-athletes for transfer to four-year institu- tions where they can continue their education and athletic careers. During the first semester of their freshman year, student-athletes are required to complete academic placement tests in reading, writing and mathematics and enroll in a one-credit CCRI student success course. AN OVERVIEW OF CCRI ATHLETICS PAST AND PRESENT The Community College of Rhode Island is home to one of the Ocean State’s finest and most successful intercollegiate athletic programs. Since its inception in 1965, the CCRI program has long been considered a front-runner in New England community college and junior college athletic circles. The basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, cross country, golf and soccer teams have all been nationally ranked. The 2002 women’s soccer team captured the school’s first national championship, while a number of other squads, Vin Cullen Harold “Whitey” Fell including men’s basketball and women’s soccer, were national runners-up. Athletic Director Baseball coach With nearly 5,500 victories, 222 All-Americans, 127 Region XXI championships Men’s basketball coach 1965–1982 and 828 All-Region selections, CCRI leads the way among all New England 1965–2002 community colleges. Great coaching has been the key to CCRI’s success. From the athletic department’s humble beginnings in 1965, the school has always featured legendary coaches. From Hall of Fame athletic director and men’s basketball coach Vin Cullen to baseball coaches Ken Hopkins, Whitey Fell and Art Pontarelli, tennis coach Ray Carr and volleyball coach Gail Davis, the tradition of great coaches and top-flight teaching has extended through the years and continues through the present day. The college holds membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association and is an associate member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. CCRI softball ushered in a new era in 2017 with the hiring of former Rhode OVERALL RECORD: 12-7 Island College standout Kim Warrington as its new head coach. A volunteer assistant 13 years ago under then head coach Bev Wiley, War- rington returned to CCRI in September and led the Lady Knights to a respect- able 12-7 finish in 2017 as runners-up in the Region XV / III / XXI Tournament. The season included several noteworthy victories, among them four wins against Orange County Community College in addition to sweeping the season series against New Hampshire Technical Institute and Massasoit, but the biggest milestone occurred when sophomore tri-captain Courtney Sheridan (War- wick, RI) broke the school’s career strikeout record. Facing Region XXI rival Massasoit on April 19th, Sheridan struck out 18 bat- ters in a doubleheader to break the record set by Devin Azulay, who finished her career with 207. Sheridan appeared in three more games down the stretch and struck out an additional 11 batters to finish her remarkable career with 220. Sheridan also owns the school record for strikeouts in a game (16) and a single season (148), both set during her freshman year. Offensively, CCRI finished 2017 with six players batting above .300 (minimum of 10 plate appearances). Among the starters, Danielle David led the team with a .354 average, including 4 doubles, 18 runs scored and 14 RBI. Maddy Cooper led the Lady Knights with 4 home runs while scoring 13 times and driving in a team-high 26. She also batted .333 with 4 doubles. Leadoff hitter Bella Malvinni also batted .333 in 2017 while scoring 14 runs and finishing first in steals with a team-high 12. FreshmanMirando Sasso added 3 home runs in addition to her .321 average and 15 RBI. Courtney Sheridan ‘17 finished her CCRI career as the school’s all-time leader in career strikeouts, The Lady Knights got off to a slow start, but won eight consecutive games in single-season strikeouts and strikeouts in a game.
